PREPARING EACH STUDENT FOR COLLEGE, CAREER, AND LIFE

Course Description:

NAVAL SCIENCE 3

PURPOSE: To broaden the understanding of cadets in the operative principles of Military leadership; the concept and
significance of teamwork; the intrinsic value of good order and discipline in the accomplishments of objectives; Military
Drill; the importance of sea power and national security; more in-depth knowledge of Naval ships and aircraft; an
introduction to marine navigation and seamanship..

COURSE CONTENT: Includes instruction in Sea Power and National Security, Naval Operations and Support Functions,
Military Law and the Sea. Provides instruction to ship construction and damage Control, Shipboard Organization and
Watch Standing, Basic Seamanship, Marine Navigation, and Naval Weapons and Aircraft. Ongoing instruction in
leadership, citizenship, and discipline.

Course Competencies/ Learning Targets

Students who successfully complete Naval Science 3 will be competent in the following areas:
● Students will be able to demonstrate the concept of effective leadership.
● Students will be able to properly conduct a military personal inspection.
● Students will be able to pass the physical fitness examination.
● Students will be able to demonstrate the knowledge of the U.S. Naval contributions to our

Country.

Attendance Policy

General Attendance Procedures

For any absence to be excused, on the first day a student returns, a handwritten note or a medical doctor’s excuse must
be submitted. Please review the list of excused absences in the Henry County Schools Student Handbook listed on page
five (5).

While classes are in an online status, students are expected to be logged into their assigned Google Meet Classroom on
time. Students will be marked tardy after the first 5 minutes have expired.

Classroom Expectations
This class will be administered in a highly interactive manner. Your attendance at every class session is extremely
important.

NJROTC Daily Dress Codes
a. Military Wear – In accordance with Cadet Field Manual NAVADTRA 37116-F
b. Civilian Wear – In addition to school dress code
c. No earrings for male JROTC Cadets in NJROTC Classes/Wing
d. No sagging trousers in JROTC Classroom, Trousers must have a belt
e. No braids or twist for males
f. All shirts tucked in trousers in classroom
g. Grooming standards in accordance with instruction by cadets (male and female), includes hair, and shaving
for males

Student Behavior: Each Student is expected to behave according to NJROTC Classroom rules and student handbook.
Consequences will be assigned as indicated in the classroom rules and student handbook.

BASIC RULES OF CONDUCT: (An exhaustive list can be found in the 3120)
a. Be on time
b. Be at my seat at parade rest BEFORE the tardy bell rings.
c. NO CELL PHONES in class. Stow them away before or upon entering class.
d. Get permission before leaving seat or class.
e. Speak only when called upon or given permission.
f. Stay awake and alert in class, or voluntarily stand up.
g. No eating, chewing gum, or grooming in class, unless authorized.
h. Turn in all assignments on time.
i. Knock before entering the instructor’s office.
j. Come to class prepared and participate in discussions/activities/assignments

VIOLATIONS OF BASIC RULES OF CONDUCT WILL RESULT IN:
a. Oral Reprimand
b. Written reprimand JROTC Counseling form
c. Contact Parent
d. Suspension of or reduction in rank
e. Student discipline referral form
f. Disenrollment from the program

Class Requirements

MANDATORY LUELLA NJROTC DUES:
ALL Cadets: $25 (covers entire school year)
Luella NJROTC Unit will provide the following items for new cadets:

a. NJROTC - Naval Service Uniform (NSU)
b. Physical Training Uniform (PTU)
c. Name Tag

UNIFORM RETURN POLICY: ANY CADET THAT IS REMOVED FROM THE PROGRAM OR UPON COMPLETION OF
THE SCHOOL YEAR, IS TO RETURN THEIR UNIFORM TO THE NJROTC UNIT SUPPLY OFFICER. Failure to do so
could result in a fine of approximately $300, and school administration will place a hold on student records. The uniform
can be turned in dry cleaned, with the bill, or returned in good condition with $10 so that we can get the uniform
laundered.

LATE ASSIGNMENTS: Please check all work prior to submission to ensure it is complete. Homework is due at the
beginning of class. If it is not submitted at that time, it is considered late and will not be accepted without penalty.

MAKE UP POLICY: Test, make-up work and assignments will ONLY be given to students providing documentation of an
excused absence. Each student is expected to pick-up all make-up work from his/her assigned student folder. Any
makeup test or class assignments requiring more than thirty (30) minutes will be made up before or after school as
scheduled by the classroom instructor.

Re-do Policy: All students will be given an opportunity to master course content in an effort to ensure proficiency on the
EOCT, and Final Exam.

I HAVE READ AND UNDERSTAND THE SYLLABUS AND I UNDERSTAND THAT AT THE END OF THE SCHOOL
YEAR UNIFORMS MUST BE TURNED IN DRY CLEANED. IF UNIFORMS ARE NOT TURNED IN THE CADET WILL
RECEIVE AN INCOMPLETE FOR THEIR FINAL GRADE UNTIL THE UNIFORM IS TURNED IN, ALSO, I COULD
SUFFER WAGE GARNISHMENT FROM THE UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT IN EXCESS OF $300.

Plagiarism, Cheating, and Academic Integrity
Plagiarism is the practice of copying words, sentences, images, or ideas for use in written or oral assessments without
giving proper credit to the source. Cheating is defined as the giving or receiving of illegal help on anything that has been
determined by the teacher to be an individual effort. Both are considered serious offenses and will significantly affect your
course grade. Please refer to the Student Code of Conduct booklet for additional information.

Methodology
Films, slides, field trips, guest speakers, military drill, physical exercise, and library use. Academic integrity is
fundamental to the process of learning and evaluating academic performance. Academic dishonesty will not be tolerated.
Academic dishonesty includes, but is not limited to the following: cheating, plagiarism, tampering with academic records
and examinations, falsifying identity, and being an accessory to acts of academic dishonesty.
