The first permanent dwellers known in Scott County were the Picurie
Indians from the Taos area of New Mexico. They fled the Spanish rule and
drifted north into what is now Northern Scott County, Kansas. They built
their one story stone and adobe pueblo near the Beaver Creek. This
became known as El Cuartelejo.
Scott County was created by an
act of the legislature of 1873, and
named in honor of General
Winfield Scott, a hero in both the
War of 1812 and the Mexican War,
and commander-in-chief at the
beginning of the Civil War in 1861.
For several years Scott County
had no population except bands of
Indians, hide hunters, and a few nomadic stockmen.
In 1884, Maria DeGeer, a most unusual and progressive woman, came
from Chicago and chose to establish her temperance community in the
heart of what is now Scott County. She and three other men owned the
four quarters intersecting at the city center. Settlers were quick to follow
and the Town Company of Scott was organized and incorporated on
September 11, 1885.
The city flourished during the years
leading up to 1890, but was set back by
crop failures. By 1903, there were only
about 350 people living in Scott City.
Nevertheless, about 35 years later, Scott
City had grown to nearly 1,800 residents
and was viewed as a highly progressive
town in western Kansas.
In 1902, Scott City had one bank, five
lawyers, four general stores, a high school,
one physician, one drug store, one lumber
yard, an opera house, several churches,
two dray lines, both Missouri Pacific (MP) and Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe
(ATSF) railways with six passenger trains daily, four coal dealers, two
blacksmith shops and many more Main Street businesses.
Over 130 years ago, the first homesteaders came to Scott County. They
came in covered wagons, by horse or on foot. They were hardy,
broadminded visionaries who were tested many times through drought and
blizzard conditions. These individuals, who had stamina and faith, stayed
because they loved this prairie and passed that love to their descendants.
That same pioneer spirit is alive and well in Scott Citians today!

The schools of USD #466 strive for
excellence and achievement in education,
fine arts, athletics and all extra-curricular
activities. The faculty and staff in our district
aim to enrich the lives of each of the roughly
1000 students enrolled each year from pre-K
through 12th grade throughout the three
primary buildings. The Board of Education
and administration serving USD #466
ensure a safe and optimal learning
environment for all students through the
necessary preservation and renewal of our
citizen-owned facilities.
Parents, teachers and students
communicate through a fluid networking
system implemented across the district.
Technology is key, evidenced by the iPads
provided to students for academic use throughout their SCMS and
SCHS years. While our enrollment is rising and predicted to trend
higher, we have maintained an average class size of 20, with
optimum teacher-student interaction. The first-rate education
provided to students in Scott County schools is an invaluable asset
to our community. Students with special needs find security and
compassion in the Special Education faculty who help them excel.
Nearly 30% of our teachers graduated from SCHS, a statistic
far above average, further attesting to the notion that “homecoming”
can be permanent!

Scott Community High School (9th – 12th)
The large-scale (2005) renovation of the original SCHS
building demonstrates the support our local community
and businesses provide our school district.
A varied curriculum including not only the basic core
subjects, but also classes in technology, fine arts,
agricultural education and various other electives, offers
students a well-rounded, world-class education with a
multitude of various interests. Our teachers strive to
ensure that every student graduating from our district is
prepared for the next phase of life.
Regarding extra-curricular activities, SCHS now
competes at the 4A level in the Great West Activities
Conference (GWAC) after several years in KSHSAA 3A
classification. GO, BEAVERS!
Scott City Middle School (5th – 8th)
In addition to core curriculum, SCMS places students in a variety
of elective classes including art, music, technology, home
economics and others. Teachers at SCMS avidly embrace the
guidance of tween youth through this important phase of their
education. Instrumental music instruction begins at SCMS, as do
the activities of student council, quiz bowl and cheerleading.
School sponsored athletic activities also begin at the middle
school for 7th and 8th grade students. Girls may participate in
volleyball, cross country, basketball, and track, while boys are
offered football, cross country, wrestling, basketball, and track.
Scott City Elementary School (Pre K – 4th)
SCES offers a fundamental curriculum along with extra-
curricular classes including PE, art and music. The importance of
technology is evident even in the earliest grades through the use
of desktop computers, Kindles, and iPads.
A spacious playground is used by students throughout the day
during recess and after school hours. In addition to the regular
school day, SCES also offers SCORE, an after-school program
designed to provide a structured environment with homework
time, games, snacks and other activities.
SCES faculty aims to achieve the highest standards during
those critical early years in every child’s education.
