The Poly is the trading name of The Royal Cornwall Polytechnic
Society - a charity dedicated to promoting the arts, history and
science in Cornwall since 1833.

Registered Charity Number:1081199 Company Number: 03909555

We invite you to join us to explore the history of the Falmouth area; find out
about the people who lived here in the past; and celebrate our Cornish culture.
This week-long programme includes a range of opportunities to meet people,
see hidden treasures, learn about our history, try new activities and attend
performances.
Thanks to funding from The National Lottery Celebrate Fund, all activities are
either free or low cost.
Whether you are young or old; know little about Falmouth’s past or want to build
on your knowledge; would like to get involved and have fun or just quietly view
old photographs; we hope you will find something that is right for you.
The programme has been planned by volunteers of Falmouth History Archive
with the support of Poly staff and many friends and supporters in the
community. It builds on the success of previous history exhibitions, archive days
and fun days as well as The Poly’s experience of offering a great range of
opportunities to get involved in the arts.
Read on to find out what’s happening when!
We look forward to seeing you!

Miriam Davies, Poly Intern/Project Support

The Falmouth History Archive is led by a friendly and committed group of
volunteers who have a wealth of knowledge about Falmouth and its history.
They care for vast collections of archives relating to Falmouth and the
surrounding area. This includes over 5000 photographs, many from the Victorian
era; original maps, plans, deeds, letters and other documents relating to
properties, businesses and organisations; a digitised collection of over 1000
postcards; over 400 books; a collection of original Falmouth Packet newspapers
dating from 1860 onwards; and approximately 60 taped oral history
conversations with local people.

The archive is based in the
Chellew Room, upstairs at
The Poly. It is open to the
public every Tuesday and
Thursday morning from
10am to 12 noon.

Why not pop in to say hello,
explore our collections, or
order copies of historic
photographs?

Like us on Facebook to find out what we are up to and let us know if you would
like to help us to preserve our archive for future generations and spread the
word about the history of our amazing town.

To the many people who have supported us in turning our idea for a Falmouth
History Week into a reality—from The National Lottery Fund and sponsors of art
competition prizes to the organisations, groups, individuals and schools who
agreed to get involved.

Special thanks to the many individuals and volunteers from Falmouth History
Archive, The Poly, other local archives and history groups who have given hours
of your time free of charge to help us with this week of celebrations.

We look forward to seeing you again soon!
