Dipping into Salt Water

It was once said that: “Life is not what happens to you, it is how
you perceive it”. There is much truth to this lesson and it can be
found at our Seder Night tables. The original story takes place in
the Torah immediately after the Jewish People have crossed the
Red Sea. After the sea splits, the Torah mentions that the
Children of Israel travelled three days into the desert and could
not find any water to drink and in classic style they started complaining.

“They came to Marah, but they could not drink the waters of Marah because they (the
waters) were bitter (ki marim hem); therefore they named it Marah.” (Shemot 15:23)

Rabbi Menachem Mendel of Kotzk translates the words 'ki marim hem' (because they
were bitter) as referring not to the waters, but to the people. Bitter people will find
complaints about everything. What we believe and how we choose to see our situation
in life will determine to a greater degree our experiences. Put simply: The attitude we
bring to life equals our reality. To bitter people, everything is bitter. But the opposite
can also be true.

We are reminded of this fact each Seder Night when we customarily dip a bitter herb
into salt water. Life at times can resemble the bitter herb. We don’t always get the life
we had hoped for. We are not always so fortunate to lead a carefree existence where
laughter and joy permeate every moment. That’s the Maror – the bitter herb. But what
we do next will determine how we EXPERIENCE that herb, how we perceive our lives.
Yes, on Seder Night, we dip it into salt water and taste the pain of slavery. But the lesson
remains: our lives and how we experience them are in our hands to ‘dip’. Will we
choose to see the cup as half empty or will we decide to celebrate what we indeed are
blessed with! And on Seder Night we have four cups to keep choosing from! Our
challenge is to see beyond the bitterness, and for people who aren't bitter everything is
possible.

How do we develop this attitude? By pausing, stopping and appreciating what it is that
we have. This Pesach as we dip our herbs into salt water, let’s apply this lesson to our
lives. We can gain clarity and serenity in even the most challenging circumstances. With
the right outlook, even our challenges can become sweetened.

From Sarah, Shira, Shmuel, Dvorah, Batsheva (she’s so cute, now 2 months old!) and
myself, we wish you and your family a Chag Kasher V’Sameach – a Sweet and Joyful
Pesach.

Rabbi Mark Fishman

4 Adar–Nisan-Iyar 5778

From The Rabbi Emeritus
The mounds of snow keep piling higher and higher, kept
preserved by the bone chilling -20’ish C deep freeze which
seems unending. Montreal in the winter! Does it get any
better?

What keeps us going besides the layers of clothing we wear or
the virtual hibernation many of us adopt? When winter seems
unending, what fuels us to stay the course in anticipation of
better times yet to come? Even the most avid winter outdoors person will admit
that weeks of dark, drab and sub-zero temp days can become most depressing
and even foreboding.

For me it’s the vision of Pesach soon to be upon us. Snow, ice, cold be gone;
Pesach officially commemorates the bringing of the Pascal lamb as a sign of
independence from enslavement in Egypt. It is technically referred to in our
prayers as Chag HaMatzot symbolizing the poor man’s bread eaten as they
prepared for the exodus and for seven days thereafter as they left in haste. Its
third name, Chag HaChairut not only celebrates Jewish Freedom Bayamim
HaHaim (past)but also the continuing challenge to preserve freedom for all
Bazman Hazeh(present).

But it is the fourth name of the Holiday… Chag HaAviv..the holiday of Springtime,
that makes it all possible. Our ability to see springtime even in the dead of
winter, creates for each of us the potential of new beginnings; the ability to make
the impossible..possible; to forget the cruel cold winds of history that often tend
to overwhelm us and creates new potential paths of co-existence and mutual
respect for all humankind. In fact, crazy as it sounds, the truth is, Pesach is
anytime!

To think spring time in the dead of winter requires a special quality. Consider the
following scene:

A darkened room with four candles burning. As the flames flicker it appears as if
they are speaking. Let us listen in.

