JCF COMMUNITY SCHOLARS WELCOME!

At a morning gathering of new, current and past scholars of the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation, Dr Elizabeth Lee
welcomed these scholars from disadvantaged backgrounds to a gathering of minds and to witness the signing of
a Memorandum of Understanding between MyTeksi and Sunway Education Group.
MyTeksi, a taxi despatch service with GPS enhancements founded by former Sunway A-Level alumnus Anthony
Tan, is to contribute a sum of RM6,000 per year for the next 5 years to the JCF. The contribution amounting to
RM30,000 will be used to support the Book Purchase for the community scholars.
This gathering was a welcome platform to encourage the scholars to get to know one another and create
a sharing environment where the senior scholars can share and guide the junior scholars as they make their
educational journey through Sunway University. Having had a total of 41 graduate scholars since 2002, the Jeffrey
Cheah Foundation has served to socially transform this select group of chosen students as they tap into their
potential and aspire to be the next generation of leaders.

AUSMAT students at IMU

KNOWING THE FUTURE NOW

Australian Matriculation pre-university programme, simply known as AUSMAT, preps and guides students with
valuable learning skills that enables them to transition smoothly into the undergraduate or university level entry,
locally and internationally.
In recognising that not all aspire to be surgeons, doctors, lawyers or engineers, but something out of the norm,
Career Exploration Week was organised to create awareness of various career options for those still seeking their
passions, talents and potential.
A platform for students to discover new and interesting career paths, the 3-day journey included talks and
company visits ranging from Communication: Media & Broadcasting, Client Relation and Journalism; to Business:
Real Estate, Marketing and Banking; and Health and Sciences: Clinical Psychology, Dentistry and Pharmacy.
Packing a week’s worth of activities into three whole days, they went through the experience of KNOWING THE
FUTURE NOW.
23 April, 2014 - Day 1
Day 1 saw students signing up for a minimum of 2 talks of their choice. Enabling them to explore options, each talk
was carried out by delightful guest speakers who were passionate about their job and had years of experience
and on the job knowledge.
The talks during the early half of the day were mainly on the sciences starting from 9.00am, whereas the second
half were on industries and corporate that went on till 3.00pm.
24 April, 2014 – Day 2
Day 2 had industry trips that saw 500 students traipsing all over to explore their areas of interest. The highlights
included:
Monash University Malaysia - Medicine
Life as a medical student started early for some of our AUSMATians. They participated in the Anatomy and
Histology class utilising the Smart Table. They also experienced the life of a forensic scientist by working with DNA
and working within four white walls.

Beryl’s Chocolate Factory - Chocolatier

Methods of making one of the most mouth-watering chocolates ever known to mankind was shared with the
students. This was done in the hopes to inspire those who wish to pursue their dreams of being a Chocolatier.

CryoCord

A scientific introduction to cord blood was made to the students and lecturers. They learnt the process of how the
cord blood (empty vessels stored and used to produce another cell) cures diseases and learnt the types of ‘empty
vessels’ present. The visit ended with a tour around the labs.

International Medical University (IMU)

A favourite amongst the students, International Medical University (IMU) had arranged interesting activities for
them. One noticeable hands-on activity was by the Pharmaceutical Department, where students were required to
make their own hand cream lotion. Students were introduced to many of the courses offered, with a special focus
on chiropractic. The day long visit wrapped up with a tour of the university.

Monash University Malaysia - Engineering

Monash University’s Robotics laboratory surprised the students by having the briefing and introduction of the work
done there by none other than a robot. The robot presenter was not a simple robot but a Smart one, worth more
than RM70,000!

A lecturer taught the visiting students about the Control System software after giving a short introduction on
Mechatronic Engineering.

GTI Media

Students were given a glance of being part
of GTI Media culture. The Nerf Gun, X-box
activities as well as group discussions and
presentations were the highlights of the visit.

Coca-Cola At the Coca-Cola factory

A popular Fast Moving Consumer Goods
(FMCG) company with a long history, a walk
down the corridors of Coca Cola was a walk
down memory lane as the walls were filled
with the company’s history showcasing its
beginnings and popular campaigns made
for Coca-Cola.

The visit included a tour of the factory,
presentations and game sessions. The
best part was the free Coca-Cola drinks
provided during lunch.

Manipal University - Engineering At CryoCord

The journey to the university took longer than
the other company visits. However, students
were not disappointed as they were given
the chance of being engineers for the day.
The hours at Manipal were carefully planned
with presentations by undergraduates of the
university on their current projects.

25 April, 2014 – Day 3

The event set up on this day by the Student

Service Department (SSD) proved to be very
entertaining and worthwhile.

Thanks to the guest speaker for the day, Mr. Tiki who turned out to be highly skilled. He managed to get responses

from the students by using unique gestures and tactics in his interaction with the audience. Mr. Tiki shared his
experience on how to dress appropriately for all occasions, such as an interview which requires formal dressing. His
talk included advice on how to leave an impression without being overly dressed.

