from us to you
Hello New Duncaroos!
It may not be the first time you hear it, and it certainly won’t be the last, but
we’re incredibly excited to say…
Welcome to Rice, welcome to Duncan, and welcome home! We are your Ori-
entation Week (O-Week) Coordinators: Anthony Insalaco, Mary-Gwen Milburn,
and Pia Arana (AMP). Our goal as coordinators is to give you the best transition
possible as you enter Rice University and the Duncan College family. We want
nothing more than for you to feel connected, supported, and empowered as you
enter this next chapter in your life. Since last December, we have had the honor
of curating Duncan EspressO-Week 2022 and we can’t wait to bring all of our
goals, visions, and values to life.
As New Students, we each felt a mix of excited, nervous, hopeful, and
everything in between as move-in drew closer. We understand that you may
have a lot of questions and some big feelings about coming to Rice and we kept
this in mind when making this book. The following pages will introduce you to
Duncan and give you an overview of what your new home will look like. When
you move into Duncan on August 14th, we hope that O-Week will help you learn
more about the resources and opportunities Rice has to offer, find belonging in
a community you can feel at home in, build a strong foundation of support and
knowledge for your unique Rice experience, and make connections so you know
that, at Duncan, you never have to go through any challenges alone.
Whether it’s us, your advisors, the Dunc-Squad,
or your affiliates, everyone you will meet has
had a different O-Week experience and now
brings their own flavor to Duncan. Similarly,
each one of you brings unique personalities,
passions, and perspectives. As your first year
at Rice gets brewing, we hope that each of
you will make the most of everything Espres-
sO-Week has to offer and we are so excited to
meet you!
Dunc-Love,
Anthony, Mary-Gwen, and Pia (AMP)

MISSION
STATEMENT
Throughout EspressO-Week…
Just as cafés provide a friendly space to connect,
learn, and r echarge, we look to welcome our New
Students into a similar environment of inclusive-
ness, empowerment, and support -- a place where
anyone is welcome to pull up a chair.
In the Duncan community, we welcome people
from all walks of life, and with such diversity
comes a wonderful mix of perspectives and pas-
sions. We will encourage all New Students to dis-
cover how their favorite recipe may evolve and
blossom, and see how all the unique flavors they
bring contribute to the Rice Blend.
Before they get brewing, we will give New Stu-
dents the essential boost they need to succeed at
Rice by familiarizing them with our menu of vari-
ous opportunities and support networks.
While we will enable Duncaroos to get a taste of
every flavor Rice has to offer, we understand that
the perfect brew isn’t all about the grind. We will
make sure to leave room for the key ingredients of
emotional, physical, and mental wellbeing.
Ultimately, our goal for EspressO-Week is for New
Students to feel accepted, prepared, and confi-
dent as they enter their new home, no matter what
they’d like to order.

what to bring
~Keep in mind that you are not required to bring any of these items, nor is
this everything that you might need. Here is a list to give you an idea of what
current Duncaroos have in their rooms, so that you can consider what you
might want to bring for your room.
Clothing
Houston weather is generally hot and humid most of the year, with a colder
spell in winter months, so bring clothes for both kinds of weather. Be prepared
for heavy rains— rain boots and jackets are a good idea, and always keep an
umbrella in your bag. Outside of your normal wardrobe, you may want to bring
some additional pieces. Keep in mind that there will be some occasions to
wear nicer clothes. Rice has access to a pool, and the DuncTank is swimmable
(if you try hard enough), so bring a bathing suit if you would like to partake
in that. There may even be some themed events, so don’t think twice about
bringing a plain white t-shirt or your cowboy hat.
Laptop Computers & Printers
There are computers and printers available all over campus (and in Duncan), so
you don’t need your own. However, it can be extremely useful and convenient
to have a laptop, and most people do choose to bring their own. We want
to emphasize that having your own device should in no way place a financial
burden on you or your family. The university has and will continue to make
accommodations and support protocols for individuals needing devices. Look
out for university messages about this, reach out to Rice OIT, or contact us
with any questions or concerns regarding having a computer. Each room in
Duncan has wired high speed internet access (1 port per person), and almost
all of campus is equipped for wireless internet access, but let’s just say some
places are better than others.

DUNCAN VALUES
This first year of Duncan also inspired the phrase
“Somos Equipos, Somos Familia” (Spanish for “We
are a team, we are a family”), the official Duncan mot-
to. In Duncan’s first Beer Bike race, one of our bikers
crashed on the track. The Duncaroos watching immediately
forgot about the race and rallied to help the fallen biker. Af-
ter the race, Luis, our first College Magister, sent an email to
the college lauding the positive community attributes shown
that day, ending the email with “Somos equipo, somos fa-
milia,” and inspiring its use within Duncan for years to come.
The Latin rendering of Luis’ words (“Classis et Germanitas”)
is currently immortalized on the Duncan College Crest. In the
last several years, our college has adapted to and overcome
unprecedented challenges. Throughout a global pandemic
and extreme political turmoil, Duncaroos have come togeth-
er and supported each other. Our community has grown
to embody the spirit of “DuncLove”, a sense of family and
connection that binds us all together. DuncLove is holding
the commons door open for someone behind you. DuncLove
is staying late at Fondren Library helping your friend prepare
for a midterm. DuncLove is talking to someone standing
alone at a FITQ. DuncLove is truly everywhere in our college.
With every class of Duncaroos, new traditions arise, old
traditions become immortalized, and our community grows.
Some of the most important milestones of our college are
noted in the following pages describing Duncan’s traditions
and events. However, as a relatively young college, our
culture and history is still malleable. Each new class of
Duncaroos, including yours, actively contributes to
this history. We expect that you will share in Dun-
can’s existing values and culture and carry the
Duncan community into the future by
making your own impact.

