COVER STORY

“Bunny, tomorrow I am going to the ground early in the morning.
Will you join me?”

“Why, Buggy, what are you going to do tomorrow?
Are you going to play with your friends?”

“No, Bunny. Don’t you know that tomorrow is June 21st?
We will celebrate International Yoga Day by performing asanas.”

“Oh, then surely I will also join you.”

Yoga is a physical and mental exercise that disciplines the body
and the mind. Developed centuries ago in our country, yoga
is now practised by people all over the world. People perform
asanas or postures as a part of yoga. The asanas are different
postures of the body. Proper breathing along with the correct
postures has many health benefits. The United Nations General
Assembly declared June 21st as International Yoga Day in 2015.

So will you celebrate Yoga Day with your friends and
family this year?

Yes, even kids like you can also perform yoga! With the help of your

AMAZING ANIMAL

Porcupines are rodent mammals. They are found in
forests, deserts, rocky hillsides of Asia, Southern Europe,

Africa, North and South America.
Porcupines are the third largest rodent species in the

world. They are usually
60-90cms long with a 20-25cm long tail and weigh

around 5-16kgs.

Unique Characteristic: Their coat is made up of sharp

spines or quills that protect it from predators.

June 2018 8

They display defensive behaviour in four main ways - rise of quills, teeth
clattering, emitting odour and finally attacking by release of quills or by

charging sideways or backwards in order to pierce with quills.
They are rounded and slow and are nocturnal creatures, though,

occasionally, they are active during daylight.
They are herbivores. They eat leaves, twigs, clover, barks and fruits and

their natural life span is usually between 25- 27 years.

STORY

Once upon a time, there lived
a crow, a parrot and a mynah
in a tree. The three birds were
good friends. But the crow often
thought in his mind, “My friend,
the parrot, is so beautiful. His
feathers are colourful while my
feathers are black and ugly. And
my friend, mynah, has such a
sweet voice. She sings so sweetly

but if I caw, it is so loud.”

One day as the three friends were flying, a hunter trapped the parrot and the
mynah in his net and took them away. The crow followed the hunter as he took

them to his house and kept them both in separate cages.
The crow said, “Oh my friends, I feel so sad that you are trapped in these cages.”
The parrot said, “You are so lucky, crow. You do not have colourful feathers that

attract people.” “Yes,” the mynah said, “Really you are lucky, my friend.
Because of my sweet voice, I have been trapped by this hunter.”

The crow felt sad on leaving his friends but was happy that he was free.
He never felt bad again for the way he looked or sounded.

STORY

Listen

Tej was a naughty four-year-old
boy. He loved to run around and

would not listen to his mother.
One day, his mother took him to
a park. Once again, Tej ran away
to the other end of the park even
though his mother was shouting,

“Stop, Tej! Don’t run! Wait for
me!” But Tej did not stop.

After sometime, when he got tired, 14
he turned back. But he couldn’t find his
mother. He looked all around but she

was not there. Tej was scared. Where
was his mother? He wanted to cry when
suddenly, his mother came from behind

and caught him.

“Mom! I got so scared when I did
not see you,” he said. “Now, do you
understand how I feel when you run
away and I cannot find you?”, said his
mother. “Yes, Mom. I am sorry. I will

never run away again and will
always be near you.”

moral

Always be near your parents

was first found in Southeast Asia. The betta fish
are brightly coloured and are often seen
swimming alone.

• The betta fish are special because they can take in
oxygen directly from the air and also through
gills. That is why they are able to live for a short
time even outside water.

HEALTH

After playing in the sand
Just look at your hand!

So dirty and brown
That Mummy will frown.

Wash your hands every time
To remove dirt and grime
Because soap and water
Are the germ fighters.

Under your nails or between your fingers

STORY

One day, the rain and the sun
were having a fight. The rain said,
“Everyone loves me more. I make

the air pleasant and cool. I help
plants grow. You are so hot that
people find it hard to go out in
summer.” The sun replied, “You
are wrong. Yes, I may be hot but
without my light, people and plants
cannot live. When you come,

everything becomes wet.
So, everyone loves me more.”
Just then, a cloud was passing by.

Hearing them, it said, “Dear rain 32
and sun, everyone loves you both.
They like it when it rains and they
also like it when it is sunny. But do

you know what they like best?”
“What?” “They like it the best
when you both come together at
the same time.” “Why?” “Don’t
you know why? When you come
together, you bring with you the
most beautiful thing - the rainbow!
That’s why everyone loves you
both.” The rain and the sun were
happy to hear that and never

fought again.

moral

There is beauty in unity.
