Picture 6.1
Look at the picture above. There is a kid telling his story in front of the
classroom. It is about his experience. What kind of tense should he use? Simple
past tense or present perfect tense?
In this chapter, you will learn simple past tense, present perfect tense, and other
things related to it. Study all the materials and do the activities attentively.
A. Grammar Review
The prior step of this chapter is to understand the difference between the
simple past and the present perfect. English learners often confuse these two
verb tenses. Let’s start with an example. Can you tell the difference between
these two sentences?
Sentence one: I saw the movie.
Sentence two: I have seen the movie.
Sentence one uses the simple past tense. Sentence two uses the present perfect
tense.
English for Grade X – The First Semester 2021/2022
SMK Negeri 6 Jember
Tense Definition
Simple Past Tense The basic form of the past tense in English. It is used
to describe events that finished at a specific time in
Present Perfect Tense the past.
A grammatical combination of the present tense and
the perfect aspect, used to express a past event that
has present consequences.
“I saw the movie” and “I have seen the movie” both refer to an action that was
finished in the past. But there is one important difference: “I saw the movie”
suggests that you saw the movie at a specific time in the past. “I have seen the
movie” suggests that you saw the movie at an unknown time in the past.
B. Simple Past Tense (Formula, Usage, Examples)
Simple past tense is used to express the actions that happened in the past or
happened one after the other. Use the simple past to talk about a finished action
that happened at a specific time. For example, “I went out with my friends last
night.” The adverb “last night” is not required, but it does help clarify that the
event happened at a specific time.

in past.
C. Present Perfect Tense (Examples, Exercise and Usage)
Present perfect tense expresses the completion of the action or task of the
present. You form the present perfect by using “have” or “has” followed by the
past participle form of the verb. For example, “I have graduated from college.”
The present perfect confuses English learners because it refers to a past action.
It is also called “present perfect” because speakers use it to stress the
importance of a past event in the present. The sentence “I have graduated from
college,” emphasizes the present effect of a past event -- graduation. The exact
time of the graduation is not important.

Learning Materials:
Picture 7.1
Look at the picture above. Do you recognize what event is it? What was it about?
When did it happen? Do you familiar with the proclamation on the picture?
In this chapter, you will learn recount text, and other things related to it. Study
all the materials and do the activities attentively.
A. Definition of Recount Text
A recount text is a text which tells about something that happened in the past.
The details in a recount can include what happened, who was involved, where it
took place, when it happened and why it occurred. Its purpose or goal is to
entertain or inform about the past activity to the reader or listener
Recount text can be factual information, such as a news story or procedural
information, such as telling someone how you built something or personal
information, such as a family holiday or your opinion on a subject.
B. Purpose
The purpose of this style of writing is to recall an event or experience for the
reader's information or enjoyment. It differs from a narrative in that the events
are portrayed in chronological order - in the order in which they occurred rather
than manipulated for maximum impact or drama.
Writers should remember that while the purpose is to retell they still need to
craft their retelling to be interesting to the reader. Rather than retelling every
minor detail, the writer needs to select the important information or events, and
expand on these in an interesting manner. If you were recounting a sports day,
English for Grade X – The First Semester 2021/2022
SMK Negeri 6 Jember
you could focus on the place, time, events and results (which may be appropriate
for a report), but to interest the reader think about what would lift this above the
dreary detail - What was the highlight of the day for you? How did you feel
when you tripped just before the finish line? Did anything funny or surprising
occur?
C. Types of Recount
• Personal recount
These usually retell an event that the writer was personally involved in.
• Factual recount
Recording an incident, eg. a science experiment, police report.
• Imaginative recount
Writing an imaginary role and giving details of events, eg. A day in the life
of a pirate; How I invented...
D. Language Features
Picture 7.2
1. Introducing personal participant; I, we, my group, etc.
2. Using chronological connection; then, first, after that, next, later, when, then,
after, before, first, at the same time, as soon as she left, late on Friday).
3. Using linking verb; was, were, saw, heard, etc.
4. Using action verb; buy, go, speak, etc.
5. Using simple past tense (she yelled, it nipped, she walked).
6. Using features such as dialogue and description to embellish the retelling.
English for Grade X – The First Semester 2021/2022
SMK Negeri 6 Jember
7. Using personal pronouns (I, we) (Personal Recount).
8. The passive voice may be used, eg. the bottle was filled with ink (Factual
Recount).
E. Structure
• The recount has a title, which usually summarizes the text
• Specific participants (Sister, the crab)
• The basic recount consists of three parts:
1. Orientation - It is about introduction the participants, place and time. It
tells who was involved, what happened, where the events took place, and
when it happened.
2. Events - Describing series of event that happened in the past. Telling
what happened and in what sequence.
3. Reorientation - It is optional. It consists of closure of events/ending. It
is stating personal comment of the writer to the story• Details are
selected to help the reader reconstruct the activity or incident (Factual
Recount)
• The ending may describe the outcome of the activity, eg. in a science activity
(Factual Recount)
• Details of time, place and incident need to be clearly stated, eg. At 11.15 pm,
between Reid Rd and Havelock St a man drove at 140 kms toward the shopping
center (Factual Recount)
• Descriptive details may also be required to provide information, eg. He was a
skinny boy with a blue shirt, red sneakers and long tied back hair (Factual
Recount)
• Includes personal thoughts/reactions (Imaginative Recount)
Example:
A Trip to the National Zoo and Aquarium
Yesterday, my family and I went to the National Zoo and Aquarium to
visit the new Snow Cubs and the other animals.
In the morning, when we got to the Zoo and Aquarium there was a great
big line, so we had to wait awhile to get in.
English for Grade X – The First Semester 2021/2022
SMK Negeri 6 Jember
After we entered the zoo, we went straight to the enclosure for the Snow
Cubs. My brother and I were so excited to see them. They were so cute and
playful.
At lunchtime Dad decided to cook a barbeque. He cooked sausages so we
could have sausage sandwiches. Mum forgot the tomato sauce so we had to eat
them plain.
In the afternoon, we visited the aquarium. My brother was excited to see
the sharks and the tropical fish.
At the end of the day when we left we were going to go and get ice
cream but we decided we were too tired so we drove straight home.
Task 23:
Visiting My Village
Last month, I and my family went to Banyumas which was located in
Central Java, Indonesia. We drove a car. I enjoyed the journey all day long
although it took 2 days to get there. We were fun, my brother made some jokes
all day. My father told us some stories on the way. My mother slept in the back
seat.
My first day in my village, I visited my siblings and friends. We are
welcomed with happiness. When I saw my parents, they cried because they
looked so happy to meet up their families. The next day, I, my brother, my
cousin and my nephew went to a popular place in Purwokerto. It was called
“Baturaden”. That was a favorite spot in Purwokerto. We enjoyed local specialty
food as a culinary. I was satisfied and so were they. Next, I took a photo with
traditional music musicians.
My brother, my cousin and my nephew enjoy the view of other visitors.
They took a photo with their style as I did. In the evening, we were back home.
And did other private activities, such as made a conversation, told the story and
made a joke.
The day after tomorrow, my cousin had a ceremony to say thanks to God
for blessing their son. It was called “Nazar”. When the parents had a promise for
something and it was realized. They had to make a traditional ceremony. I
watched that traditional ceremony and took their photograph.
English for Grade X – The First Semester 2021/2022
SMK Negeri 6 Jember
For the last show, we were entertained by “Ebeg”. It was traditional art.
The player danced through traditional music and they were handled by the spirit.
It was scary, but it was fun and entertaining.
Time run so fast because the next day was our last day in the village. So
I took the last photo to bring it home. They were my family and still family until
the last breath in this world.
Finally, we had to go home and brought a love experience from family.
Yaps… that was the hardest part.