FOUNDING HISTORY
As part of Rice’s “Vision for the Sec-
ond Century,” the student body of the
university was set to increase 30%. Consequently,
more housing was needed. In 2007, Charles William
Duncan Jr., and his wife, Anne Smith Duncan, had just
celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary and, as part of
their ongoing support of Rice, donated $30 million to establish
Duncan College, Rice’s eleventh residential college. The Dun-
cans have offered their support to Rice in many ways, from Mr.
Duncan serving as chairman of the Rice Board of Governors (now
known as the Board of Trustees) to Mrs. Duncan actively support-
ing the Shepherd School of Music. The Duncans have a passion
for environmental sustainability (partially stemming from Mr.
Duncan’s position as Secretary of Energy under President Jimmy
Carter), which was the motivation behind designing Duncan as
Rice’s “green” college. As such, Duncan is one of the first build-
ings in Houston to receive LEED (Leadership in Energy and Envi-
ronmental Design) Gold certification. Duncan College opened its
doors in 2009 to its first matriculating class of 79 students. As 79
students is not enough to fill all 324 beds available at the college,
for the 2009-2010 school year, many Bakerites lived at Duncan
while Baker College was being renovated. The two colleges were
collectively referred to as “BaDunc,” and Baker and Duncan have
been sister colleges ever since. The large class of Bakerites, along
with a series of campus ambassadors from other colleges, provid-
ed the initial direction and infrastructure for our young college.
In the following year, Duncan became independent of Baker but
welcomed transferring juniors and seniors from other residential
colleges, along with a new class of incoming students. The official
Duncan dedication took place on November 19, 2010 in the Dun-
can quad. Anne and Charles Duncan, President Leebron, Dean
of Undergraduates John Hutchinson, Duncan Magisters Luis
Duno-Gottberg and Marnie Hylton, and Duncan President
Amber Makhani gave speeches about how far Duncan
had come, what it would soon do, and what this
meant for the university. November 19th is now
regarded as Duncan’s birthday, “Duncan
Day,” and the week leading up to
it “Duncan Week.”

MAGISTERS
The Latin phrase for “teacher” or “master,” the Magisters include a tenured professor
and their family, who serve as a liaison between Duncan and other departments
around Rice. They promote a variety of cultural and intellectual interests among
students and provide emotional and social support. They live with their family in a
house adjacent to each residential college.
RESTIDENT FACULTY ASSOCIATES
Duncan is one of the few colleges that have RFAs in addiion to RAs. They live on the
first floor of Duncan in the RFA apartment, in the northeast corner of the quad. Our
RFAs take on a job more focused towards supporting your transition to college,
both in terms of academic preparation and in terms of social and personal growth.
RESIDENT ASSOCIATES
The RAs are faculty and staff who live on the 2nd and 3rd floor in their own
apartments. They are not here to make sure you go to bed on time or do all your
homework; however, they are a confidential and easy-to-access resource when
you need support living at Duncan. Our lovely RA’s are known for hosting study

ANTHONY INSALACO | HE/HIM | 2024 | NEURO, CAAM | SCOTTSDALE, AZ
“Ten percent pure Arizona heat, twenty percent chai-guy, fifteen per-
cent concentrated power of Beer Bike, five percent Pre-Med, fifty per-
cent wholesome-sports-bro and a hundred percent reason for you to
be AMPED that Anthony Insalaco is one of your O-Week Coordinators!
During his down-time, Anthony enjoys cruising at light-speed on his bike,
going for long runs on the outer loop, playing basketball and tennis with
his friends, making you think he’s super focused on work when he’s really
watching a Phoenix Suns game, tolerating being called “Tony,” and being
the second favorite child (bested only by his Great Dane, Boru). As he’s
somehow managing being a Sophomore Class Representative, two-time
Beer Bike Coordinator, EspressO-Week Coordinator, research-intern/
mouse-whisperer at TMC, and local chronically-early college student,
we’re starting to wonder how it’s possible for Anthony to have only been
in one place at a time this past year. Although we may never know if
Anthony truly has secret superpowers or not, we can say with absolute
certainty that he truly cares about Duncan and all of the people in his life.
With his grounding presence, stellar listening skills, uplifting words of
gratitude, and dedication to whatever he puts his mind to, it’s no wonder
that so many consider Anthony to be a positive force in their lives and we
are beyond grateful to be coordinating with him.” --Mary-Gwen and Pia
MARY-GWEN MILBURN | SHE/HER | 2024 | ECON, SOPA, DSCI | CARSON CITY, NV
“EspressO-Week is in good hands with this Notion navigator, graphic de-
sign icon, and proud herbivore! Within the first 5 minutes of meeting you
(or even just reading your New Student forms), she will probably have
already deduced your enneagram type (she’s a type 9w8). If you want to
make her day, ask her about it and she’ll happily give you a very thorough
explanation, and, because she is a Canva QUEEN with unmatched overall
organizational skills, you know her presentation would be fire. When she
isn’t busy being a stellar coord or mailroom fairy, you can find her reading
and writing poetry, collecting crystals, curating thoughtful playlists for
others, using too many words, giving tarot readings, and hosting cozy
movie nights. This avid hiker, big Tahoe girlie, and ex-barista is always
seeking creative outlets to put her artistry to good use: her most recent
undertakings include learning how to crochet, re-learning photoshop,
taking candid photos of her friends (always at the best-worst times), and
doodling cute messages on the packages she sorts. All in all, Mary-Gw-
en is a wonderful friend who will always have your back with an extra
blanket and warm drink in hand; you can absolutely come to her with
anything. It won’t take long for you to discover how bright her big heart
shines and how much she cares. Oh and ask her about her cat reaction
image collection - you won’t regret it!” -- Pia and Anthony

