02 DESMO AUGUST 2023 AUGUST 2023 DESMO 03 ISSUE 270 Finally, spring / summer has arrived, and with it a multitude of events, ride-outs, shows, and race meetings to attend – many occurring on the same weekend. If you haven’t looked already, the club’s facebook page usually shows various events, and of course, there’s the diary in Desmo, and on the website if you’re stuck for places to go / people to meet etc. The AGM has been and gone, Martyn has given a brief report of it on page 20. The event was sadly the last appearance of Clive Fitzgerald, who passed away not long after. He will be missed by many, having been a stalwart of the club for around 20 years, including stints as Treasurer and MAG rep on the club’s CoM. Our thoughts are with his wife Rosie, his family and many friends. Electric Ducatis – with the news that Ducati is supplying all the bikes for the MotoE series, it seems that Ducati are taking this very seriously, and this has been noted by the mainstream press. DOC GB member David Warner kindly sent me a link to the excellent article in the Telegraph, highlighting Ducati’s use of VW technology in their quest for perfection. I’m not sure if the sound of the current MotoGP bikes can ever be replaced by the MotoE bikes, but excellent to see Ducati at the head of technology in this area. Saturday 13 May 2023 will be remembered as an historical date in the Ducati books as it will be the fi rst race in Ducati’s history by a Ducati 100% electric. Your thoughts? In the meantime, enjoy the sound (and sight) of your Ducati – maybe in the company of other Ducatisti! The Star award winner for this edition is Robert Tiffi n who wrote the interesting article about his trip to Bologna. Robert will receive a copy of the Ducati Year Book for his contribution. 08 DESMO AUGUST 2023 ISSUE 270 NOTIZIE Ducati Singles / Tiddler News Russell Benney writes: A new Autumn TIC has also been arranged to cater for those who could not be accommodated this month. For that one, we set-off in late September from Barcelona and arrive in Porto on the 2nd Oct. We still have a couple of places left for those interested (tiddlers only please). The big one – The Three Moors Run, commences this year on 10th September, for 500 miles of West Country fun. The dilemma we face is this – how on earth do we give you something new and improve on the well proven Somerset and Devon routes that have been so popular? We are reluctant to forgo some of our ‘classic’ sections, but yet getting some fresh lanes in is always nice. That’s our problem… And actually what a pleasant one! There are literally two unfilled places for the TMR – again tiddlers only please. Contact Russell for more info russell. [email protected] The Crankcase Ian and Brigette write: As we do ‘almost’ every year, The Crankcase will be holding the annual ‘Tea party’ bar-be-que at The Crankcase, Usinger Strasse 21, D61267 Neu-Anspach – Westerfeld, Germany. Saturday 1st July 2023. The plan is that around 10 am: ride out to www.vollgasrennspass.de Hinter der Radrennbahn Heidelberger Str. 150, 64285 Darmstadt; evening: ‘Bikers Tea Party: with BBQ and friends in our yard. Sunday 2nd July 2023 ride out together... Evening: dinner and drinks in Westerfeld. For food and drink in our yard on Saturday, you may make a donation to help us support the costs. Otherwise, please understand all risks and costs will be your responsibility. You are also welcome to arrive early and stay later – many of those coming from further away often arrive on Friday and leave on Monday which gives time to take a tour together around the local roads. Hope to see you then. Look for accommodation on airbnb or similar if you need. Hotel Velte is just around the corner! https://www.landhotel-velte. de/ But! Please let us know if you will be coming by, so that we can arrange to have enough cups!

