Children's Advocacy Center of Collin County 2017 Annual Report

2017 ANNUAL REPORT

Children’s Advocacy Center
of Collin County provides safety,
healing, and justice for children
victimized by abuse or neglect

in our community.

As a tribute to 25 years of service
to the Collin County community, each photo
proudly displayed in this book was taken

at the Center or Center event.

Dear Friends,

Collin County is a great place to live, there
is no doubt about it. Multiple sources have
validated this fact by listing several Collin
County cities, Plano, Allen, McKinney, and
Frisco, as the “Best Place to Live” in the past
five years. There are many reasons Collin County
has been recognized as “the best”- the cost of
living, job opportunities, high quality schools,
and the safety of our streets.

By ensuring the safety of our children and our community, Children’s
Advocacy Center of Collin County is one of the key contributing factors to
this distinction. What could be more important than ensuring our children
are safe, and that those who harm children are held accountable? Nothing.
And no one does it better than Collin County.

This year, the Center recognizes 25 years of service to our community.
As supporters, you have been a part of building this Center and growing it
into what it is today: a state of the art healing facility, recognized nationally
as a model for others in how to do this work.

Children’s Advocacy Center is more than a charity, we are an essential
service. We provide a service that no one else provides and that cannot be
duplicated by anyone else. We are unique and critical to the health and
safety of the Collin County community.

There is no doubt that Collin County is poised for exponential growth over
the next 25 years. Our goal is to make sure that no child is ever turned away,
and we are now in the process of making plans to ensure that never happens.

In the meantime, we know that you, as supporters of the Center are standing
right beside us, helping us to fight the good fight every step of the way. We
also know that as we step into the future with growth beyond anything we
have seen before, you will be there too. Collin County is a great place to live,
and you are the reason why.

Going forward over the next 25 years, we want to be sure that each child
who walks through our doors has all they need to heal, and go on to lead
healthy, happy lives. We know that with you beside us, it will happen.

With sincere gratitude,

Lynne McLean, Chief Executive Officer

Exponential Growth

When Children’s Advocacy Center of Collin County
opened its doors in 1992, the total population

of Collin County was 292,321, with a child
population of only 83,478.

Twenty-five years later, the child population

has grown 211 percent, to 259,572,

a number just shy of the total
population of 1992.

= 10,000 children

The projected child population for
2050 is nearly 3x the child population of 2016.

Programs

In the beginning, the Center could only offer forensic
interviews and therapy. To meet the needs of our clients,
program services needed to expand. The Family Advocacy
and Support Services department was added as an in-
depth, emergency aid program. In addition, the Sexual
Assault Nurse Examination program, Kids in Court, the
Community Education Program, and The Kids Count
Players, were all established. The Clinical Program also
experienced significant expansion over the years to meet
the critical needs of childhood trauma victims.

In 2017, the Multi-Disciplinary Team reviewed 323
cases, the Center provided 12,186 therapy services
and conducted 1,047 Forensic Interviews, Family
Advocacy provided 1,926 services, 151 children

received Medical Evaluations, and our Rainbow Room

served 870 clients. The Center provided a total of
20,922 services to 3,515 clients in 2017.

Projects

To date, the Center has helped over 60,000 children and

families throughout the community. Annual service projects,
Back to School Fair and Holiday Project have increased
the number of children served with each passing year. The
annual Holiday Project is a charitable endeavor of Children’s
Advocacy Center of Collin County that ensures children
served by the Center have the joyful holiday each child
deserves. In 1992, the Center’s first Holiday Project served

84 children and in 2017, 1,092 children were served.

The annual Back to School Fair equips children who are
current clients of the Center or Child Protective Services
for the new school year by providing them with brand new
backpacks, shoes, haircuts, and school supplies. In 2017,

the Back to School Fair served 585 additional clients of the

Center.

Here We Grow

As the population of Collin County exploded, so did
the number of alleged victims. With that growth came
an increased demand for our services. To meet this
demand, the Center moved from its humble location on
15th Street to a small house on Avenue K. The growth of
Collin County continued, taking the Center to its current
location on Los Rios Boulevard in 1992, where we
have the capacity to offer services to 100% of children
victimized by abuse or neglect, without a waiting list.

Events

Throughout our history, events have played an integral
role in generating funds needed to support our programs.
Teddy Bear Ride, the longest standing fundraiser for the

Center, began in 1993 with 50 riders providing teddy

bears to comfort children during the most difficult of

times. The event now consists of nearly 800 riders and
generates $40,000 annually. In years past, the Center

hosted a golf tournament known as the Rainbow Classic.
Over time, the tournament has evolved into what is now

the Healing Hearts Invitational - raising over $50,000

annually. Then there is Gala, the Center’s signature event.
From its inception as a tribute dinner, to the million-
dollar event it has become, supporters look forward to
this premier event all year.

Volunteers

The Center is fortunate to have a group of volunteers
dedicated to helping us achieve our mission. Volunteers
assist all members of our Multi-Disciplinary Team
including Child Protective Services, Law Enforcement,
and Center staff. Volunteers are vital to the success
of Children’s Advocacy Center of Collin County. Since
2001, the number of volunteers has increased from

200 to 1,467. From child care in the Activity Center,

to building bookshelves and picnic tables, to keeping our

Rainbow Room fully stocked and organized, to the 23

members of The Kids Count Players puppet troop - our
faithful volunteers make it possible for us to dedicate our
time to our clients. In 2017, these volunteers devoted

5,643 hours to the Center.
