Martin Luther King JR

Martin Luther King Jr played an
instrumental role in the civil rights
movement. In 1955 he served as the
spokesperson of the montgomery bus
boycott which would lead to the
desegregation of montgomery buses.
Another major accomplishment MLK
achieved was the creation of the southern
christian leadership conference. He also
organized the march on washington where
he gave his famous “I have a Dream”
speech.

Student Nonviolent Coordinating committee
(SNCC)

SNCC was an important organization during the civil rights movement and its
chairman was John Lewis. It was formed in south carolina and members were
mostly highschool to college aged students. SNCC organized many peaceful,
non-violent protest and became known for their sit-ins, and freedom rides. The
group was also at the forefront of the Albany movement.

Southern Christian Leadership Conference
(SLCL)

SLCL was created in response from the success of the montgomery bus
boycott.The SLCL was led by MLK and planned rallies, marches, and boycotts
during the civil rights era. Today the organization focuses on issues such as
health care, prison reforms, fair treatment of refugees, and job site safety.

Brown vs board of education

Brown v Board of education was a major
court case in the civil rights era. Brown v
Board of education was a major court
case on the integration of schools and it
directly challenged segregation laws. The
decision of the supreme court case was
that segregation was unconstitutional and
the integration of public schools must be
allowed.

Albany Movement

The Albany movement was started due to the success of the Montgomery Bus
boycott. The Albany movement was started to challenge segregation laws in the
city of Albany. The Albany movement was considered unsuccessful due to many
protestors being jailed and their not being enough people to protest due to
everyone being imprisoned.

The March on Washington

The march on washington
took place in 1963 where
many civil rights activist
gathered to promote their
cause. The march on
washington advocated for
jobs and freedom and is also
where Martin Luther King Jr
gave his famous “I have a
dream” speech. The march on
washington helped in creating
the civil rights act of 1964 and
the voting rights act of 1965.

1964 Civil Rights Act

The 1964 Civil Rights act
was passed through
congress and didn’t allow for
discrimination on the basis
of sex and race in hiring,
promoting, and firing. The
1964 civil rights act was met
with some resistance from
people such as Lester
Maddox.

Lester Maddox

In response to the passage of the 1964 civil
rights act Lester Maddox open the PickRick
cafeteria outside Georgia tech. However this
restaurant would only serve to white customers
denying service to black customers. Eventually
Lester Maddox entered politics and became
mayor of Atlanta. However he surprised many
by appointing more African-Americans and
blacks to government position than all prior
mayors combined.

The sibley commission

When the supreme court case of brown v board of education was announced it
was not received well in Georgia. Many people in Georgia tried to resist the
decision. The sibley commission was a done to see the overall opinion of the
citizens of georgia on the integration of public schools. The finding were that 60%
of the population would rather have public schools closed and shut down than
integrate.

The Georgia Flag of 1956

After the Brown vs Board of education, it was deemed unconstitutional to
segregate public schools. However there was backlash towards the decision from
Georgia, this caused Georgia to try and resist the decision. This caused Georgia to
change its flag to include parts of the the confederate flag from the civil war.

Ivan Allen Jr

Ivan Allen Jr was mayor of atlanta during the civil rights movement and continued william B.
Hartfield idea of atlanta being “the city too busy to hate”. He was as big of advocate of civil
rights as William Hartsfield was. He would also eventually bring major sports teams to
Atlanta such as the braves, the falcons, as well as the hawks.

Jimmy Carter

Jimmy Carter served as a State senator, a
governor, and the only Georgian to become
president. He had a successful career as
governor and senator appointing more
minorities to government positions. As he was
elected president he had failures such as the
Iranian Hostage Crisis, and successes such as
creating the camp David accords between
Israel and Egypt. After presidency he founded
the carter center which has monitored
elections, treated world diseases, etc. This
would eventually lead Jimmy Carter to earning
the Nobel peace prize.

Maynard Jackson

Maynard Jackson won the position of
mayor in 1973 due to winning 60% of the
votes. With this election Maynard
Jackson became the first
African-American mayor of Atlanta. In
office Jackson added the international
terminal to the Hartsfield national airport.
To improve Race equality he hired more
black officers as well as giving black
business owners more contract work.

Andrew Young Andrew Young served in
Georgia as a congressman, U.N
ambassador and as mayor of
Atlanta. Andrew Young was the
first African-American
congressman since
reconstruction in 1972. He was
also instrumental in bringing
the 1996 Olympic games to
Atlanta, which improved the
economy and

The 1996 Olympics

In the 1990 it was announced that the 1996 Olympic games would be held in
Atlanta and after the announcement, Atlanta began to prepare for the international
event. In order to be ready the city built new or added to existing sports venues,
they repaired sidewalks, built public parks, created more hotel rooms as well as
revitalize the downtown area with new homes and apartments. A long term effect
of the Olympics was the population growth of 3.5 million in 1996 to 5.5 million in
2011.