PIA ARANA | SHE/HER | 2024 | SPORTS MED, PSYCH | HOUSTON, TX
“Taking after the espresso shot itself, Pia Arana is the embodiment
of concentrated energy -- watch as she zooms across the Duncan
quad on her scooter to Rice Owls Dance Team practice or speeds
past other racers as Captain of Duncan’s Beer Bike team, and you’ll
quickly realize she is always on the go! Despite her busy schedule,
one thing that Pia always has time to showcase is her impeccable
style: this Costa-Rican-Puerto-Rican-Nicaraguan O-Week Coordina-
tor’s elite fashion sense keeps her prepared for any occasion, wheth-
er it’s teaching her less coordinated friends the intricacies of yoga as
a certified instructor, overcoming the height barrier to dominate in
volleyball and basketball, or hosting some of Duncan’s most creative
social events as a resident of 4B. In all that she does, Pia’s seemingly
endless supply of positivity, remarkable open-mindedness, and clear
dedication towards improving Duncan shines through, making her
not just a great EspressO-Week Coordinator, but also friend. We are
confident that in no time, you will come to cherish her spontaneity,
artistic vision, and easygoing attitude just as much as we do. After
working with her these past months, we know that, with Pia as your
Coord, there’s no limit to how exciting EspressO-Week will be!”

Peer Academic Advisors (PAAs)
PAAs are Duncan students extensively trained by the Office of Academic Advising (OAA) to serve their respec-
tive residential college community. They provide peer advice to fellow students about a wide range of academ-
ically-related topics. Using their personal experience as Rice students, they can offer accurate advice regarding
specific courses, co-curricular opportunities, academic rules and procedures, and a wide range of other topics.
They also lead the O-Week Academic Planning Sessions and can’t wait to answer any questions you might have!
JAKE LEHRMAN | 2025 | BIOE, DATA SCI | SCARSDALE, NY | DUNCAN
Jake Lehrman (aka Jeckle) is one of the most energetic and chaotic people you’ll meet at Duncan!
Whether he’s listening to Taylor Swift on the Martel swings, grabbing a matcha latte at Coffee-
house, or jamming to Color by Number near the Dunc Tank, he’s always around campus and down
to talk to anyone. Jake is also notorious for being undecided on his major. Currently he is looking
to study Biological Engineering, but has considered almost any STEM major out there, making him
an amazing resource to talk to if you have any doubts or questions about your major! Besides his
addiction to “poppin” pink lemonade and occasional procrastination ventures, Jake is adventur-
ous, kind, and always here for a good laugh. He has an incredible amount of enthusiasm, is great
at making schoolwork fun, and we know he will be an amazing PAA for y’all! – Sanya Arora, Wren

RHEA CHO | 2024 | COG SCI, SPANISH | MERRIT ISLAND, FL | DUNCAN
This junior majoring in Cognitive Sciences with a certificate in Spanish is a veteran PAA ready
to assist you with all academic and scheduling-related quandaries during EspressO-Week! Rhea
debated among 3 majors and created multiple four-year plans before settling on Cog Sci, so she
knows exactly what it’s like to be indecisive and is ready to help. A native Californian/Floridian,
Rhea has lived in San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Merritt Island! In her free time, she enjoys explor-
ing new cafes, going on outer loop and Moge Tee runs, browsing Pinterest for apartment decor,
and thrifting. On campus, you can find her at Chaüs with a matcha latte or in Duncan Commons.
The best decision she’s made at Rice so far is studying abroad in Madrid, Spain for six weeks! As a
PAA, Rhea will strive to help you make the most informed decisions aligned with your academic
and career goals.
TAYLOR STOWERS | 2025 | PSYCH, SOCI | PEARLAND, TX | DUNCAN
Who gives the best hugs and has the most incredible book collection you’ve ever seen? It’s none other
than sophomore PAA, Taylor Stowers! When she’s not hitting high notes as a member of the Rice Philhar-
monics, Taylor is dancing (she once opened for the Rockettes!), acting with fellow Rice Players, and playing
the piano. She will happily babble to you about musical theater, challenge you to Harry Potter, MCU, or
Avatar: The Last Airbender trivia, give unsolicited book recommendations, and, as an aspiring therapist,
encourage you to come to her with all your vents or shoulder-to-lean-on needs. Love her already and want
to follow her socials? That’s too bad, as her only form of social media is Pinterest. This warm, caring, ball of
sunshine human being is one of the most amazing people you’ll meet, and she can’t wait to meet all of you
incoming Duncaroos! – Audrey Ma (Wiess ‘24)
AIMEE MANIKANDAN | 2023 | LING, PSYCH, CLAS, SPAN | MEMPHIS, TN
A Linguistics and Psychology double major, Aimee Manikandan is one of the sweetest people
you’ll meet. When she’s not traveling or learning a new language, you can find her talking
about how good the water is in her hometown of Memphis, Tennessee or watching standup
comedy. Aimee loves the color lavender and hates slow walkers (but who doesn’t?). Get ready

Although at first, you might be intimidated by this 6’1 stud in his all-black EMS uniform, you’ll soon
realize that Aubrey is a super down-to-earth guy who will be a great resource and friend. Hailing
from Katy, Texas, this biosciences & sports medicine double major can do it all. Around campus,
Aubrey conducts microbiology research, treats students for squirrel attacks with Rice EMS, and
helps fellow Duncaroos decide which classes to register for each semester as a PAA. A scholar and
baller, Aubrey can frequently be found lifting at the Rec Center, running laps around the outer
loop, or performing with the Campanile Orchestra. If there’s something you ever need help with,
there’s a good chance Aubrey knows what to do. When you meet him in August, make sure to ask

DHRUV PATEL | 2025 | NEURO, MEDICAL HUMANITIES | ORLANDO, FL | DUNCAN
We are proud to present Duncan’s disputed Florida Man, self-proclaimed second-best billiards
player, and ghostwriter of the most legendary speeches. Dhruv speaks like a bartender, dresses
like a bouncer, and drives like a valet, producing the best “no thoughts, just vibes” you will encoun-
ter. This Orlando-flavored gentleman can be seen watching UFC at the most elite of institutions,
Buffalo Wild Wings. He is also hard at work on the pre-med track: surgeon or bust. Beyond aca-
demics, Dhruv could be found trying to maintain a consistent bedtime of 10 PM, at least before his
evenings became filled as Captain for the Billiards Team and Beer Bike Pit Crew. He is a staple at
O-Week gatherings and always down to strike up a conversation, telling many questionably true
stories that never get old. Dhruv is a decent person and friend, unapologetically goofy but also
deceptively successful, and many more things in-between!