The first says: ‘I am PEACE, however it appears that nobody can keep me lit.
Time for me to go.’ And the flame slowly diminishes and then goes out
completely.

The second one says: ‘ I am FAITH. It appears I am no longer indispensable, so
it makes no sense for me to stay lit any longer.’ With that said, a slight breeze
blew on it and it was gone.

The third candle then speaks in a halting sad tone: ‘I am LOVE. I no longer have
the strength to stay lit. People so easily shunt me aside failing to realize my

March – April 2018 5

importance. They even forget those who are nearest to them.’ And waiting no
longer, it goes out.

Suddenly a child enters the room and sees three candles no longer burning.
With tears flowing, he cries out: ‘Why are these three no longer burning? Is there
not something we can do to make a difference? ’

Says the fourth candle: ‘Don’t be afraid. While I am still burning we can re-light
the other candles and chase away the darkness. You see, I am the candle of
HOPE!’

We open the Pesach Seder with the child asking ‘Ma Nishtana’ –What is different
with the Jewish People that has enabled us to continue with our Seder of history.
The answer, delivered by affirmative Jewish action, is loud and clear: Despite the
severity of the challenge we have HOPE that LOVE will overcome hate; that the
genuine pursuit of PEACE will restore our FAITH in the basic goodness of all
people.

I know it sounds like wishful thinking but as springtime does always follow the
darkest of winters, as long as there is HOPE, we know that the other lights will
eventually shine through the darkness.

Pesach restores that Hope in a better future. We have Maror tempered with
sweet Charoset; Matza, the symbol of slavery broken into pieces; wine, the
symbol of joy and celebration, repeated again and again; and the famous
phrase—LeShana Ha’Ba B’Yerushalayim, in the dark winter of Jewish History , a
mere HOPE given lip service, transformed especially this year, into a worldwide
declaration of affirmation restoring our FAITH that LOVE in pursuit of PEACE will
take hold in Jerusalem setting the tone for all of humankind.

Are we not BETH TIKVAH..the House of HOPE… With our collective efforts, we
can kindle anew and as well strengthen existing sources of Jewish light and
enlightenment. And so, live each day with a ’shtikel’ Pesach, a resolute attitude
of hope and trust in our ability to make a difference for good.

Use Pesach and the Seder experience to strengthen the resolve that Am Yisrael
Chai VeKayom -- all because of me and my family and our HOPES for a
meaningful future. My HOPE—Join the CBT MeTo movement for a Jewish
future! That is the TIKVAH way!

Charlotte and I and our extended family wish each of you and your families a
Chag Kasher VeSameach.

6 Adar–Nisan-Iyar 5778

As I near the end of my 2-year mandate as President, the
experience I had was not less than incredible. The people I
met, the friendships I made and the personal feeling of
accomplishment I experienced are priceless. I can honestly
say I feel more connected to CBTASNH than I ever have in
the 35 years I have been a member.

Looking back since assuming the Presidency after Marty
Levitt, who as well accomplished so much during his two
years, many things have happened. It all started from our
incredible board, recruited by our nominating committee led by VP Jamie Goren.
It is a strong and vibrant board with a mix of male and female members, and new
young aggressive thinkers.

I am confident that this new board, with the support of all volunteers, will pave the
way to a better future for all of us at CBTASNH. They have already started this
with the creation of the following, just to name a few:

- A revived and dynamic Hebrew Academy Afternoon School.
- The creation of a new membership committee that has been working

behind the scenes.
- A new social and marketing committee, that have already brought in

music and many guest speakers, for everyone’s enjoyment.
- A strong Finance Committee led by Willy Waks and Bill Hurwitz.
- A newly created HR committee consisting of 6 people including myself.
- A new young Adult committee to look at ways to engage this

demographic.
- The appointment of Viki Zerdok as Youth and Programming Director.

There will be much more as we continue on the path of the recommendations
made by the strategic planning committee. I am confident that with the leadership
of our dynamic Rabbi Fishman, we will flourish!

