Series circuit and parallel circuit

Science Year 5

PdPR SCIENCE YEAR 5 DLP
29 JULY 2021
THURSDAY

08.30am - 10.00am
THEME: PHYSICAL SCIENCE

TOPIC: 5. ELECTRICITY

CONTENT STANDARD:
5.2 Series circuit and parallel circuit
LEARNING STANDARD:
5.2.1 Identify the arrangement of bulbs in series and parallel in a

complete circuit.
5.2.2 Sketch the series and parallel circuit diagrams using symbols.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
At the end of this lesson, pupils are able to:
1. Identify series and parallel circuit based on the circuit diagram

given.
2. Build series and parallel circuits and sketch the diagrams using

symbols

SERIES CIRCUIT
AND

PARALLEL CIRCUIT…..

1

• In a series circuit, the bulbs are connected next to each other.
• The electricity must flow through all the bulbs.
• If more bulbs are connected in a series circuit, the dimmer the bulbs will

be
• A break in the filament of any bulb will cause a break in the circuit and

the bulbs will not light up. This is because the circuit is not complete.

2

• In a parallel circuit, the bulbs are connected using parallel
connections.

• All bulbs will light up with the same brightness because each bulb
receives all the energy supplied by the cells.

• All the bulbs will take as much current as a single bulb will.
Therefore, the cells lose their energy quickly.

• A break in the filament of any bulb in one branch of the circuit will
prevent the flow of current only in that branch

• Current can still flow through the other branches and continue to
light up the other bulbs.

COMPONENTS OF ELECTRIC CIRCUIT AND THEIR FUNCTIONS

Component Function

Dry cell Supplies a small amount of electric current./
source of electrical energy
Connecting wire
Connects all components in an electric circuit.

Bulb Converts electrical energy into light energy.

Switch Breaks or completes a circuit/
Controls the flow of electricity in a circuit.

A COMPLETE CIRCUIT ALLOWS ELECTRIC CURRENT TO FLOW THROUGH IT
