COACH’S COLUMN
What a difference a week made,
from our opening 3-0 loss against
the Newcastle Vikings to a 41-12 win
over the West Coast Trojans last time
out.
While those of you who were at
the Trojans game will agree it was
a significant improvement, we feel
there is still plenty more to come
and the coaching staff and players
have been working hard to get the
team nearer to where we want to be
over the last two weeks.
Today we welcome to John Charles
Stadium the Doncaster Mustangs,
who hold the same record of played
two, won one and lost one. After a heavy defeat in their first game of the season to the
Manchester Titans they came back and beat the Vikings last week.
This is the first time the Rams and Mustangs have faced off against one another for
a number of years, having been in different divisions or conferences, but the Rams
claimed the win last time we met. Both teams reached the play-offs last year and
Doncaster, like ourselves, will be eager to build on their last result to push for a return to
the post-season.
With a decent weather forecast for today both teams will be hoping to bring their A
game. With your support, we aim to continue where we left off in the last game by
bringing a hard-hitting defence and a free-flowing offence to the field as we aim to go to
2-1 on the season and keep the pressure on Manchester at the top of the table.

He may be in his mid-forties but Whybrow is still at the top of his game, whether it’s

at training sessions, he is instrumental as a long-time
member of the Rams and the most experienced player.

going from strength-to-strength, Whybrow has a positive
effect on any side he is involved with and this could
definitely be seen when he was brought back into the

American football’s renaissance in the UK is going from strength
to strength – and increasingly, the game is proving popular with
women as well as men.
The Sapphire Series is going from strength to strength but with
only a short season available, Carnegie Chargers quarterback Lil
Bush became the latest player to seek further opportunities by
branching out into the men’s game.
Above: Lil playing for the Carnegie Chargers
Having joined the Rams roster this season, Lil took her first competitive snaps in our 41-
12 win over the West Coast Trojans last time out here at John Charles Stadium and led a
second-half scoring drive capped off by Keimar Stuart’s touchdown run.
“I came in as a real novice with not a lot of confidence in comparison to how I am in the
women’s league,” she says. “I could barely hold the football, because it’s loads bigger!”
“Now I’m at the stage where I feel settled, I feel I’m respected within the team, I’m pals
with the guys and I’m really happy with how it’s going. I’m loving it, the guys have been
absolutely great.”
And she is in no doubt how much her experience in black and gold, working in a
quarterback group also featuring American import Taylor Umland and the big-armed Dan
Haywood, has helped her development as a player.
“I think a lot of people have actually noticed this and it’s definitely from working with the
guys - and especially Taylor,” she says. “Taylor’s a big part of it - I won’t say it him too much
because he’s already really egotistical and I don’t want to make him feel that way any
more! I think I’ve definitely improved a lot over the last three, four months that I’ve been
working with the Rams. Even watching the game film over the Sapphire Series, I think you
can tell that I’ve supplemented my Sapphire with Britball.”
And there is plenty of time in which to do so, with the women’s season concentrated into a
frustratingly short stretch of time.
ELIZABETH ‘LIL’ BUSH
QUARTERBACK
SPOTLIGHT
“I think we spent four months just training, without any fixtures,” says Lil. “Then in eight
weekends, we play four of them and then we’re done for the season. We’re all sat on our
hands going ‘okay, there’s no more football’. You’ve got to pace yourself over that ridicu-
lous pre-season, so that you’re ready and intense for when the season starts but you don’t
blow everything out in that first game.
“It’s a real short, intense season and you’re playing two games in a day as well so, especial-
ly if you have a bad game personally or as a team, it means that you’ve got to bounce back
straight away – you don’t have another week’s training to fix it, you’ve got to get straight
back in there and do it.”
Lil is not the first woman to play in the BAFA National Leagues, and the trend is apparent
at university level as well – a recent BBC Three short, Zoe The Lady Linebacker, focused on
a player at Cardiff University and has been viewed almost 170,000 times on Facebook as
well as featuring on the BBC website. In the NFL, meanwhile, Jen Welter and Kathryn Smith
have worked in coaching positions with the Arizona Cardinals and Buffalo Bills respectively.
Welter is now coaching Australia’s women’s national team, who are heading to their first
World Championship in June. The Great Britain team are bidding to be there as well, with a
fundraising drive ongoing – check out https://www.gofundme.com/j8fq2-road-to-canada.
Lil says: “I didn’t know what to expect because there’s not another woman playing for the
team at the moment but I know there are women around in adult contact, even in our divi-
sion. The other QBs I’ve been working with, the coaches, they’ve been fantastic – it’s been
a great help for my own knowledge of football in general, and 11-a-side football as well.
“We play seven-a-side (in the Sapphire Series), the field is smaller, there’s no special teams,
and the games are two halves of 20 minutes. So it’s so different, but I think they’re differ-
ent in really good ways. Going from one to the other, you can appreciate the football in
both of them and also the differences you can exploit.”
If Offensive Coordinator Nathan Deeley calls on her this afternoon, look for number 19 to
put that into practice!