From our family to yours, we wish you a happy Pesach and wonderful Spring.

We have been very busy at Hebrew Academy! Jewish Book month
ended with an amazing visit from the Jewish Public Library
representative who brought in some rare books. It was interesting to
see an old megillah scroll and other old books. The Mechina
and Kitah Alef classes even had a chance to try their hands
at making their own
books which they
loved doing!

Ori and Eden taught the children a shakshuka dance and
then taught them how to make this famous Israeli dish.
Everyone loved chopping up the veggies and trying
shakshuka with bread. Delicious! Some even got to take some samples home. They have
also been learning about BeerSheva and other places in Israel, and then completing
interesting projects. Every class enjoys seeing Eden and Ori every week!
December was filled with Chanukah spirit. We participated in
a Chanukah Gift Drive for Ometz. For this wonderful mitzvah
the children brought in new toys and were able to allocate
their own gift to a child in need. They made that child a card
and even wrapped the gifts themselves. We had an amazing
Chanukah play led by our kitah Vav class, and each class had a
chance to entertain their families with songs and skits. We
followed our skit with a great party and of course some Chanukah food!

Kitah Hay students enjoyed two sessions of their Jewish Journey. Rabbi Fishman led
parents and students in parts 1 and 2 of our Jewish Lifecycle.

In January we celebrated Tu Bishvat with a Seder led by Ori &
Eden and we had a chance to taste many different fruits from
the trees. Some made grass head buddies!

We are looking forward to celebrating Kabbalat Shabbat on a Wednesday with our
Kittah Gimel and Daled classes.

YEHOSHUA FRIEDBERG Z”L

Twenty-five years ago, an IDF platoon soldier, a friend and a future
leader of the Jewish nation was taken from us, brutally murdered
by Islamic terrorists. Yehoshua was a young man who was engaged
to be married and would have certainly made a difference in this
world, had his life not been cut short.

Yehoshua Friedberg was born in Montreal and did just about everything right in his life.
Besides being a basketball legend, he excelled scholastically and was a proud and
observant Jew who always left an impression on anyone he spoke to.

Yehoshua was the embodiment of true Zionism. He left the comfort of a safe North
American city with a sizeable and influential Jewish community so that he could
contribute to the defense and development of the Jewish state. He continued his
education in an Institution of Jewish education (Yeshiva Machon Meir) and completed
his university degree in Economics to round out his education. He then enlisted in the
IDF, prepared to defend our Jewish state and its people, not because he had to, simply
because he was one of them.

Yehoshua had every reason to stay put in Montreal, but he was not one to run away
from responsibility and what was simply, the right thing to do.

In 1991, when Jews were leaving Israel due to the missiles that were being fired, THAT is
when Yehoshua made Aliyah and connected his fate with Israel.

Yehoshua was interviewed on Israeli TV and the host asked him why he made Aliyah.
Yehoshua stared back at the host with a look that said, “I don’t even understand your
question”. The host then changed the question and asked, ‘why would you make Aliyah
when Israel is being bombarded with missiles?’ Yehoshua, without missing a beat said,
‘when your house is burning, you don’t run away, you run towards your home and help
save it.’ This is who Yehoshua was.

Yehoshua was a modest and quiet type and was known as one of the best soldiers in his
unit and no job was too big for him due to his strong and modest traits. He was chosen
and was sent to IDF Officer training. On route he disappeared and a massive search
ensued. After a few days, they found Yehoshua…but he was lifeless. He was murdered
by terrorists and thrown off the side of the road. Thousands of people from all walks of
life came to pay their respects to Yehoshua.

On the 25th anniversary, Jason is remembered, honoured and remains loved by those
who knew him and with this memorial we introduce him to those who never had the
privilege. May his memory continue to be a source of inspiration to all. Tehai Nishmato
Baruch.

chemita paraissent totalement irrationnelles.