Ever found yourself in deep, conflicted thought about the meaning of 17th century poet John

sweetest people you will ever meet. Her infectious smile and warm hugs are sure to help you
out of any crisis. So, get ready for the best O-Week Advisor who will make you a Mitski fan, put

Did you hear that? The faint sound of a fire indie playlist featuring Phoebe Bridgers and Conan

a Lil Nas X listening party in a Fondy study room or practicing her SNL audition on unsuspect-
ing bystanders, this Aries can be found cooking delicious meals in her off-campus apartment.
Chock-full of laughs and stories from her small town Texarkana roots, Molly is full of surprises.
You might catch this self-proclaimed Bug Girl sneaking a snail somewhere it definitely shouldn’t
be. Ask her about her semi-famous middle school Hunger Games fan page. (Caution: you might
get roped into a movie marathon to rewatch the series!) A veteran Starbucks barista, Molly can
make you an exquisite vanilla oat milk latte — as long as you promise not to throw a straw at

Adam Spieles will surely tell you about his pursuits as a Computational & Applied Math and

he has a way of knowing exactly how to get back home. This makes sense given how passionate
Adam is about the people and places he loves. Though he often cracks outlandish jokes, Adam
is always willing to offer a shoulder and a tight hug whenever you’ll need it. The only time he
might say no is when there’s a Cavs basketball game to watch or if it’s 7 PM CDT on a Sunday

MARIA BUSTILLO | 2023 | ELEC | MIAMI, FL | DUNCAN
Hailing from the sunny town of Miami, Maria is one of the best and brightest Advisors and
SHElecs (woman electrical engineer!) you could have asked for! Despite being off-campus for
two years, she can be seen everywhere around Duncan, serving as a Culture & Arts committee
head and next year’s Beer Bike coordinator. A product of her hometown Medellin, this Colom-
bian queen manifests her roots and humble beginnings from her daily outfits to music taste to
conversing in Spanish whenever possible. As social events chair for HACER, she loves teaching
others about Colombian culture. In her free time, she loves bowling, playing Ms. Pacman, and
serving as the unofficial Duncan Jester. Maria also has the musical talent of an *angel*; any time
she breaks out in song, you’ll be blessed with her magical voice. More impressive, though, is her
voice-over work; ask to hear her Mickey Mouse or Shakira impressions: she’ll do it for the low
price of one jar of jellybeans. Most importantly, however, Maria will always have your back! She
is one of the most trustworthy, cheerful, and supportive people we know.

SANYA ARORA | 2025 | ASTROPHYSICS, DATA SCI | NEW YORK, NY | DUNCAN
Sanya Arora (aka Santa Aroro according to spell check) is one of the busiest and most energet-

Head, an Astrophysics major, and a great friend to so many people around Duncan and Rice.
She’s completely incompetent at directions (please don’t follow her anywhere; this girl could
not find her way out of an empty room), she starts dancing at completely random times for no
reason, and she talks super loudly (but only because she’s always excited about something or
another). She is a hardcore floor person: she will sit on the floor no matter where she is. You
can find her in Duncan Commons (sitting on the floor), a Duncan study room (also sitting on the
floor), or in the den she built for herself under her bed (yup, you guessed it, on the floor). But
most of all, she is a loyal companion who values her friends and family over everything else in

literal child, which makes him a great provider of snacks. Give him fruity snacks and appley juice
and he’s happy. However, his biggest obsession is television (but not movies. gross.). I triple dog
dare you to ask Tyler about the Leftovers on HBO. All in all, Tyler’s biggest passion is spreading
the word about things he loves and spending quality time with those he cares about :)

EVAN JASICA | 2024 | ECON, ENVIRONMENTAL SCI | LAKE FOREST, IL | DUNCAN
Wait. Y’all hear that? That deep, soothing voice echoing across the quad? Well, that’s not Darth
Vader or The Rock. That, my friends, is the one and only Evan Jasica. This junior from the suburbs
of Chicago is far more than he may seem – a true jack of all trades, a man of all work. Lost in the
wilderness and need a knot tied or a fire started? Well you’re in luck cause Evan is a fully certified
eagle scout. In a fight and need backup?? Look no further, cause the man is a Duncan junior class
boxing legend. Interested in the intersections of climate change, economics, energy transitions,
and public policy??? You’re still in luck cause my boy here is an Economics major and an Envi-
ronmental Studies minor studying and researching exactly that. But beyond his many talents,
Evan is a genuinely good friend – you can often find him building beer die tables for Duncan or
making delicious Polish donuts for everyone to enjoy. With Evan as your Advisor, you’ll be sure
to feel right at home here at Rice.
– Shalin Mehta, Duncan ‘24
HAWA DIALLO | 2025 | HEALTH | NEW YORK, NY | WIESS
Did you make a trip to Chipotle just to find out that they ran out of all the ingredients? You can
blame Hawa. With 10 empty Chipotle bowls in her trashcan and a box of snacks she won’t finish
under her bed, Hawa is an enigma. Hailing from the Big Apple, she’s an indecisive, cranberry juice-lov-
ing, snow cone-slurping phenom! This sophomore Health Sciences major is funny, thoughtful, and
always willing to give you company whenever you need it. Don’t ask her to drive you anywhere
though, like a true New Yorker she doesn’t have her license and also can’t make a left turn. Hawa
is one of the wittiest people you’ll encounter and will have you laughing no matter the situation. If
you ever need to vent or someone to walk you home, she’s your girl! Hawa’s only shortcoming is the
fact that she can’t see without her glasses and probably won’t be able to recognize you past 5 feet.
You’re so lucky to have Hawa as your Advisor, so get ready for a year filled with jokes, meaningful
advice, and crossing the street without looking because pedestrians always have the right of way!

