Where to place the firewall?

T here are some common t opologies of placing f irewall wit hin a net work. In t his
t ut orial, I will use a Dual-Homed Firewall t opology.

In Dual-Homed t opology, t he f irewall is conf igured t o handle everything, f rom
cont rolling client s int ernet access t o VPN Sit e-t o-sit e wit h business vendors. A
Fort igat e 200B is a very good candidat e f or t his model. Or you could choose
t o use Juniper or Cisco Firewalls, it 's all your decision. T he f irewall is placed
just right behind the ISP Router. In t his example, I assume t hat you're using a
managed int ernet service wit h an ISP provided rout er; t heref ore, t he only t hing
you received f rom t he ISP is just t he IP inf ormat ion. You have no access to
the ISP Router in t he pict ure (even it is shipped and operat ed at your
locat ion). T o access t he int ernet , your net work must point t he t he IP of t his
ISP rout er and use it as t he int ernet gat eway or def ault gat eway.
