Content Analysis of GEO, HUM & ARY Dramas and Impact on Society DEPARTMENT OF RURAL SOCIOLOGY – UNIVERSITY OF AGRICULTURE, FAISALABAD Page 9 Badzaat - Geo Entertainment, 2022 Written by: Misbah Nousheen | Directed by: Siraj ul Haq | Produced by: 7th Sky Production Badzaat is a Pakistani drama whose story revolves around a big joint family where certain complicated household relations leave everyone jealous and insecure about their lives due to egos and disturbing conflicts from the past. It also sheds light on how complex home dynamics cause everyone to feel uneasy and envious about their lives and distressing previous fights. It is a socialpsychological drama serial that focuses on how childhood traumas makes a person's perspective worst. Wali is a rich young man who is known for his rude and snobbish behavior. He was a neglected child of a mother who never had time for him and instead chose to focus on her singing/dancing career. Facing this harsh reality of his life in his childhood make him a rude and arrogant man. Rather than seeing things in grey, Wali is accustomed to perceiving things either in black or white. Another character, Daniyal is Wali’s cousin and competitor, he is jealous of Wali’s persona and leaves no opportunity to defame or insult him. Anabia is an obedient and disciplined young girl who travels with her mother to attend the wedding of one of their distant relatives. One unfortunate incident changes the course of Wali, Daniyal, and Anabia’s life forever. Daniyal’s approach towards Anabia drastically impacts her life and soon Daniyal’s growing aggression begins to bother Wali who develops a soft corner for Anabia. As the story moves forward, Daniyal makes Biya his object of desire, attempts to rape her and then ends up married to her and attempts to murder her on their wedding night. At this point, any sane mother would remove her daughter from this more-than-abusive marriage, but Biya remains in that household, is abused daily, threatened, insulted, physically assaulted only because she loves Wali. Wali saves her in every worst situation and as the story moves toward end, Biya gets divorced, winds up living like a nomad, hiding herself from Daniyal and his family but here again Wali helps her and she ends up married to Wali. This drama is basically an attempt to highlight the crime and criminal attitudes because of childhood traumas. Daniyal becomes deviant because he is jealous of Wali, Wali becomes arrogant because of his traumas, another character, Wali's sister Zoya, becomes deviant because she also wants to be a dancer but Wali don't want her to be. So in short, in many ways they glamourized physical violence and marital rape by Daniyal's character and in the end he didn't get the punishment he deserves. Wali marries to Anabiya which is another way of romanticizing toxic love. So, as the title shows, this drama is a mess up of those characters who are traumatized, arrogant and toxic in their own ways and because of their week personalities, their attitudes & behaviours leads to crime.

One day, Akram finds a young rich, arrogant man harassing someone on the road, and when he goes to confront this man, the man points a gun at Akram. This man turns out to be Shamsher. Mehak and Rehan plead with him and bring Akram back to the car, but Shamsher sees Mehak, and immediately falls in love with her. Once Shamsher finds out who Mehak is and where she lives, he tries multiple evil ways to get Mehak to marry him, including getting Akram arrested for a while and kidnapping Ahsan on their wedding day. When Mehak finally gives in and agrees to marry Shamsher to save her the lives of her loved ones, he is thrilled and promises to love Mehak and protect her till his last breath. Shamsher's father Dilawar is a very rich and arrogant man, who is also extremely powerful and influential, and he doesn't approve of Mehak since she is poor so he decided to murder Mehak on the day of her wedding with Shamsher but somehow Mehak manages to survive and her parents settled her in another city. Shamsher comes in front of her and takes the bullet. The hitman finds out about this, and tells Dilawar that the people he sent to kill Mehak shot Shamsher instead, and that he is critical. This leaves Dilawar devastated as he fears losing his son and that too because of his own stupidity and pride. Shamsher then regains consciousness and professes his love to Mehak as does she for the first time. And right at that moment, Shamsher takes his final breath. There is a 3 year time jump, Mehak is celebrating the second birthday of her son named after his father, Shamsher, then Mehak turns to a portrait of her husband Shamsher, and she talks about how she can never forget about what he did to her before their marriage and how she tries to not make her son become aggressive and angry like his father, but Mehak also says that she will always love Shamsher and will always keep him alive in her memories. If we conclude the whole story, the plot covers the deviant behaviours of characters and glamourize toxic romance. A person randomly likes a girl, chased her everywhere, kidnapped her & end up to marriage. After all this, the girl also falls in love with the same person because of the one her whole family suffered once. When Shamsher was bad, Mehak was forced to marry him. When he was good, she loved him and was on her way to "happily ever after" Shamsher dies. This is not justice; this is unnecessarily written tragedy. The only one being punished in this scenario is Mehak, who has been the victim from beginning to end.

Content Analysis of GEO, HUM & ARY Dramas and Impact on Society DEPARTMENT OF RURAL SOCIOLOGY – UNIVERSITY OF AGRICULTURE, FAISALABAD Page 1 7 Ishq Hai – Last Episode (2021). The new TV series is directed by Aabis Raza and written by Rehana Aftab Ishq Hai is a tale of two lovers, a Shakespearean tragedy set in South Asia where the conflict between tradition and individual freedom comes into play. An age long question within our Pakistani culture; should the tradition of arranged marriage be questioned? How important is the right to choose your own life partner? The drama has a star studded cast of young and veteran actors and is an exclusive ARY Digital Production. This was undoubtedly the worst Pakistani TV show I have ever seen from start to finish. The plot was dramatic, recycled garbage that we have seen on Indian and Pak TV time and time again, all of the characters in the show had two dimensional personalities, there was absolutely nothing original or creative in its writing, the performances were purposefully, overly melodramatic, distancing itself any sort of reality that we live in and worst of all, Ishq Hai just proved that they had absolutely no intention of putting any effort into making an original show. The female representation was once again terrible, highly influenced by “saas/ bahou” dramas of India. Let us also not forget that our protagonist drugged, kidnapped and forcefully married Isra. How can this ever be normalised is beyond my comprehension of human decency! Due to lack of substantial content, the show creators resorted to abusing slow motion to death so that it prolongs the life and duration of the show (not to mention the unnatural use of the title song throughout its 38 episodes!). Minor praise can be given to the production team, costumes and set designs as their efforts are very evident onscreen. Unlike many other shows out there, the wedding scenes felt authentic with a large number of extras and the scenes played well at times with light and silhouettes. Watching a show like Ishq Hai depresses me to no end because I know that our country can produce much better quality content than this. We have young talented filmmakers out there who do not have to look at Indian Soap Operas for inspiration (or better yet, take inspiration from Indian Independent cinema!). Pakistan is blessed with creative minds and acting talent, its high time we start using it to its full potential. At the end of the day, Ishq Hai is yet another blemish on the face of Pakistani television which will be replaced by yet another “Ishq Hai” with recycled plot and terrible performances. My only request for content creators and financiers of Pakistani dramas; do not undermine the intelligence of your viewers and give them something meaningful to watch. No doubt television can highly influence its audience, why not something worthwhile that could eradicate the faults of society like oppression of women or respecting a different point of view? But at this point in time, it’s sadly just wishful thinking.