08 DESMO AUGUST 2023 AUGUST 2023 DESMO 09 ISSUE 270 Best wishes and we are really looking forward to another fantastic long weekend. Ian and Brigitte Alderton, Usinger Strasse 21, 61267 NeuAnspach, Germany. Landline: +49-(0)6081 - 4488336 Mobile: +49-(0)160 - 1000049 Email: [email protected] Another Challenge for Peter Graves! Long time Ducatisti will no doubt recall Peter Graves – over his 15 years of racing his career highlights include BSB (where he podiumed a private Ducati 888), world endurance (where he again podiumed with Phase One at Spa 24hrs); a year on a Harris 500 in GP – and won a number of British championship races for Mitsui Yamaha on the R1 in 98 and 99. He also took 5th in the European championships riding a Yamaha FZR 600 in 1991. The teams he raced with included the Cadburys Team, Atlantic 252 Radio Ducati team, and BT Phonecards sponsorship for the Yamahas with Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman in 1999. Not a bad cv! I n July 1997 Peter was diagnosed with Leukaemia and sat out the remainder of the racing season while undergoing Chemotherapy at Cheltenham General Hospital and Hammersmith Hospital. In 1998 he returned to the British Superbike Championship and won the ‘Privateers Cup’ on his first race back at Brands Hatch, a fantastic achievement. He then retired in 1999. Now Peter is raising funds for Street Doctors and other youth charities with the William Waites Memorial Trust. He writes: Le Loop follows the official route of the Tour de France, one week ahead of the professionals and finishes 21 stages later in Paris, some 3,400kms later. Riders tackle one of a selection of “Loops” riding anything from 2 to all 21 stages of the Tour de France route. Every participant commits to raising a minimum amount for the William Wates Memorial Trust (WWMT). The fundraised money is entirely separate from the participation fee – donations do not pay for my Tour. All monies raised go directly to the William Wates Memorial Trust whose mission is to help the most disadvantaged young people keep away from a life of crime and violence and fulfil their potential. This is achieved by giving grants to charities that engage young people through the medium of sports, arts and education. It’s been a tough couple of years for charities and particularly for young people. This is my chance to give something back and help support young people who aren’t lucky enough to enjoy the advantages in life that most of us take for granted. Le Loop is no small undertaking. Riding even ONE stage of the Tour de France route is going to hurt! Please reward my pain by giving generously. The link is https://fundraising.wwmt.org/ fundraisers/petergraves or read more about the charity itself wwmt.rideleloop.org. Merci! Have any ideas for an article? Got some items you want to sell? AUGUST 2023 DESMO 13 ISSUE 270 12 DESMO AUGUST 2023 As many of you may be aware I started working for Ducati Preston back in January. I did work for the group quite a few years ago so this is my second stint, am I loving it? Well what do you think, I have been in after-sales / service departments in the motor trade for nearly 30 years so I have a bit of experience and don’t just work there because of a love of the brand. It is busy and as most Ducati dealers we are a small team. What this does enable me to do is to ride the new bikes, I know, I know but some of mine recently had to be sold. I have done some miles on the new V4 Diavel and it is a superb bike. Still very much a Diavel plus some. The Streetfi ghter V2 is a lovely bike, I took the storm green one to the AGM but last week I fell in love: the Streetfi ghter V4s, way too much power, pops and snarls, makes all kinds of noises and the look is drop dead gorgeous, need to do some overtime now. We Ride As One event will have been, it did clash with a big one, the King’s Coronation. This is a worldwide event and it was thought that it had to be the same date the world over. Events are fl ying in and with more branches and - with more club members than we have ever seen in the club’s 49 year history - is a great success; this is against a lot of clubs seeing declining members. Use the time to get to a meet or a ride and use your Ducati. Moto GP Saturdays have come alive with the sprint race, full power, sticky tyre and all to go for, I for one am enjoying it. Ducati are going very well, Bagnaia back on top after a crash at a slippy COTA race, the other Ducati teams close behind. There are a lot of Ducati GP bikes in the grid but Ducati make them for other teams to lease so they are going to be popular. Bautista going well again in World Superbikes, I am sure the other team (yes, you know the one) will be complaining. Great to see Bulega also leading the charge in Supersport on the small V2, not so small anymore. BSB hotting up as well; personally I like Tommy Bridewell, now with PBM for this year with the Beer Monster team, great racing at Oulton Park. Glen Irwin (the other PBM Beer Monster rider) now leading. Moto Rapido have Christian Iddon this year, getting to grips with the bike and the team, I am hoping he gets some good results. Moto Rapido also in Supersport with Ben Currie, the bike looks and sounds superb, 3rd in the championship. Well worth a weekend watching this great championship. 16 DESMO AUGUST 2023 ISSUE 270 I have been planning a trip to Morocco for a few years now and nearly managed to ride it back in 2020 but we all know what happened then as the whole country and all of Europe went into total lockdown. Not one to give up easily, the idea, along with the itinerary, were put on the back burner until things settled down which fortunately, they did. So, with a renewed enthusiasm I set about resurrecting the idea and asked a few other Nene Valley Ducati Owners Club GB members if they fancied joining me which surprisingly, they did. So, with long term travel companions Steve Staines and Chris Short, plus Michael and Danny Wilkins, ferries from Plymouth to Santander were booked along with the first few hotels. The dates were set to maximise SteveS’s holiday using bank holidays, weekends and some annual leave to be from 29 March to 23 April which would give us a good chunk of time in Morocco without us having to rush. We met bright and early at the Uppingham