In recent years, there has been a lot of crime in Malaysia. Sadly, these crimes are becoming more violent. The rise of crimes in Malaysia is a serious concern. From this e-bulletin, you can know a few famous and crucial crimes that you can visit without doing any research. ANTHONY KEVIN MORAIS MURDER CASE Anthony Kevin Morais was the Deputy Head of the Trial and Appeal Division from the Attorney General’s Department and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC). He was reported missing on 4 September 2015 and was believed to have been kidnapped before being killed. The official motive for Kevin Morais’ murder is believed to be revenge following Kevin Morais leading the investigation into a corruption case involving a 52-year-old doctor, R. Kunaseegaran, who is the primary suspect. The police have denied any connection between Kevin Morais’ murder and the investigation into the 1MDB company (1Malaysia Development Berhad). Kevin's younger brother, Charles Suresh Morais, alleges that his brother may have been murdered because he had knowledge about individuals in power. Charles made this claim through a sworn affidavit (SD) that he signed during a dispute over the deceased's body. He has filed a court application seeking permission for a second autopsy, even though he now believes that Kevin's body may have been cremated. Kevin Morais was reportedly kidnapped approximately one kilometer from his home on Jalan Dutamas Raya. On September 4, 2015, the day of the incident, as Kevin was on his way to the Attorney-General’s Chambers in Putrajaya, four kidnappers who later turned into murderers intentionally caused a road accident. Kevin unaware of any suspicion, Kevin exited his car to inspect its condition, which ultimately leading to his abduction. The incident occurred during peak traffic hours and was witnessed by the public stuck in the traffic jam. Three individuals were involved in forcing Kevin into a Mitsubishi Triton pickup truck, while another drove the victim’s car. Police sources indicated that the murder of Kevin Morais had been carefully planned by the perpetrators. His youngest brother filed a missing person’s report the next day. Earlier, a car matching the model he owned was found in a palm oil plantation in Perak. His body was discovered in a concrete-filled drum at USJ 1, Subang Jaya, Selangor, on September 16, 2015. On November 20, 2017, six individuals were accused of the murder and it is R. Dinishwaran, K Thinesh Kumar, M. Vishwanath, S. Nimalan, S. Ravichandran(the person who accidentally destroyed the evidence) and R. Kunaseegaran. Not long after, they were sentenced to death by hanging. Canny Ong, born on July 18, 1974, in Ipoh, Perak, Malaysia, was a 23-year-old Malaysian IT analyst working in San Diego, California, United States. Here's a chronological summary of the events involving Canny Ong according to Jane (2022): June 1: Canny Ong and her husband, Brandon Ong, return to Malaysia to visit her ailing father. June 13: On the day before they were set to leave for home, Canny, along with several family members and close friends, had dinner at Restoran Monde, Kompleks Beli-Belah Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur. Canny is with her mother and sister at 11 p.m. Parking Lot Incident: Canny leaves behind the parking ticket in a car and returns to the basement parking lot to retrieve it. Disappearance: While Canny goes to the car to retrieve the parking ticket, her mother and sister wait at the Autopay machine. After waiting for 20 minutes, Canny's mother becomes worried as Canny hasn't returned. Canny's mother and sister try calling her, but there's no response. Search Begins: Canny's mother and sister go down to the parking lot to look for her. Upon reaching the parking lot, they find that Canny and the car are missing. Anxious and alarmed, they rush to the guard post and review the CCTV footage. Abduction: The footage reveals that a man approached Canny while she was on her way to retrieve the parking ticket, forcibly pushed her into the car, and drove away. Report to Police: Canny's family members immediately go to the police station to file a report about her abduction. THE ASSASSINATION OF CANNY ONG Figure 6 : (Canny Ong, 2019) Figure 8 : (Canny Ong & Brandon Ong, 2019) Figure 7 : (CCTV Footage, 2019)