JULIET ALI-CACCAMO | 2025 | COG SCI, MEDICAL HUMANITIES | ST. PAUL, MN | DUNCAN
As far as Advisors go, it’s really hard to beat Juliet. Between being a pre-med student to serving up
delicious lattes at Rice Coffeehouse, this Minnesota-born cutie knows how to do it all. Except make
educated health choices (if you ever hear her contemplate drinking cold brew concentrate, STRONGLY
DISCOURAGE HER.) If I had a dollar for every time she was fashionably late, I’d probably be able to pay
off my student loans. She’s the queen of messy rooms, overdue laundry folding, extremely basic music
taste, and the untimely desire to chat with friends on Fondy 6th. But seriously, Juliet is an incredibly
empathetic, charming, and bubbly person, and it’s been the greatest pleasure to be able to call her one
of my best friends. She cherishes her relationships in a way that’s so beautifully rare, and will always
provide a shoulder to lean on when you need it. Juliet’s the life of the party but is also an incredibly
grounding force, and I know y’all will love her! (Also, if you ever get the chance, ask her to make her sig-
nature “earl green” drink for you — it’s divine!) No one has a bigger heart—or water bottle—than Juliet.

SAI MALLANNAGARI | 2024 | NEURO, ASIAN STUDIES | DUNCAN
If you are looking for a rugby-playing-neuroscience-studying stud who’s also on the Rice Bhangra
team, then Sai is your guy. If you are looking for help with chemistry, look elsewhere. When you
meet Sai, you will probably be complimenting one of his many playlists, many of which are inspired
by his love for Mac Miller. While Sai lives in Austin, he was born in India and grew up near Madison,
Wisconsin. This means that he is a Packers fan and you can roast him when Aaron Rodgers loses in
the playoffs. Sai is a wonderfully complex character who is often found to be zigging when others
are zagging. At one moment he is dominating the dance floor at South Asian Society events; the
next he is moving a seesaw into his dorm room for the entire spring semester of freshman year. At
the end of the day, Sai is a big goofball with a compassionate heart. He always puts others before
himself, and he is one of the nicest people I have ever met. It has been an absolute pleasure to live
with and be friends with Sai for the last two years and you should be ecstatic to meet this great guy.

SHANNON DUNWELL | 2024 | MECH | MONTGOMERY COUNTY, MD | DUNCAN
Shannon Dunwell is chaos incarnate. She’s an artist and a PowderPuff Player, a seamstress and a
Mechie, a Material Gworl and a budgeting queen, allergic to dogs and a ginger tea fiend. Unfor-
tunately, Texas culture (or lack thereof) does not agree with this DMV native; you might find her
fuming about it in Duncan commons or walking around campus at 3 am because this girl does not
sleep. Be warned, if you startle her on one of these walks, she might swing the padlock she keeps
on her lanyard (she played softball in high school so you know her swings hurt). More passions of
hers include: painting, beer bike chugging, cooking incredible meals (Jamaican beef patties iykyk),
giving tattoos, playing sports, taking the metro (because she knows she should not be allowed to
drive), and stealing your gummy bears (she has a sweet tooth). In all seriousness though, Shannon
is an amazing friend and an incredible listener who is always there to lend an ear and a word of
advice. It’s no wonder she’s so well-loved by everyone who gets to call her a friend.
– Tyler Foster, Kennedy King, Aaliyah Mobley, Nabeeha Ghani (all Duncan ‘24)
SHIVANI GOLLAPUDI | 2024 | BIOS, SOCI, GLOBAL HEALTH | FRISCO, TX | DUNCAN
Shivani Gollapudi is full of spontaneity, wit, and intelligence. Your five-second small talk with her can turn
into anything from an intense discussion about complex social theories or the ratio of cheese to dough
in mozzarella sticks. The living embodiment of SAD GIRLS LUV MONEY, Shivani is the life of any party,
and her adventurous spirit will always surprise you. Think she’s knocked out after a 3-hour orgo exam?
Shivani’s on her 4 a.m. “thinking about climate change” walk. Think she’s hard at work as the SA External
Vice President? Yes, but not without some exotic French music playing in the background. Think she’s FI-
NALLY getting some sleep after her 4 a.m. walk? No, she’s going for a 10k run (true story, don’t know how
she pulled it off). While her days may be 48 hours in length (does the girl ever sleep?), she’d be more than
happy to dedicate most of it to helping others and making everyone’s day a little brighter. While Shivani
loves coffee (ask her about her cold-brew drinking method), the one thing she loves more is getting to
know and connect with new people - we hope you’re ready for EspressO-Week, because she sure is!