Harley Davidson dealership and enjoyed a few nice roads to warm up which started the ride off nicely. A small argument with a Honda Jazz 50 miles in was the only issue which could have scuppered the whole trip. My fault entirely, wet roads, wet setting on the bike, and a car doing an emergency stop meant that the rear of the car and the front left side of my bike endured a slight remodelling. I think Ducatis are built a little better than Hondas. The ride along the Fosse Way was superb if more than a little damp. Once on the M5 the heavens really opened up soaking us nearly to the skin. We had no real holdups so made good progress. The final member of the team Christopher Short joined us at the ferry terminal. Checking in was straightforward and finding the cabin – which was quite compact - was a breeze. I don’t think any of us were looking forward to the crossing as the sea was looking pretty menacing! The crossing itself turned out not to be too bad but the snoring was a little loud for the size of the cabin! Once we had docked it took around 2 hours to get off which was painful, particularly as we had to stand around in full motorcycling kit. The ride through the Picos was phenomenal. Limestone walls along beautiful rivers made me think about getting the canoes out for a spin. Absolutely no traffic meant the roads could be enjoyed to the full. We eventually arrived at ‘Casa Rural El’ in Villalon de Campos with great relief as we all felt the trip had started in earnest, until we found out that all the restaurants were closed. ChrisS worked his magic and soon we were enjoying some fabulous food (still don’t know what it was). Wine, beer and great food is all you need. 18 DESMO AUGUST 2023 ISSUE 270 DAY 1. Done. About 200 miles on the road. Not bad for my first ever bike road trip (passed my CBT last Easter and my full licence midSeptember). DAY 2. Done. 630kms or so. Early start, (so no setting off pic) then motorway to Reims for a quick coffee. Then N and D roads to Besançon, with lunch in Langres along the way. Some fantastic roads and views of the Marne valley. Only 40 miles from Switzerland and suddenly there’s a lot of hills! DAY 3. Started in France. Switzerland started well. Spectacular views. Then heavy rain set in around Lausanne and stayed all the way to the Saint Bernard tunnel. Except by then it was thick snow and -4! Still, made it across/through/over and had a really enjoyable last hour riding the Italian SP roads to Turin. The very kind hotel porters let me park the bike safely in the courtyard too! V tired from the concentration in the snow, but still managed to find a little bit of The Italian Job! DAY 4. Turin to Bologna. Warming up nicely and had to stop for a coffee as soon as I crossed into Motor Valley. DAY 5. Ducati and Ferrari. Nothing else to say, the pictures say it all. Petrolheads, enjoy… DAY 6. Twistie hunting in the Apennine hills. Incredible roads. La Dolce Vita. DAY 7. It was a quiet day with Posy and Diggers. We visited Rossini’s house and the music museum, and generally mooched around the city. DAY 8. It was a mixed bag. Highlights were the Lamborghini museum, and the Ducati Scrambler restaurant for dinner. Low points were Posy and Diggers heading off on the train, then one of my panniers going missing. It’s either been stolen, or it fell off riding to the Lambos. Either way, my fault for not securing it properly. Wonky looking bike all the way home! DAY 9. Bologna to Nice. One of the best days so far. The hills were full of cloud pockets as I crossed into BY ROBERT TIFFIN diary of a trip to bologna and back. S TA R S TA A R T I C L E T C R L A E

18 DESMO AUGUST 2023 AUGUST 2023 DESMO 19 ISSUE 270 B O L O G N A BY LISA RICHARDS Tuscany, and then again crossing into Liguria. Then the route hugged the gorgeous Mediterranean coast. Dropped off the motorway at San Remo and took the old coast road to Nice. Through Monaco and Beaulieu Sur Mer. Nice itself was a bit of a scrum, but there are loads of bikes out in this part of the world. Finished the day with 18 degree sun at 6.30pm and a decent, cold beer. What a day! DAY 10. Hard work. 385 mile day. Early start leaving Provence and the warmth behind. Every turn of the motorway brought a different view that looked like a Cezanne or Gauguin. Turned right to go through the Ardeche and was suddenly met with strong side winds all the way up the Rhone valley to Vienne, when it then started to rain. Turned left into the Auvergne and the scenery was spectacular. But then the rain started. The last 50 miles to ClermontFerrand had very heavy rain, side winds and very steep slopes. It was probably more treacherous than the snow in the Alps. But like any sensible rider, I slowed down, took my time, and it was no problem. I also managed to fi nd the fi rst British car I’ve seen on the trip , which was a giant motorhome with UK plates and Scots fl ags on it, and I tucked behind them for shelter for a good 25 miles through the worst of it. Whoever you were, you saved my bacon! FROM THE TREASURER The London marathon is now completed and I am really pleased with my fi nishing time of 3.48.18, which was ten minutes faster than running this course the previous year. The day was unfortunately wet and was extremely busy on the course with over 48,000 runners taking part. Overtaking slower runners and fi nding space on the course did take its toll during the last stage of the race although I did manage to maintain consistent split times throughout the 26.2 miles. I have been riding the Ducati scrambler since its launch in 2015 previously owning the Icon, Italia Independent, and, since 2019, the amazing cafe racer. Last night I was extremely happy to be invited and excited to attend the next generation scrambler tour in London. The venue Outernet certainly suited the bike’s character and the presentation and hospitality by Ducati UK was exceptional. The next generation models of the Icon - Full Throttle and Nightshift - were revealed with the models character presented by a bespoke light show and music set. With the more modern design which you can also bespoke with up to nine different colour options, the new Desmodue engine weighing around 2.5kg lighter than the previous models I certainly cannot wait to ride one of the next generation. Ride Safe!