July 2016, I went to West Tokyo by plane. It was my first journey to
Japan. I took a trip to Mount Fuji. I stayed at Sakura’s house. She is my friend in
Japan. We were a classmate at Senior High School. Sakura’s house has a big
garden with lots of green flowers and beautiful sand. It was so perfect element

Kecak Dance
English for Grade X – The First Semester 2021/2022
SMK Negeri 6 Jember
Kecak (pronounced [ketjak]) is a form of Balinese music drama,
originated in the 1930s and is performed primarily by men. Also known as the
Ramayana Monkey Chant, the piece, performed by a circle of 100 or more
performers wearing checked cloth around their waists, percussively chanting
"cak" and throwing up their arms, depicts a battle from the Ramayana where the
monkey-like Vanara helped Prince Rama fight the evil King Ravana. However,
Kecak has roots in sanghyang, a trance-inducing exorcism dance.
Kecak was originally a trance ritual accompanied by male chorus. German
painter and musician Walter Spies became deeply interested in the ritual while
living in Bali in the 1930s and worked to recreate it into a drama, based on the
Hindu Ramayana and including dance, intended to be presented to Western
tourist audiences. This transformation is an example of what James Clifford
describes as part of the "modern art-culture system" in which, "the West or the
central power adopts, transforms, and consumes non-Western or peripheral
cultural elements, while making 'art' which was once embedded in the culture as
a whole, into a separate entity. "Spies worked with Wayan Limbak and Limbak
popularized the dance by traveling throughout the world with Balinese
performance groups. These travels have helped to make the Kecak famous
throughout the world.
Performer, choreographer, and scholar I Wayan Dibia cites a contrasting
theory that the Balinese where already developing the form when Spies arrived
on the island. For example, well-known dancer I Limbak had incorporated Baris
movements into the cak leader role during the 1920s. "Spies liked this
innovation," and it suggested that Limbak, "devise a spectacle based on the
Ramayana," accompanied by cak chorus rather than gamelan, as would have
been usual.

When I was in 8th grade of junior high school, I participated in a painting
contest which took place at the education and culture office in my town. I was
competing with other 49 students. The theme of the painting was “Preserving
cultural heritages in the global age”. Everyone was provided with canvas but no
oil paint, brush or palette. We also had only been given 180 minutes to finish our
work.
By the time the contest started, everyone immediately drew sketches on
their canvas. I didn’t do the same since I was still thinking of what to draw.
Then, I finally had an idea and joined the others by drawing a sketch. I decided
to paint a street vendor selling traditional crafts while taking a selfie with
customers. I think that would be a good representation of the contest theme.

mix violet and orange colors. I already made the violet color by mixing red and
blue I panicked. Then, I tried to ask other contestants if they had some spares.
