Shepherd's Center of Fairfax-Burke Launches New Program

A Handy Helper program is now offered for SCFB clients who need assistance in their homes, including minor yard
work, limited house cleaning, and minor home repairs. At this time, services are only available on Saturdays by a small
group of volunteers, but we hope it can grow based on the need of our senior clients. If you need help in changing light
bulbs, hanging curtains/pictures, changing batteries, trimming bushes, planting flowers, cleaning windows, etc., contact
by email, Michael Hampton, at: [email protected]. If you are interested in volunteering to help in this
program or have questions about the program, contact Barry Wickersham, 703-203-8929.

Transportation Program

If you no longer drive and need transportation to a medical appointment (Monday - Friday) or an accompanied
shopping drive (offered Tuesday pm and Friday am), contact the SCFB office at 703-323-4788 at least five days in
advance to make arrangements for a driver.

Volunteers Needed as Office Workers and Drivers!

The Shepherd’s Center of Fairfax-Burke serves those 50+ who no longer drive. Drivers' trips usually take about two
hours and average 20 miles for destinations to medical, dental or rehab appointments, and shopping locations in the
Fairfax-Burke area. Office workers take phone requests for volunteer drivers, in advance, for medical transportation
Monday through Friday and for Companion Shopping on Tuesday afternoons and Friday mornings.

Volunteers work in our office at 4019 Olley Lane, Fairfax, for three hours every other week. If you can volunteer your
time, please contact Barry Wickersham at 703-359-2918 or the SCFB office at 703-323-4788.

St. Stephens Endowment

Have you considered leaving a legacy that will last? Consider including the St. Stephens Endowment Fund in your estate
planning. For more information, please contact the Endowment Committee chairperson, Gregg Snow, 703-489-3780.

Summer's coming, and Church & Society Committee will again host some casual gatherings related to the UMC Social
Principles. We'll share Just Dinners on a series of Fridays (July 13-August 17) at Panera in West Springfield, discussing a
different faith-in-daily-life issue each week. We gather starting at 6:30, grab a table, and discuss/eat 7:00-8:00. Topics
come from UMC's FaithLink curriculum; copies will be available in the Gathering Place on the prior Sunday if you'd like
to read ahead of time.

Summer Book Discussion on Racial Justice - Sunday evenings

Join in the discussion of racial justice and faith and the book, The New Jim Crow by Michelle Alexander. We'll meet
Sunday evenings (July 1st-August 5th), 7-8 pm at church. If you're interested, sign up through the weekly bulletin or let
Gary Klinger, Lorac Lawton, or Cathy Liverman know or just come on Sunday evening. We'll join in learning, discussing,
and praying together.

Please donate new school supplies! Hope you'll consider joining in this joint Outreach Ministries effort to collect school
supplies that will be evenly distributed for many ministries that serve children in need: Wesley Housing, Browne
Education Center, FACETS, African Programs, and Grace Ministries. Pencils, pens, markers, crayons, scissors,
construction paper, notebooks, art supplies, and any other school supplies are needed. Special request for Sierra Leone

Collecting bins will in the Gathering Place in July and early August. Thanks!