ISSUE 270 BRANCH REPORTS B R I S T O L Fantastic to have benefi t of lighter evenings and of late we’ve been able to sit outside and chat for the branch meets at the Red Lion, which are always great fun and with good friendly banter, help and advice being spread amongst everyone. Our local dealer Riders of Bristol have this year started a bike night on the fi rst Tuesday of the summer months giving us another opportunity to get together, both so far have been well attended with superb food on offer. Summer is really getting going now and looking forward to meeting up with other local branches throughout the season. Anton CORNWALL 'COUNTY LINES' I t’s a sunny Sunday, the bikes polished now where to ride? Most UK Ducatisti have North, South, East and West to ride but down here in Cornwall we are somewhat limited. Any direction other than East and things get wet pretty quickly. In fact, if the Tamar River were just 3 miles longer, Cornwall would be an Island! So our only county border, fortunately, is with Devon. Apart from eating their ‘Cream Teas’ upside-down, we get on very well with our neighbours. So our fi rst breakfast meeting of this season was near the border at Louis Teas Rooms (Cream on top), which enticed some Devonisti to come over to the dark side this particular cloudy Sunday (16th April). 14 Ducatis, 16 people nice coffee and views across the centre of Cornwall make it a very pleasant meeting point. The Devon branch meeting was the previous day at GT Motorcycles in Plymouth so I was so pleased when many 22 DESMO AUGUST 2023

ISSUE 270 of them made the trip out on the Sunday too. With many different models, new faces (and old, like mine) it made for much banter and tea slurping. The twisty county roads make for interesting rides to and from our meetings too. When Martin McGregor and I took up the mantle of Cornwall DOC GB organisers a year ago, we met, like most branches, at a specifi c location once a month. However, that pub was closing, so we tried changing the venue each summer month to a different place in the county. It proved very successful. We see many more of our members now, as well as meeting our friends from across the border. So, if you are ever visiting our county, we have meetings on the 1st Wednesday evening and 3rd Sunday for breakfast. Just contact me for the location. We’re friendly and don’t bite, unless you scone, cream, jam of course. Nick KENT ‘SPITFIRES' What Ho! The weather is killing the branch meets! We have had no luck for the past 4 meets, rain and snow! This has limited us arranging rides to and from the meet, but I’m pleased we are getting ‘Spitfi res’ attending and enjoying the venue. I just hope the weather improves and allows us to get riding groups there and a car park full of Ducati’s, watch this space! There are lots of events added now to the Facebook page, I’m hoping we can get good attendance at them all. If you want to arrange a ride, please post up, don’t wait for others! Following a great day trip to France in March, I have now booked a return day trip to France for a branch trip in May. A few have booked on already, but it will be nice for us to get a branch group over there for a day to enjoy the riding and food! Also keep eye out for the Wednesday night rides. That time of year is on us now and we try to get to Rye, or bike meets on a Wednesday after work. We also had ‘Spitfi res’ attend the Sussex Branch meet, and we hope to do more with Sussex, Surrey and London branches this year. We also would love those branches to join us at our monthly meet. May/ June looks busy and I will be reporting on our adventures, so make sure you get along and be part of the fun! Tally Ho! Lewis 22 DESMO AUGUST 2023 AUGUST 2023 DESMO 23 BRANCH REPORTS
