Helping Children Worldwide

On Saturday, September 8, beginning at 7:00 p.m., please join us in the
Welcome Center for a casual night of modern musical classics performed by
Sonja Tussing and her band. The event is free and any donations will go to
Helping Children Worldwide, which strengthens communities in Sierra
Leone, one of the poorest countries in the world, by supporting programs
that provide vulnerable children and their families with opportunities for
education, health care, and spiritual mentoring. The Child Rescue Centre
(CRC) and Mercy Hospital are especially focused on education, family
stability, maternal health, infant survival, and childhood nutrition. By partnering with local government and child
advocacy organizations in Sierra Leone, the CRC and Mercy Hospital help children and families achieve their wonderful,
God-given potential. Join us on September 8 to transform lives and communities. Questions and request for information
can be sent to Jerry Kohns at [email protected]

From the Senior Pastor

Methodists, generally speaking, don’t have different beliefs From September 9-30, we’ll share a sermon series called
than other Christians, but Methodists certainly emphasize “Faith Flix.” Over the course of these four weeks, we’ll see

some of our Christian beliefs more than others. One of our if we can hear the Lord speaking through four movies: 1)
emphasized beliefs is “prevenient grace.” Grace is God’s “On a Clear Day” (PG-13) (September 9) 2) “A Beautiful

undeserved presence and favor. Prevenient means coming Mind” (PG-13) (September 16) 3) “The King’s Speech” (R)
before. So, prevenient grace is God’s undeserved presence (September 23), and 4) “Up” (PG) (September 30).

and favor working in a person’s life before he or she is If you are able (taking their ratings into account) to view
asking for it, or even aware of it. Our lives are changed and these movies before we think about them in church, our
worship experience will be enhanced on those days. If we
healed when we do begin consciously inviting God’s grace are able to remember that Jesus speaks through the most
to fill our hearts, but grace keeps knocking and knocking unlikely people and in the most unlikely places to wake us
whether we ever hear the knocking or not.

So, if this “knocking” is everywhere and all the time, we to our need for him, we may just hear a word from God.

ought to see some of this knocking occurring in the Bring a friend and join us for worship at our BBQ kickoff
imaginations of film writers! Yes, we can expect to see on September 9 and throughout the rest of the month!

A Short Story of Abundant Grace

1. We were contacted by Homestretch* with news of someone who needed a car to help get out of poverty.
2. We put it in the bulletin.
3. A church member told their family member. The family member contacted the church.
4. The person is now getting a car to help them get out of poverty.
Our church is not perfect. But God does not let that stop this amazing grace from showing up in people's lives. Thanks
be to God!
*Homestretch is one of our partners in the Manger Ministry to prevent and end homelessness in Fairfax County.

Dear Friends,

As you know, Mainline Protestant Churches in the U.S. have experienced disagreement about human sexuality for several
decades. The United Methodist Church is currently experiencing disagreement about same sex marriage and LGBTQ
ordination. One thing that makes our United Methodist case different from other denominations is our connectional
governance. This has set us on our own unique path. In The United Methodist Church, the General Conference (a
convention of elected delegates from across the denomination) speaks for all local congregations regarding social positions
and theology, including the Central Conferences outside the U.S. To be United Methodist means to be covenanted to one
another through the General Conference. In other words, local churches in the UMC are more “tied together” than in
some other denominations. The General Conference speaks for St. Stephen’s and every other United Methodist
congregation, including the Central Conferences outside the U.S.

Typically the General Conference convenes once every four years for a two week session. It cannot speak in between
sessions. The United Methodist Church, at the 2016 General Conference, created a group to work together to find creative
solutions to our disagreements about human sexuality and to make recommendations to a special called General
Conference in February of 2019. This group is called “The Commission on a Way Forward”. The COWF does not have
any power to enact legislation. Their function is to attempt to craft creative proposals for the denomination. The General
Conference in 2019 will review their proposals (and possibly others) and either accept, reject, modify, or possibly choose
not to act on those recommendations.

Since the United Methodist Church has worked with this issue at every General Conference in recent memory, one way of
making sense of this special called 2019 General Conference is to ask “What’s new and what’s different from previous
General Conferences?”

Here’s what’s new:

We, as a denomination, approach the 2019 General Conference with a heightened sense of urgency to resolve the
impasse within the UMC.

The business of this General Conference is dedicated exclusively to conversation about human sexuality. All other
denominational business will wait for the regularly scheduled 2020 General Conference.

Here’s what’s the same:

The COWF has only proposed ideas (perhaps with variations) that have been discussed at previous General
Conferences. Therefore, the 2019 General Conference will likely hear and act on proposals similar to the proposals
at prior General Conferences.

The delegates at the 2019 GC will be, for the most part, the same delegates that attended the 2016 GC.
Voting procedures and rules will be the same as at other GCs.

It is very difficult, playing the role of prognosticator, to predict what, if any, action GC 2019 may take. Stay tuned, and
pray for God’s leading for our denomination. At St. Stephen’s we will continue to focus on our mission to make disciples,
pray for our denominational legislative body, and address any action that may be taken, when and if that time comes.

We plan to hold three identical info sessions in September at St. Stephen’s: 1) Tuesday, the 11th at 2PM. 2) Thursday, the
13th at 7:30PM. 3) Thursday, the 20th at 7:30PM. At these sessions, we will explain this process in more detail and field
questions about the process. The focus of these sessions will be on conveying available information.

May God’s grace lead and guide you this day and always.

Searching for Outreach Committee Members

If you are looking for a way to serve the Community at large, please consider joining our Outreach Committee – we are
recruiting! It’s not scary, and it only takes about 60 minutes of your time to attend a monthly meeting. The Outreach
Committee works with approximately 20+ ministries that help reflect Christ as the catalyst for community, inclusive and
engaged, igniting mission and service for all. The Outreach Committee reviews policy matters and budget formulation and
execution to make these ministries effective. If you’d like to know more about the role of serving, please contact one of
the Committee’s Co-Chairs, Glen Bottoms, 703-978-4871, [email protected]; or Sandra Gregory, 703-626-2378,
[email protected].

Blood Drive

Every day, approximately 200 donors must donate whole blood, red cells, platelets and plasma to support the diverse
needs of the patients in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area. Currently there is a critical need for the following types
of blood: O+, O-, B+, B- and A-.

You can help by being a blood donor. The next St. Stephen’s blood drive, conducted by Inova Blood Donor Services, will
be Monday, Sept. 17 , from 2:00 pm – 7:00 pm in the Fellowship Hall. You are eligible to donate if you are in good
health, weigh at least 110 pounds, are at least 16 years of age, and have not donated whole blood since July 24. Also, the
Inova team will have the ALYX system available for those who wish to donate “double reds.”

If you have previously signed up to donate, you will be contacted to confirm your appointment. New donors are
especially welcome. Please consider being a blood donor and giving someone “the gift of life”. Contact Roger Hartman to
schedule an appointment or for more information: 703-425-7268; [email protected].

2nd Cup

Have you been missing your Monday morning coffee? Not a fan of coffee? We have tea! We would love for you to join
us for a warm cuppa & conversation at 2nd Cup, a social group for women. We provide the coffee, tea, listening ears and
a short devotional. You will find us Monday Sept 10 at 9:15 in the Welcome Center. Free childcare for Infants and
preschoolers will be available.

Acolyte Training

If your child or teen expressed an interest in serving as one of our acolytes during worship at either 8:30 or 11 a.m.
service, participate in our training session on Sunday, September 16 at 12:15 p.m. Students must be a 2nd grader or older.
Students and parents are required to attend training together. Please RSVP to the church office.
