PseudoSense: Biosensor for
Pseudomonas aeruginosa detection

IP Registration No. PI2020005886

Background of invention

Antibiotic-resistant bacteria, Pseudomonas aeruginosa is the major cause of various infections such
as chronic wound infections, burns, bacteremia, cystic fibrosis, and urinary tract infections.
Microbial culture methods and lab-based Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) test have been widely
used as a gold standard for diagnosing P. aeruginosa infections. However, it is challenging to scale
up PCR tests for mass-testing of p. aeruginosa infections since it requires specialized laboratories,
sophisticated instrumentations operated by trained persons and time-consuming steps. Therefore,
there is a compelling need for a rapid, cost-effective and simple technique for diagnosis of P.
aeruginosa infections in less than 24 hours with a point of care setting. Herein, we developed a
field-portable method based biosensor for rapid detection of p. aeruginosa. With this invention,
less sample preparation is needed and the results can be obtained in less than 15 minutes.

The disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370
in March 2014 following the crash of Air France
Flight 447 five years earlier prompted a new push
to scrutinize global tracking of commercial aircraft
flying within remote areas of the world. The UN's
aviation agency has announced new regulations
that will allow for airplanes to be tracked in real-
time, two years after the disappearance of
Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370. This incident has
triggered the requirement for the continuous
monitoring of aircraft during flight. The
requirement for aircraft to carry autonomous
distress tracking devices, which can autonomously
transmit location information at least once every
minute in distress circumstances. The requirement
for aircraft to be equipped with a means to have
flight recorder data recovered and made available
in a timely manner.

TROPICAL RAINSTORM LIGHTS (TRL)

IP Registration No. PI 2014703947

When driving in a rainstorm and visibility is low,
many drivers are quick to turn on a vehicle's
hazard lights, thinking that this will help other
drivers behind to see his vehicle in the rain.
Another reason is to alert other drivers that the
vehicle is being driven slowly due to the rain.
Although turning on the hazard lights in the rain is
well-meaning, it is a practice which is against the
traffic regulations and can do more harm than
good. Additional rear warning lights system
referred to as Tropical Rainstorm Lights or TRL.

The TRL system emits a yellow green/lime
yellow colour light, distinguishing its
appearance from the existing amber-
coloured 4-way hazard lights system. The
system is separated from the existing 4-way
hazard lights system but inter-dependent.
TRL system will shut down upon activation
of the hazard lights system and will allow
only one warning system to be activated at
one time. TRL system will be able to be
activated only whenever the hazard lights
system is deactivated. When a vehicle
activates the TRL, it indicates that the
vehicle is moving. Thus drivers behind are
able to differentiate between a stationary
and a moving vehicle. This would prevent
drivers from turning ‘ON’ the hazard lights
while driving.

BAMBOOCRETE MULTI-PURPOSE PANEL

IP Registration No. UI 2018002959

Escalating prices of new houses, building materials
and labour cost cause difficulties for low income
group to own a house. By using suitable low cost
building materials, coupled with do-it-yourself
construction technology, will push housing price to
an affordable level. Functional, technical and
financial requirement is the criteria of building
materials to be selected. However, sustainability
has become one of the important criterion in
building materials selection. Bamboo is widely
known as renewable and easily available raw
material resources. Bamboo can enhance socio-
economic benefits in certain continent. It also can
act as reinforcement to enhance strength of
certain structural members.

This research and product named
Bamboocrete Multipurpose Panel is the
sample made from lightweight concrete
reinforced with bamboo and acts as the new
alternative in achieving affordable and
sustainable building materials in construction
industries. With the proven design axial
strength of 100 kN (10 Ton), it achieves the
functional and technical requirement as wall
panel. The bamboocrete then were subjected
to four-point bending and achieved ultimate
load of up to 30 kN. The bamboo used in
concrete panel greatly contributed to the
bending capacities of the panel.
Bamboocrete returns to almost its original
form after the load removal. Further,
bamboo used in concrete panel can be used
in earthquake or a hurricane prone areas,
where it provides flexibility for the panel.

PolyCRETE Mortar

IP Registration No. PI2020001977

PRODUCT BACKGROUND/ INFORMATION
MAX: Wall, as a weather resistance provides a
protection to prevent outside temperature affects
the room temperature directly. However, the
insulation of heat on different types of materials
are different. In addition, the thickness effects on
how many percent heat energy is transferred into
the room and affects the room temperature.
Thermal resistance is a variable value that
measures the ability of a material to block heat
rather than radiate it. PolyCRETE is a solution for
this as heat insulator. The product can be used in
all buildings as plastering material. It is also
suitable to be used for sand brick wall as it can
reduce heat flow. It also reduces almost 30% of
cement usage in plastering walls as shown in
figure. Rate of the heat flows into the wall sample
was reduced by the polystyrene for both clay brick
wall and sand brick wall by max 3 oC.