GAME REVIEW
The Rams will be looking today to build on the
momentum generated by a 41-12 win over the West
Coast Trojans last time out.
The Rams’ running back depth was on show at the
John Charles Stadium, with two touchdowns for
Keimar Stuart and one apiece from Chris Peel and
Amit Singh.
Above: QB Taylor Umland in action before the snap Wide receiver Christian Davies also found the end
zone while defensive back Tyler Broad added to his
personal highlight reel with a 100-yard interception
score.
An early 50-yard pick-up for Stuart banished memories of the Rams’ offensive struggles in
the season’s opening game against the Newcastle Vikings and set the team up in position
for Peel to score. Stuart then added another and though both conversion attempts failed,
the Rams had a healthy 12-0 lead.
West Coast pulled one back but Broad’s moment of magic made it 19-6 after the first
quarter and a long drive in the second set up a field goal to make it 22-6 at half-time.
Another Trojans score was cancelled out by Davies’ touchdown catch and Stuart, offensive
MVP on the day, added his second
touchdown before Singh made the most
of his only carry of the afternoon by
sauntering in for the Rams’ sixth score.
Broad and Chris Lawton finished with two
interceptions apiece, with Broad seeing
another cancelled out by a penalty flag.

With the season now well under way, keep up to date with how our rivals in NFC1 North
haved fared up to this point.
APRIL 23
DONCASTER MUSTANGS 0 - 41 MANCHESTER TITANS
It was a disappointing start to the season for today’s opponents as the Manchester Titans
got off to a flyer at Wheatley Hills.
After blocking a Mustangs field goal attempt and coming out on top of an early defensive
battle, the Titans took the lead when quarterback Sam Bloomfield hit Adam Bamber for the
first touchdown.
Luc Kinder’s touchdown and another from Bamber gave the visitors a 21-0 half-time lead
and Bloomfield threw a fourth TD early in the second half to James Newnes.
Running scores from Joe Nicholson and Ian Harrison finished the job while the Titans’
defence ended up with four interceptions.
MAY 7
DONCASTER MUSTANGS 12 - 7 NEWCASTLE VIKINGS
The Mustangs bounced back with a hard-fought win over a Vikings side who have shown
their defensive capabilities right here at John Charles Stadium already this season.
Trailing 7-0 after a sneak from Vikings quarterback Nick Whitehead on fourth-and-one
turned into an improbable 30-yard touchdown run, Doncaster were prevented from
punching the ball in from the two-yard line as the first half reached its end.
They got on the scoresheet early in the third quarter with a short touchdown catch by Joe
Powell, but still trailed after failing with a two-point conversion.
The decisive score, though, came when quarterback Sam Foulds kept the ball and rolled
out to the right sideline and into the corner of the end zone, with another failed two-point
conversion proving immaterial as the Mustangs’ defence forced a fumble to ice the game.
MANCHESTER TITANS 1 - 0 WEST COAST TROJANS (WALKOVER)
Sadly, last week’s other scheduled game was cancelled as a shortage of players forced the
Trojans to forfeit on the morning of the match.
The Titans’ under-19 team went ahead with their scheduled fixture, beating the
Merseyside Nighthawks 48-0.
WHITE ROSE
Keep an eye out on the Rams’ sideline in between the on-
field action today and you will see one of the new additions
to the gameday experience this season with our performers
from the White Rose Cheer team.
The group have been brought into the fold by Helena
Kontowtt, a key behind-the-scenes figure in the Rams set-up
as well as a performer and coach with White Rose, and we
asked her to give us some background on them.
“It started as a schools programme in local schools, it’ll be two years in September, and gradually
built up into the programme that it is now,” she said.
“We’ve got 150-ish athletes across a whole range of ages, right from ‘tinies’ which are as young as
three, all the way up to adult. We go from kids who’ve started a few weeks ago to adults who’ve
been doing it since they were little.
“Our coaches have coached and competed at Worlds, we’ve got a group of 10 coaches now all
coaching different programmes and tumble classes. We’ve got four days a week in the gym and
masses of teams.
“In the team that comes down to the games, the youngest is about seven, right up to the junior age
group - we might get the odd senior or adult coming down but mostly between seven and about
14.”
Regarding her own involvement, she continued: “I started when I was at Bradford University so I’ve
been cheerleading for coming up to six years now.
“I got into coaching last year when I joined White Rose Cheer and I coach a mini prep team, a youth
level one team and two stunt teams.
“My two full cheer teams do a two-and-a-half-minute routine every time they go to competition, my
stunt teams do a one-and-a-half-minute routine that is purely stunting.
“My stunt groups both came first at their first competition this season, and they came fourth and
fifth in the second competition – I’m currently starting to prepare them for their final comp in July.
CHEER
“The last competition was a national competition,
the first one was a regional. And the next one we’re
competing in Blackpool at a Nationals competition.”
Further success came with a first-placed finish for
Helena’s team in the first youth level one competition
of the season, while the mini prep team also opened
with a top-five finish.
Helena will not be directly involved with the cheer
team today but you will still find her on the sideline,
assisting offensive co-ordinator Nathan Deeley by
tracking the team’s play-by-play statistics.
She is also a regular at our training sessions, helping Above: Half time performance at our opening game of the
to coach the offensive line where her partner Ian season against the Newcastle Vikings
Lodge can be found at guard.
And let us not forget Helena’s most welcome contribution of all – away games would not be the
same without her home-made cakes and chocolate brownies!

ASAP YORKSHIRE RAMS 0 - 20 BIRMINGHAM BULLS
The Rams struggled to get anything going on offence in this encounter with the
Birmingham Bulls, only amassing a total of 13 rushing yards in the entire game and being
forced to punt 8 times.
A strong defensive display by the Bulls was almost mirrored by the Rams kept the away
side to 6 points in the first half, this would only change on a Rams offensive mistake when
Quarterback Alex Fisher threw an interception to Brendan Cunnane who took it back for
the score. The 2-point conversion was successful leaving the home side trailing 14-0.
Bulls QB Stuart Ennis would then connect with Dave Winter on a 28 yard passing play to
put the game to bed in the 4th quarter.