The day after the incident, the police discovered a car suspected to belong to Canny behind a shophouse lot in Petaling Jaya. Upon investigation, the back seat of the car contained traces of blood and emitted a foul odor, and a parking ticket was found inside. Three days later, during the investigation, the police found a charred body in a pit at Jalan Batu 7, Klang Lama. The body was discovered in a condition where both hands were tied with a piece of cloth, covered with two old tires. Experts determined the cause of death as strangulation or suffocation in the stomach area. There were also severe injuries to the stomach and two stab wounds on the victim's body. DNA analysis confirmed that the deceased was Canny. On June 20, 2003, the police tracked down the main suspect in the case, a man named Ahmad Najib, and also raided and arrested him at his home. As a result of the raid, the police found several pieces of evidence. Among them, the suspect's shirt and pants had blood stains. A DNA test of the blood on his shirt and pants found that it matched Canny’s DNA. After investigating, the official motive for Canny Ong’s murder is did not occur in the element of revenge but in love. Later, Ahmad Najib was found guilty of rape and murder. The High Court had sentenced the suspect to hang while all appeals were not accepted, and the court upheld the death sentence on the basis of strong evidence. Among them were blood stains on clothes, the discovery of condoms used by the suspect at the scene, and others.

Kim Jong Nam (born 10 May 1971, Pyongyang, North Korea) was a North Korean citizen and a former member of the Korean Labor Party, likely expelled after 2001. Kim had a family but he also had a mistress, former Air Koryo flight attendant So Yong-la, who lived in Macau. He died due to an assassination. Kim died on 13 February 2017 after being attacked by two women using the nerve agent VX at Kuala Lumpur International Airport in Malaysia on the way back to Macau. VX gas, with the chemical name O-ethylS-[2(diisopropylamino)ethyl] methylphosphonothiolate, is one of the deadliest chemical warfare agents. The investigation into Kim Jong-nam's killing strongly suggests North Korean government involvement. North Korea is suspected of possessing the world's third-largest VX stockpile after the United States and Russia. Malaysian police reported that Kim informed a receptionist about an attack where someone had approached him from behind and splashed liquid on his face. A woman covered his face with a cloth soaked in liquid. Kim died during his transfer from the airport to Putrajaya Hospital. KIM JONG NAM’S ASSASSINATION Figure 12 : (Kim Jong Nam, 2019) Figure 11 : (Kim Jong Nam, 2019)

On February 14, a 28-year-old Vietnamese woman named Doan Thi Huong was arrested at Kuala Lumpur International Airport in connection with the attack, identified through CCTV footage. Two days later, on February 16, a 25-year-old Indonesian woman named Siti Aisyah was arrested as the second female suspect. Huong told the police that she had been instructed by four men accompanying her to spray Kim with an unknown liquid, while Aisyah, unaware of the substance's toxicity, held back, thinking it was a harmless prank being filmed from a distance(Kramer, 2023). Doan Thi Huong, accused of the murder of Kim Jong-Nam, escaped the death penalty when prosecutors changed her charge to intentionally causing injury with a dangerous weapon instead of murder and she pleaded guilty(Kramer, 2023). On March 11, the first accused in the murder case, Siti Aisyah, was released after charges were withdrawn following an appeal from the Indonesian government(Kramer, 2023). According to their lawyers, Huong was recruited in December 2016, and Aisyah in January 2017, both by Malaysian Scouts working for North Korea(Kramer, 2023). The women were handled by a separate team of North Korean men, who posed as Japanese and Chinese, with one of the recruiters being Ri Ji-u. The High Court in Malaysia did not rule out the possibility of political motives in the killing of North Korean Kim Jong-nam in February 2017. Judge Datuk Azmi Ariffin stated that there was no clear evidence from the prosecution regarding the true motive behind the incident. Sosilawati Lawiya, also known as Datuk Sosilawati, was a 47-year-old cosmetic seller in Malaysia. She operated a business called Nouvelle Beauty Centre Sdn. Bhd. .The case began when news of Datuk Sosilawati's disappearance and subsequent death started circulating on Twitter. Sosilawati and three others, including her driver (Kamaruddin Shamsuddin), a friend (Noohisham Mohamed), and a personal lawyer (Ahmad Kamil Abdul Karim), were reported missing since August 30th. At that time, Sosilawati had mentioned the need to bring RM4 million to Banting, Selangor, to meet a lawyer for a land purchase in Penang worth 1.4 million. The police initially classified this as a missing persons case since there were no claims of missing money. On September 6, 2010, Sosilawati's BMW X5 with license plate WTL 11 was discovered in a parking lot at the Angsana USJ1 Subang Jaya Apartment. Her lawyer's BMW 5 series was found in a residential area overlooking the Grand Dorsett Hotel in Subang Jaya. Forensic police from Kuala Lumpur Contingent Police Headquarters (IPK) identified fingerprints and DNA evidence on the vehicles. Inspector General of Police, Tan Sri Musa Hassan, reiterated that phone calls and SMS messages were being investigated. Kuala Lumpur Police Chief Datuk Muhammad Osman stated that they had taken testimony from Sosilawati's husband as part of their investigation. SOSILAWATI LAWIYA MURDER CASE Figure 16 : (The Victims, 2022)