HIGH PERFORMANCE PROPELLENT

Currently Malaysian Armed Forces is rely
on SME Ordnance Sdn Bhd to supply the
bullet. SME Ordnance is getting their
resources from the other international
company. If we can produced our own
propellant using our owned expertise,
resources definitely we can stand on our
owned. The sample of Rhizophora
apiculata tree was collected from
industrial waste before being processed
to become an explosive material known
as nitrocellulose (NC). NC can be used as
propellant for super performance bullet.
It is a flashless and smokeless gun
powder. NC can produced higher muzzle
velocity so that it can improve firing
distance and accuracy. It also required
higher stopping power which mean it can
penetrate bullet proof vest if the vest is
design to overcome normal performance
bullet. NC required no barrel husbandry
compared to the normal propellant
because it is smokeless gun powder so
that the barrel life can be extend.

WATER TREATMENT PLANT SLUDGE FOR
CARBON DIOXIDE (CO2) REMOVAL

IP Registration No. PI 2016703796

The alum sludge which is also known as water
treatment residual or waterworks sludge contains
high amount of aluminium due to usage of Al
compound as the coagulant. Annually about
80,000 tons of the alum sludge waste is produced
from water treatment plants. Management of the
alum sludge has become important environmental
issue due to stringent environmental regulation
and increasing public awareness. Reuse of the
alum sludge as building, construction and
cementitious materials; land improvement
additives such as structural soil improver have
been known. Also, for removal of carbon dioxide
(CO2), an undesirable greenhouse gas which
creates operational and economic issues, there is a
need for effective and inexpensive CO2 removal
technologies.

High efficiency, cost effective and
novel sorbent/filter for removal of
carbon dioxide (CO2) using drinking
water treatment plant sludge. The
removal efficiency of CO2 was
evaluated at lab scale and using real

Wave energy convertor (WEC) offers the potential
to revolutionise power production globally. WEC
harnesses the enormous renewable energy
presents in our ocean's waves and converts it into
two of the most valuable commodities
underpinning the sustainable growth of the
planet; zero-emission electricity. Heave Buoy Wave
Energy Convertor is a wave-energy technology that
converts kinetic energy from ocean swell into
electrical power. This Unit will incorporate subsea
electricity production, power take-off (PTO) which
uses subsea cables to connect to an onshore
substation. The PTO will be contained inside the
buoy that will eliminate the tendency of the
pumps, accumulators and other hydraulic
components attached to the seabed. This also
reduce installation and maintenance time and cost
as the entire WEC Unit can be towed to shore for
any routine maintenance required.

CONTINUOUSLY VARIABLE

TRANSMISSION (CVT)

IP Registration No. PI 2016704170

Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) system
offers smooth transition between variable
transmission ratios to improve the acceleration
performance and reduce fuel consumption and
vehicle’s emissions. Currently, most of the
developed CVT system is actuated by an internal
hydraulic circuit where compressibility of oil
introduces non-linearity to the system, causing
unwanted difficulty in controlling the response of
CVT. Therefore, a new design which is free from
hydraulic system is proposed to overcome the
shortcomings in the existing CVT without losing its
performance. The proposed CVT system is
designed based on the belt-driven type consists of
two sets of sectional pulley. A set of sectional
pulley is actuated by an electric motor using slider
crank mechanism. The sectional pulleys are
arranged in radial direction which is able to slide
inward and outward of the carrier.

Threshold Concepts in Military Officers’

Education

IP Registration No. CRLY00012350

Deriving from a doctoral study, this model discusses threshold concepts needed to
facilitates successful ontological shifts in becoming a military officer. Drawing from
threshold concept theory, the model provides a helpful analytical tool to examine the
process deemed necessary for transformation from civilian status to thinking and
practising as a soldier and consequently a military officer. Combined with
phenomenography as the research methodology, the research involved seven higher
ranking officers, 24 military trainers, and 29 officer cadets from two reputable military
education institutions in Europe. The findings show that there are two ontological shifts
that transform a civilian to become an officer. During Phase I, the first ontological shift in
becoming a soldier involves the acceptance of discipline and obedience, recognition of a
framework of related ethics and values, loyalty to the unit (collective above individual
needs) and a sense of obligation. Meanwhile, Phase II will require a soldier to understand
the concept of personal responsibility for the execution of mission, putting others before
self, and the ‘power to command’ to complete the transformation in becoming a military
officer.