STIAN DU PREEZ | 2025 | MATH | VAN, TX | DUNCAN
Stian du Preez is quite an interesting fellow who is very interested in a couple of things. First: Star
Wars, which is pretty good and all, but do you really need to wear a Star Wars shirt every single day
(and then a different one at night)? No. Does Stian do it? Of course. Like I said, an interesting fellow.
Second: Lego. The dude probably has every type of Lego brick that exists. Third: ice cream. Stian
grew up on farms in South Africa and Switzerland, so ice cream was not easily accessible. As Stian is
no longer on a farm in the middle of nowhere, he eats a lot of ice cream. Those are some of Stian’s
obsessions, but there are still some more things that make him a great Advisor and friend. Namely,
Stian has broken at most three rules in his entire life; he is the kind of person who always grabs pa-
per towels with two hands because the instructions say to; he read the entire Duncan constitution
before matriculating; he is perfecting his dad jokes; and when he is not studying, you can often catch
Stian swinging or tandem biking with his roommate. We can’t wait for you to meet him!
– Ethan Goore (Duncan ‘25)
VALERIA AGUIRRE | 2024 | ARCH, SWGS | JOLIET, IL | WILL RICE
Oh word! You got Valeria as an Advisor! You’re in for a treat because this 5’1 (don’t forget the
1) cutie from Chicago-ish is the wildest and most carefree being ever. If you struggle noticing
her on campus it’s because her wardrobe has been meticulously crafted to be the perfect
blend of earth tones. If not, you’ll see her rocking her gorgeous gym fits because this archi
cares about her structures - she can bench press you and your mom. Apart from that she’ll
probably be off being productive in Jones School of Business, whimsically going for a walk,
laughing at a hilarious joke her roommate (I) made, napping, or dancing to bachata whenever
she hears some music. She has the most contagious laugh and no single moment with her is
dull - apart from when she’s eating because she loves to people-watch :)

ADNAN LATEEF | 2023 | PSYCH, SOCI | HOUSTON, TX | DUNCAN
How would we describe Adnan? A kid in the Class of 2023 with *decent* handles on the basketball court, a
constant smile on his face, and flexing at least one Airpod (gen. 1) in at all times. As a Houston, Texas native
(if you count Alief as part of Houston), Adnan knows all about the city, where to find the best boba and
biryani, and also how to represent it with some hand sign that apparently everyone knows. Adnan is a (tri?)
lingual senior majoring in Psychology on the pre-med track. Don’t let that fool you though—he’s more likely
to be shooting around at the Rec than grinding in Fondren. His boys, his O-Week group, food, family, and
grades come first and everything else second. This man will be with you through thiCC (all the time in the
Rec pays off) and thin. In all seriousness, you can always count on Adnan to be there for you when you need
him most. He’s always a constant source of joy, and will be there to crack a joke or lend a sympathetic ear.
If you’re lucky enough to call this slim-thick brown boy your Advisor, get excited! Adnan’s lightheartedness
and thoughtfulness make him the perfect guy to welcome any New Student into Duncan.

JJ LEE | 2025 | PHYSICS | IRVINE, CA | JONES
Congratulations! You have been selected to be under the guidance of our esteemed Andrew
Lee. Andrew, who’s known better as JJ, is an ideal person to get to know when beginning your
journey here at Rice University. Don’t let his “hip” sounding nickname intimidate you, for JJ’s
got a heart of gold. JJ is funny, sociable, friendly, and always willing to listen to your problems.
Hailing from Southern California and majoring in Physics, JJ’s clearly got the brains and culture
to help you in various ways, whether it be food or academics. Don’t be afraid to approach this
man with a deck of cards, as he’s always down for card games (even if he rarely wins). Feel free
to chat with him about video games, basketball, anime, what it’s like to be Asian-Amerian, or
just about anything.

SHALIN MEHTA | 2024 | POLI SCI, SOPA | FAIRVIEW, TX | DUNCAN
There’s a few things you should know when you get arrested: one, don’t talk to the police, two,
get a lawyer. While he’s not there yet, Shalin is one man who provides great counsel legal or
otherwise. An avid sports fan from the Dallas-Fort Worth area, you’ll often find him yelling at
the TV as another Dallas sports team chokes in the mid-late season. But if he’s not watching the
Cowboys, you’ll certainly see him around Rice. He’s a pre-law student double majoring in politi-
cal science and social policy analysis, a member of the Rice Mock Trial Team, the Editor in Chief
of the Rice Journal of Public Policy, and a generally awesome dude. He’s spending the summer
working at the Brookings Institute in DC, but don’t worry, he’ll be back in time for O-week. He’s
as cool as a cucumber and sharp as a tack. Shalin is someone who is always there to help out,
whether it’s talking through a major decision, or just for a small favor. He’s a good person, and
a genuinely great friend.
– Evan Jasica (Duncan ’24)
WANQI YUAN | 2024 | CIVIL ENGINEERING | ORLANDO, FL | DUNCAN
If there’s one human who can do it all, it’s Wanqi. This civil engineering major (brains), gym rat (gains),
veteran nail artist (what-that‘s-so-insane) hailing from Orlando is going to be your new best friend and
#1 supporter. Things she enjoys: naps, protein powder (ask her about her collection, she’ll get a real kick
out of it), Martinelli’s Sparkling Apple Cider, and late night chats. Wanqi’s no-nonsense, here’s-the-facts,
did-you-eat-your-vegetables-today attitude, combined with her sky-high EQ and endearing habit of
asking “Say words again?” after zoning out, makes her the undisputed Mom Friend, and it’s blindingly
obvious how much she cares about those around her. As your Duncan LVP (Legislative Vice President)
and Beer Bike coordinator (BEEER BIIIKKEE) for the upcoming year, member of Engineers Without Bor-
ders, and Rice tour guide (catch her speedwalking, and sometimes tripping, backwards across campus),
she’s a natural born leader with an endless drive to serve others. If you got Wanqi as your Advisor, you
are WAN (luck)-QI Duncaroo. Rest assured that you are in good hands!

BOSUNG KIM | 2024 | COMP, PHILOSOPHY | DUBLIN, OH | DUNCAN
No need to introduce him, you’ve probably already seen his “original” Tiktok content on your For You
Page. Bosung is a studious young man hailing from Dublin, Ohio (not Ireland). A renowned chef, Bosung
cooks the best white rice this side of the Mississippi, unless he’s decided to bust out his other specialty:
microwave ramen. Put him on aux, and he’ll always know the vibe. A hopeless romantic, Himbo Kim-
bo loves romcoms, but has no luck with the rom (or the com). You’ll recognize Bo by his immaculate
style and loud personality, and while his looks could kill, he brings life to any party. He’s the guy who
comes up with the activities (though they may not be the smartest) when we are bored. There’s no
shortage of fun when Bo is in the building! A sk8r boi, simple farmer, clown, and sometimes petulant
child, Bosung’s look can change like the seasons depending on which thrift store he visited. Though
this Bot-swana wears many facades, once you find Bosung’s true self, you will come to know him as
a good time, good student, and good friend. Pro Tip! Ask him his brother’s name, you’ll thank us later.