The victims were initially beaten with cricket sticks and other blunt weapons before their hands were tied using wire. The victim was stabbed with a sharp weapon by a group of criminals to death covered in blood. Some of the alleged victims were slashed before being burned. Then, their bodies are smeared with cow dung. Gasoline was poured before burning the bodies of the victims to the ashes to remove evidence of crime at the suspect's oil palm plantation based on the initial evidence located at Sungai Gadong, Tanjung Sepat. Before burning, the victim is wrapped in zinc. The criminals then collected pieces and ashes of the bodies of all the victims who were put in certain sacks or containers before being dumped into the Sungai Panchau. In this case, all the suspect were arrested on 11 September 2011, there are 9 people was arrested by police. First, Pathamanaban is a 41- year-old lawyer who is widely known in the Banting. Then, Surendran is his younger brother, as well as two women and four others including their farm workers. There is some evidence found by forensics at Sungai Panchau, Kampung Kanchong Laut such as pieces of limb tissue, including hair in addition to human charred bones believed to belong to the missing victim. At the end of the case, all the suspects were accused of death after being found guilty of murdering four people on 23 May 2013 and the case was closed. In his judgement, High Court Judge Datuk Akhtar Tahir concluded that land matters figured as the key motive in the murder of Sosilawati for the reason of Pathmanabhan'sinability to honour the cheque issued to Sosilawati.

Nurin Jazlin Bin Jazimin was an eight-year-old Malaysian murder victim. He was born on 11 September 1999. She was murdered on 16 September 2007 in Kuala Lumpur. This case started when she had gone to a night market near her house in Section 1, Wangsa Maju, Kuala Lumpur to buy a hair clip on the night of 16 August 2007. Her parents filed a missing person report to the police and a search for her was undertaken subsequently. Police were able to find CCTV footage, from a nearby camera that showed her being dragged into a white van the night she went missing. On the morning of 17 September 2007, a brand new gym bag was left in front of a shop lot in PJS 1/48, Petaling Jaya discovered by the shop owner. It contained an unidentified child’s naked body which had been stuffed in fetal position. Police believed that she had been dead for more than six hours. A cucumber and brinjal were found stuffed inside her genitals and had caused her rectum to rupture. It was determined that bacterial infection had contributed to her death. NURIN JAZLIN HOMICIDE CASE Figure 19 : (Nurin Jazlin, 2019) Figure 20 : (CCTV Footage and the Gym Bag, 2022)

On 28 September, federal agents raided a shop in Section 7, Shah Alam where they arrested four men and one woman between the ages of 27 and 35 in connection with the murder. The woman was released after questioning, while the men were remanded to police custody for seven days. However, they were released unconditionally three days later. Police then proceeded to put up an award of RM10,000 for information leading to Nurin’s killer. An anonymous private businessman agreed to match that with an additional RM10,000.On 2 October, police arrested an Indonesian woman at a market in Nilai, Negeri Sembilan. When confronted, the woman attempted to swallow a SIM card she was carrying. On 11 October, police released video footage captured by a CCTV camera near a shoplot in Petaling Utama, Petaling Jaya where the sports bag contained Nurin’s body. The CCTV footage was sent on 26 September to the FBI to enhance the clarity of the blurred images. The first clip, captured at about 1 PM on September 16, showed a motorcyclist carrying a sports bag with Nurin’s body in it and leaving it at shoplot. The second clip which was recorded one hour later showed a woman loitering around the shoplot who was later picked up by three men arriving at the scene. The enhanced footage, however, failed to reveal the face and license plate of the motorcycle. Her murder has not yet been solved. In 2018, Nurin’s father pleaded with the police to reopen his daughter’s case and investigate it using the latest technology.