The three days felt like a week and left the students and lecturers with a sense of accomplishment.

TYCOONS IN THE MAKING

MALAYSIA’S BEST BRING HOME IMO 2014 GOLD AND SILVER

The 10-day International

Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) 2014
held in Cape Town, South Africa had
two A-Level students from Sunway
College bring home two medals,
a gold and a silver. With a score of
29 from Anzo Teh Zhao Yang and a
score of 23 from Khong Yi Kye, these
two were part of a five-member
team from Malaysia that attained
the best ever international ranking
of twenty-three since Malaysia first
participated in 1995.

The first gold was won in 2011 and
Anzo’s medal together with another
from his Malaysian team member
makes it Malaysia’s second and third
gold. One of the oldest, biggest and
most prestigious of all the international
science Olympiads held over 2 days in Cape Town, 560 participants from 101 countries compete “to write solutions
to 3 problems involving complex situations each day in four and half hours,” described Khong.

“The easier question may involve an answer half a page-long while the difficult ones are most likely answers with a
few pages. One of my teammates wrote an 11-page lengthy answer to a question” added Anzo.

In preparing for the IMO, Anzo and Khong were required to undergo a selection process that included tests and
four selection camps. In order to qualify for the six short-listed finalists position to represent Malaysia at Cape Town,
Anzo and Khong competed against 10,000 other Malaysians whilst receiving training from former participants and
our local universities Mathematics lecturers.

Passionate for Mathematics, these two aspiring actuarians have been participating in many different Mathematics
competitions since primary school. In 2013, both of them took part in the Sunway A-Level Math and Logic
Challenge. Khong emerged champion and received a full tuition fee waiver for his current study with a subject
combination of Chemistry, Mathematics, Further Mathematics and Physics. Anzo won an individual prize with
partial tuition fee bursary from the same competition and recently started his A-level programme with a subject
combination of Mathematics, Economics, Further Mathematics and Physics.

Having chosen Sunway College A-Levels, the prizes from Sunway College were one of the key attractions for these
two. In addition, facilities and activities at Sunway College were the other deciding factors for the two of them.

More than just mathematicians, Khong has been an ‘All Star’ A Levels student ambassador since the start of his
intake at Sunway College where he helps organise student events. The multi-talented Anzo possesses a piano
diploma and is eyeing to join the Sunway All Star, the choir and the toastmaster club.

06
An extremely intensive and competitive mathematics
competition, participants were tested on pre-calculus and
other mathematical branches like projective and complex
geometry, functional equations and well-grounded number
theory. Extensive knowledge of theorems was required.

Each question was worth 7 points. At the international
competition, only half of the total contestants were
awarded with medals.
49 gold medals were awarded to participants with scores
of 29 points and above
113 silver were awarded to scorers with 22-28 points
133 bronze medals were presented to scorers with 16-21 points

COVER STORY

A NIGHT TO REMEMBER:
GRADUATING MUFY

In the presence of almost 300 students graduating from the Monash Shibani Veeraragavan receiving the Monash Scholarship
University Foundation Year (MUFY) Class of 2014, valedictorian Valedictorian Mohamad Rafique
Mohamad Rafique said, “As we look around here today at all the
people who have helped make us who we are, it could be your
friends, lecturers, or someone special that you’ve met throughout the
year, I know it feels like we’re saying goodbye but we will all carry
a piece of each other into everything we do next……to remind us
of who we are, and the memories that we share. Having built new
relationships, starting over, MUFY has given me more than just friends.
MUFY has given me a family. Cherish them. Tonight, go to the ones
that mean most to you and thank those who have been very dear to
us all.”

With MUFY celebrating its 15th year in Sunway, Dr. Elizabeth Lee,
Senior Executive Director, Sunway Education Group mentioned MUFY
is the largest and most established provider among all providers
in Australia, China, Malaysia, Indonesia and Sri Lanka. Having
approximately 1,000 students enrolled in the MUFY programme,
Sunway is possibly one of the largest university foundation
programmes in the country. Truly international in its scope of
curriculum and recognition, MUFY’s enrolment has students coming
from over 40 countries including Germany, Egypt, Philippines, USA,
Japan, South Korea, Kazakhstan, Singapore and Indonesia.

ASPIRING TO ENGINEER FOR THE ENVIRONMENT

A Monash University scholar, 17-year old Shibani Veeraragavan, is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Chemical
Engineering in Monash University Malaysia. She aspires to be an environmental engineer so she can help save the
environment.

“This will be my way of giving back to Mother Earth. I hope my degree will give me the necessary skills to be an
extraordinary engineer and researcher who can solve the toughest of challenges. Chemical engineering in
Monash University is a good pathway into my specializing in environmental engineering. Being an environmentalist
has been my dream since fifth grade and I have chosen to do chemical engineering first to broaden my scope.
Chemistry happens to be my favorite subject,” says Shibani.