MAX RUIZ | 2023 | NEURO, BIOS | LONGMONT, CO | DUNCAN
Hailing all the way from Colorado, this senior rowing stud is none other than Max Ruiz! He’s usu-
ally up before the break of dawn to go to rowing practice, so you know he’s a STRONG boi and
a dedicated man. Also, this former Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering pre-med can tell you
all about his mistake in thinking he can be CHBE AND pre-med. He’s now a Neuroscience major
and a Peer Academic Advisor, so he can whisper sweet songs of academic advising whenever
you’re struggle bussing with courses. Not only that, but this man literally has the most heartiest
meals I’ve ever seen. Like his plates are so colorful and beautiful, it’s actual GOALS. In all seri-
ousness, Max is an incredibly awesome guy who’s very comfortable and easy to talk to. If you’re
ever down in a rut, he’ll make sure to lift you up because that’s just who he is. He’s one of the
best people I’ve met at Duncan, and he’s the best Advisor you’ll ever have. Max’s New Students,
let’s just say you’ve hit the jackpot with this man.
– Anh Nguyen (Duncan ‘23)
MIA MAPULA | 2024 | COG SCI | HOUSTON, TX | LOVETT
You lucky duck!!! You have struck GOLD!!! You are now under the care of Mia Mapula! All the way
across the world from Houston, TX, Mia is usually seen learning something about Cognitive Science,
but that doesn’t mean she gives up acting, drawing, or critiquing movies. Literally, she will watch any
genre of movie or TV show, so if you ever need someone to watch a flick with, Mia is your person.
Better yet, if you ever get a sudden spark to do something, Mia is your person. There is something
peculiar about Mia that makes her different from everybody else. It’s not the fact that she has an
impeccable sense of fashion. It’s not the fact that she can recite Hereditary scenes. It’s not the fact
that she uses her calculator to add 1+1. Do you really want to know what it is? It’s the fact that she…
Don’t worry, you’ll figure it out by being her New Student – there is not a single word that could
summarize the amount of help and comfort that Mia will provide you when you are feeling down or
worried. She makes it her goal to get to know you and be the greatest resource to you!

TORI CARNEIRO ZHU | 2025 | ARCHITECTURE | ESPOSENDE, PORTUGAL | DUNCAN
If you’re looking for someone to walk you around campus, Tori is the girl to call. You’ll be introduced
to the three most important places in her life: Chaus, the architecture building, and Chaus! On your
walk, you may get the in on everything going on around campus, or maybe you’ll just get the in on her
go-to drink: the Nutty Bee (with whole milk, to be precise). You can often find Tori reading a book or
watching the Sidemen. Always make sure you look good around her because you never know when
she’ll snap a random photo and post it to her #casual Instagram diary. This international baddie has
lived in Hong Kong, Switzerland, and Portugal. She is always open to a good laugh and loves thrifting,
listening to music (check out one of her many curated Spotify playlists), going to concerts and movies,
or even just chatting for hours. Tori is characterized by her worldly perspective, spirited personality, and
generous compassion. She also has a huge love for Duncan and its community, getting involved in all
aspects of the university, from RHA to now, (lucky you), an O-Week Advisor!

ANDREW KIM | 2024 | SPORTS MED, BIOS, MEDICAL HUMANITIES | IRVINE, CA | DUNCAN
If he’s not around during an O-Week activity, he’s probably sleeping. If he’s not there for lunch,
he’s probably sleeping. If you’re wondering “what’s Andrew up to right now?”, there’s a good
chance he’s sleeping. However, don’t mistake all that rest for laziness. In the evenings you’ll
catch him out on the Rugby pitch with the rest of the Rice Rugby team (ask him about his action
shots), playing soccer, or pumping iron in the gym. But that’s not all! Baby Kim’s got the brain to
match his brawn. He’s a pre-med student studying Kinesiology, and doing research at McGovern
Medical School over the summer. An L.A. native, you may catch Andrew taking a study break to
watch literally any team from California fumble the bag. Or perhaps you’ll find him anteing up on
anything from the next super bowl winner to the winner of a foot race. Regardless, Andrew is
one-of-a-kind, and will be a great resource and friend throughout O-Week and beyond.

ASHNA KARPE | 2023 | PSYCH, BIOS | DUNCAN
Want a girl who is hella artsy and has one of the biggest hearts and brains I know? You’re lucky be-
cause THE Ashna Karpe is your Advisor! She is always one phone call away, so call her if you want to do
something spontaneous or rant about how difficult a class is. It literally does not matter the time of day.
Want to get boba at 9 PM? See you there. Want a work out buddy? She’ll be at the Rec in 15 minutes
tops. Want to try out a dance club? She will come with you and support you in every step of the way.
She may be doodling during class, but the finished product is always breathtaking. From digital art to
painting to watercolor, there is no medium she CANNOT use. We cannot forget about her degrees.
Interested in psycho-analyzing people? Her Psychology major can help with that. Interested in saving
the world one person at a time? Her pre-med and Medical Humanities education can help with that.
She is your SOURCE for pre-med knowledge so hit her up if you want to join the pre-med group. With
Ashna as your Advisor, O-Week is going to be one of your favorite memories at Rice.

