Friends,

It has been a wild and crazy spring and summer. We have lost a number of employees to the VSSP, and we
have lost a few to other job opportunities, family moves, and the like. We have also added a few faces, but for
the most part, we have shifted work, combined duties, or consolidated jobs to save money and to meet the
demands of our fall enrollment. Some of the changes you will see in the very near future are:

Evening Office
Michael Varnell, Department Chair for Engineering Technology, will assume responsibilities for the Evening
Office. Mr. James Hall will be working part-time with Mike during the fall term as we make this transition.

Instructional Services
Shawn Silman assumed the role of Dean of Liberal Arts and left the physical education department without a
chair. We decided to consolidate Math and Physical Education departments. Jan Wilson will serve as chair of
the Department of Math and Physical Education, and Kory Koehler will serve as Lead Faculty.

As a result of VSSP or retirement, we have also lost several office personnel. Among those who will leave by
August 31 are: Dorothy McGraw, Aliece Mobley, Kaye Caley, and Patsy Hinson. Rather than replacing these
colleagues, we have reallocated responsibilities within instructional divisions. All administrative assistants have
assumed responsibilities for additional programs. Those assignments are listed in the chart that appears at the
end of this message. Cassie Reid will serve as the Administrative Assistant to Dean of Liberal Arts, and she will
also manage some of the administrative services for the Fine Arts/Communication Department as well as paper
work for the Evening Office. Dedra White is leaving the Call Center to assume the position that Cassie Reid has
vacated.

Student Success (CASA)
Supervision of Erika Hernandez and the Student Success Center will be transition to Jan Crenshaw, Director of
the Library.

President’s Office
Sandra Poston’s duties will be assumed by existing staff as well as part-time student help.

San Jac Café
The San Jac Café has lost two banquet chefs and a cashier, and as a cost savings, only one chef will be hired to
replace the two. The cashier is being replaced as a part-time employee.

Athletics
Tom Arrington will serve as Athletic Director.

Faculty
We have lost a number of faculty this summer, be we are adding some as well. We had already begun searches
for a couple of positions when the VSSP became an option. In HITT, we have hired Carla Ruffins, and we are
currently concluding a search for a Medical Assisting faculty.

We have had the good fortune to hire some temporary full-time faculty to serve in positions left vacant by
VSSP departures. We want to fill the positions permanently, but because of timing, this year we opted to fill the
positions immediately with temporary faculty. We are adding Olga Nava (from Upward Bound to Spanish

teacher), René Léija (College Prep Math), Ruth Elrod (HITT), and Stephan Lorenz (Biology). We are still
looking for another College Prep Math faculty.
