Question 1
a). DEMAND TRENDS FOR FOODS AND CONSUMER PRODUCTS DUE TO
ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGES.
• Demand reduction due to school closure
It was noted that there is a reduction on demand such as milk for school lunch
and , raw milk for dairy products and also frozen foods for business use due to
school closure.
The changes in demand due to school closure are explained as below:
Figure 1 changes in demand due to school closure
In the Figure 1 above, the curve DD is the demand curve for the products that were
mentioned earlier which are affected due to school closure. Due to the decrease in
demand, the demand curve was shift to leftward from D0 to D1. The factor that shift the
demand curve is due to change in consumer expectations due to COVID-19 pandemic.
• Expanding demand for stay at home and infection prevention
Next, due to increasing awareness of stay at home and COVID-19 infection prevention,
it has increased the demand for instant foods, frozen foods and hygiene products i.e.,
masks and hand sanitizer.
The changes in demand due to school closure are explained as below:
Figure 1 expanding demand for stay at home and infection prevention
As shown in the figure 2 above, the curve DD is the demand curve for stay at home
and infection preventions products. Due to the increase in demand, the demand curve
was shift to the right from D0 to D1.The factor that shift the demand curve is due to
change in number of buyers and change in consumer expectations due to COVID-19
pandemic.
• Reduction demand due to suspension of business
Besides, the article also said that due to the COVID – 19 pandemic there is decreasing
demand for products like liquors for restaurant such as beer due to suspension
business
The changes in demand due to suspension of business are explained as below:
Figure 2 changes in demand due to suspension of business
Next in the figure 3 above, the curve DD is the demand curve for stay at home and
infection preventions products. Due to the decreased in demand, the demand curve
was shift to the right from D0 to D1.The factors that shift the demand curve is due to
change in consumer expectations due to COVID-19 pandemic.
• REDUCTION DEMAND DUE TO RESTAINT FROM GOING OUT AND
WORKING FROM HOME
Lastly, from the article it’s stated that there is reduction in demand due to restraint
from going out and working from home for products such as cosmetics and
sunscreen
Figure 3 changes in demand due to restraint from going out and working from home
In figure 4 shown the curve DD is the demand curve for stay at home and infection
preventions products. Due to the decreased in demand, the demand curve was shift
to the right from D0 to D1.The factors that shift the demand curve is due to change in
number of buyers and change in consume due to COVID-19 pandemic.
In summary, the change in consumer expectations and change in number of buyers
were the determinant that shifts the demand curve.
b). Government intervention on organizing changes in the environment for
foods and consumer goods during COVID-19.
Due to COVID-19 changes, there are changes in purchasing behavior based on
consumer perspective. The government encouraged buyer to stay at home and avoid
stores and face-to-face trading. Buyers are suggested to use e-commerce, home
delivery and contactless delivery. The demand for delivery service increased. There
also changes in what to buy. The function of the product and the origin of product are
more important than price and brand. Such as face mask and hand sanitizer. The
demand for face mask and hand sanitizer increased because of the pandemic. That
is the way to decreased the risk of getting infected. People use the face mask and
hand sanitizer to avoid getting infected and reducing state spending to treat patients
when infected with COVID-19.
Besides, changing in buying frequency. The demand for essential goods, normal
necessity goods and inferior goods increased. Market need to hoarding and buying in
bulk from manufacturer to avoid product shortages. This is because buyers also buy
in bulk to avoid food shortages while at home and they do not have to go to stores
often. Market hoarding products to prevent other buyers from being unable to
purchase goods or running out of goods especially for essential goods such as hand
sanitizer, normal necessity goods such as instant coffee and inferior goods such as
tinned sardines.
The government request to suspension of business and close school. Business such
as food service industry and school closures. Students need to online-learning and
stay at home. Due to that, the demand for electronic devices such as laptop and tablet
increased. The government also give subsidy to students who need electronic device
for online learning.
On companys perspective, they were asked to change in working style (remote work).
Workers need to work from home and the work only on tasks essential to maintain
business activities such as production department, ordering department and customer
center and to avoid losses. If the company unable to pay workers' salaries, they had
to lay off workers to minimize workers and the unemployment rate will rise or increase.
On competitors perspective. The expectations of the industry, they need to increase
social roles and responsibilities of food and consumer goods manufacturers. Ensuring
the stable product supply and safety and security so that the goods to be purchased
are always available and stocks must be available continuously to prevent buyers from
not being able to buy their necessities, especially foods. They also have to support
requests from the national and local governments based on what the buyers needs
and they have to follow the ceiling price setted by the government so that they do not
take advantage of the buyers or reap excessive profits. For example, the ceiling price
for Covid-19 antigen rapid test kit is RM19.90 per set.
c) Advantages and disadvantages of ceiling price.
ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES
Protects producer’s income : Emergence of black market :
consumers can buy products at consumer tends to buy with higher
lower prices. price to overcome shortage.
Can restrain inflation. Reduce in quantity produced
because of low price and
producers cannot make much profit.
Producers tend to receive illegal
payments from consumers :
desperate consumer will pay bribe
to obtain goods & services.