CAMILO SOTO | 2025 | MATERIALS SCI | MIAMI, FL | DUNCAN
Camilo is the world’s biggest nerd. He collects Pokemon cards and wears different colored shorts
every day. He spends his free time procrastinating and talking about how much he loves and
misses Miami. He will refer to any/all friends as “my boy.” You are his boy, I am his boy, we are
all his boys, just accept it (I think it may be a Miami thing, idk just let it happen). He really is the
most social person you will ever meet. Camilo is so outgoing, easy to talk to, and just an amazing
friend. He is always down for a middle-of-the-night adventure or for deep talks on a hammock
at 3:00 am. He is also the world’s slowest eater….ever. If y’all are planning an O-Week lunch, make
sure you clear at least two hours out of your schedule beforehand so that you can wait for him
to finish eating. If you want to get him excited, ask him about his love for Spanish music, pool
floaties, or his crazy shoe collection. You could really talk to him for hours and not get bored!

SHRIA CHUG | 2024 | HEALTH, ANTHRO | AIMES, IA | JONES
Ever find yourself feeling down? Need a pick me up to lift your spirits? Lucky for you, you have stum-
bled upon a ball of energy known as Shria Chug! Be ready to hear her scream “YOU’RE SO CUTEEE” as
she rushes to give you a hug any time she sees you. This Iowa native (the city doesn’t matter, it’s all
cornfields) will always keep you on your toes, whether she’s pulling you to the dance floor and con-
vincing you to join Rice Bhangra or passionately defending Iowa sunsets. As a Health Science major,
pre-med and Rice Health Advisor, you know she’s got you with all your medical needs – after all, she
has loadsss of experience with her own unfortunate clumsiness. Hailing from Jones College, Shria is
so indecisive that she can’t even figure out her graduating class (junior or senior - nobody knows),
but don’t worry she would never think twice about ordering some Taco Bell with you or dropping
anything and everything to simply talk to you. Congratulations, you’ve gotta be the luckiest New

ADRIENNE BRADLEY | 2025 | HISTORY, SOCI, CINEMA | MARIETTA, GA | DUNCAN
Enticing everyone around her with her unrelenting pouty face, Adrienne Bradley is one of the brightest
and kindest souls you’ll meet. Despite being allergic to tree nuts, she likes to push boundaries every once
in a while. That philosophy can be applied to a lot of her life. When she isn’t eating frosting straight from
the tub, Adrienne can be found taking an afternoon nap, writing a last minute essay, or playing softball for
the Duncan Intramural Team. You can also cheer her on at Powderpuff games or on the stairmaster at the
Rec. If you ever want to start up a conversation, feel free to ask about her love for FunDip, endless photos
of her dog, Lady, or her unique Spotify playlists. Of her creative works, Adrienne is best known for her
dinosaur doodles, intricate makeup looks, and paper cranes smaller than her fingertips. Above all else, she
is an exceptional friend, teeming with enthusiasm for Duncan and love for everyone. She is always there
for a good hug, cuddle, or to provide the best head scratches around. You can count yourself incredibly
lucky to have Adrienne as your Advisor, as she is bound to be extremely kind and enthusiastic!

CHARLIE GORTON | 2023 | MECH | LONG BEACH, NY | DUNCAN
This laid-back Mechanical Engineering major is a senior from Long Beach, NY and he is so excited to
be one of your O-Week Advisors! Charlie is a fierce Mario Kart competitor and an Oshman Engineer-
ing Design Kitchen master craftsman. My favorite thing he’s built in this maker space is an adorable
3-D printed cat, but you should definitely ask him about his more ~involved~ design projects like the
robotic drinking assistance device he worked on last semester. When Charlie’s not doing homework
or thinking up a new passion project, you can find him in the quad throwing around a football or
playing Spikeball. For topics of conversation, try asking him about his most recent audiobook listen
or how last night’s poker game went. Charlie used to be well-known for his large beard, but since
coming to college and starting the Mechanical Engineering curriculum, he has learned to use simple
tools such as a razor. In all seriousness though, Charlie is the most calming and supportive person I
know, and I’m so glad he is one of the people there to help welcome you to your new home.

HARMONY MOORE | 2024 | BIOS | BELLEVILLE, IL | DUNCAN
You are so blessed to have Harmony as your O-Week Advisor! She’s literally just a phone call
away, and nothing will make her happier than being there for you - even at 4 a.m. when she
wakes up before her alarm that’s already set for 5. (She’s about as allergic to sleeping past 6 as
she is to nuts! Seriously, getting up at 7 is late for her!). She’s always singing sweet harmonies
that she can whip out in seconds (guess the talent comes with the name) and has a sweet tooth
to match. She loves donuts and ice cream but also lives for the workout grind, so she makes
sure to balance it out. This self-proclaimed bibliophile is quite fond of Fondy – it puts her in her
absolute happy place. (“Kinda lame.” - Priscilla). And the mom-energy is strong with this one; if
you ever need anything, she’ll be the first to say, “Here I am, send me! No worries, I’ve got you!”
– Jordan Killinger (Will Rice ’23), Priscilla Ibrahim (Hanszen ’25)
JERRON-MICHAEL ARLINE | 2025 | HEALTH, GLOBAL HEALTH | BEAUMONT, TX | JONES
Ah yes, the legend himself. Jerron-Michael is one of those people you always see because he is
so active on campus. He has a kind heart and the ability to get even a hermit crab to go out and
venture out into the Rice culture – you can anticipate that he will probably be dragging you to
every function at Rice. This dedicated pre-med may be one of the most dependable people on
the planet, and his undeniably jovial spirit and hilarious remarks will leave you gasping for air.
He’s always ready to talk (sometimes in Spanish), so don’t hesitate to stop him for a conversa-
tion! If you need help in any subject or class affiliated with being pre-med, he’s your guy, but
don’t ask him about his somewhat unhealthy love for seafood and R&B music (it won’t end well).
No matter what, Jerron-Michael is sure to make you feel comfortable and included. Congrats on
getting the greatest Co-Advisor that Rice has ever seen!