Once a top Monash University
Foundation Year (MUFY) student,
Shibani misses the stress-free life most
as the programme was conducted
at a comfortable pace, without
too much stress. In MUFY, she had
the joy of interacting and learning
about people from many different
countries and backgrounds. Having
participated in events like MUFY
Sharity and MUFY Games Treasure
Hunt, Shibani and her friends helped
organise activities and raised funds
for a good cause. They learnt that a
little effort could go a long way when
helping those in need and MUFY had
plenty of extra-curricular activities to
keep them engaged.

Having worked hard to achieve
her goal to be top student in MUFY,
Shibani from the MUFY July 2013
intake is immensely happy to have
had the chance to make her parents
and her teachers proud. With the
amazing experience of having been
a top student, Shibani intends to
pursue her masters in Australia. In
her own words,”Studying at Sunway
was a unique experience, one that
I enjoyed. I wanted to join Monash
University, and Sunway College was
the only provider of MUFY here in
Malaysia.”

A hobbyist who loves art and crafts,
reading and playing music, with an
interest in yoga, Shibani has been
studying classical Indian dance
(bharatnatyam) for the past 7 years.
Introduced to Carnatic music by her
grandmother, Shibani has been a
student of this for the past 4 years. She
is also learning to play classical Indian
instruments, the veena and the tabla.

MOVING ONWARD!

Graduating in December 2014, 21-year
old Alyssa Wong is studying Occupational
Therapy (OT) at the University of
Queensland. Here is what she has to say
about occupational therapy as a career
choice….

Occupational Therapy, a mixture of science
and art, is one of the ‘Allied Healths’-
Physiotherapy, Audiology, and Speech
Pathology.

Occupation is an activity that occupies
your time. As human beings, we fill every
waking moment with action and activity
- cooking, cleaning, bathing, eating,
drinking, socialising, showering, internet
surfing, paying taxes, and so on. These
activities define us, so imagine the grief that
someone would feel if they lost the ability to
do these things independently. As a result
of age, disability, developmental disorders,
mental illness or poverty, an occupational
therapist helps these people overcome
obstacles that prevent them from living a
purpose filled and meaningful life. Here are
three ways an OT can do this:

Changing the nature of an activity
Changing the environment in which
the activity is conducted
Improving a person’s individual skills
and addressing the disability that
prevents them from achieving their
goals

An OT can advocate for their clients by going to different charities, organisations and trying to illicit financial and
social assistance.

OT offers me variety and it is real life hands-on application.

Each day is unique – the elderly, the young, parents and all kinds of people come with a variety of problems
with differing personalities, and different therapy goals. Constantly learning, being exposed to new and exciting
things, an OT can offer a variety of treatments. This includes visiting people in their homes and assessing the level
of safety, a home can be modified to help people live and function independently, talking to real people about
issues that mean a lot to them, rather than sitting behind a desk all day. OTs can prescribe equipments for use such
as wheelchairs, walking sticks and even bathroom railings to those in need.

It is inspiring to think the purpose of my life is to help others find meaning in theirs.

Although a rapidly growing field, OT is still relatively unknown. It may not offer the prestige or high pay that most
pre-university students look for in potential careers though I have been informed that one is guaranteed to find
work, especially if one is not too picky about which area or country one lives in.

How did AUSMAT help me to prep for my future?

It facilitated a healthy social environment where I learned to build relationships with students and teachers.
Developing conversational skills was an important part in my journey to becoming an OT. The importance of time
management and good organisational skills helped me meet assignment deadlines!

SUNWAY STUDENT AMBASSADORS LEARN TO WORK AS A TEAM

“The teambuilding was so much fun and I want to do it again! The games taught me a lot about teamwork
especially through the beach activities”, says Ong Jo Lyn of the Sunway College A-Level programme. Jo Lyn was
one of 52 Sunway Student Ambassadors from various pre-university programmes at Sunway College selected for a
day out at Sunway Lagoon. The special outing where the students were engaged in teambuilding exercises and
games was held in appreciation of their outstanding achievement through active involvement as volunteers in
events by the Sunway Marketing Department and as Sunway’s brand ambassadors.
The day started off with an ice-breaking session after which the students were divided into 5 teams. The teams
were then assigned different tasks and exercises to complete and earn points.
The team with the highest points – Team Two,
was champion. Through the assigned tasks and
games such as Tube Filling, Bomb Removal, Zen
Master and a Treasure Hunt, the Sunway Student
Ambassadors learned to work together as a team.
The aim of the fun day out was to further enhance
the students learning experience by encouraging
them to exercise and learn the importance of time
management, team work and leadership skills.
Students had the opportunity to make new friends
and for the shy ones, part of the day’s activities
was an initiative to draw them out from their shells.
“It was an exciting day with lots of fun and
interesting activities. I would love to go through
it again!” says Iskandar Azani of the Canadian
International Matriculation Programme (CIMP) at
Sunway College.
