FROM FISHERMAN TO

F I S H E R O F M A N*

Lk 5:1-11 T H E C A L L O F S I M O N T H E F I S H E R M A N

After Jesus lectured a crowd from Simon's boat, Jesus commanded Simon to lower his
nets for a catch. Simon told Him that they caught nothing all night, but at His command,
Simon still lowered the nets. He and his fellow fishermen caught a tremendous amount
of fish that their boats were almost sinking. Peter was humbled and told God to depart
from him for he was sinful. Jesus replied that Simon should not be afraid, for then on
they will be catching men. Simon, then, left everything behind and followed Jesus;
becoming a disciple.

T H E F I R S T D I S C I P L E S Jn 1:40-42

Andrew, brother of Simon and also a disciple, told Simon that he, with John and another
disciple, have found the Messiah. Andrew, then, brought Simon before Jesus. Jesus
looked at Simon and said, "You will be called Cephas" (which is translated to Peter).

Lk 16:13-19 P E T E R ' S C O N F E S S I O N   A B O U T
JESUS

Jesus asked his disciple whom they say the Son of Man is. Some said John
the Baptist, others Elijah, still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.
Jesus asked, "But who do you say that I am?" Peter replied, "You are the
Messiah, the Son of the Living God." Jesus blessed him and said "You are
Peter, and upon this rock, I will build my church; the gates of the
netherworld shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the
Kingdom of Heaven."

W A L K I N G O N T H E W A T E R Mt 14:22-33

Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and precede Him to the other
side. Then, He went up the mountain by Himself to pray. When it was

evening, He was there alone. While the boat, already a few miles offshore,
was being tossed about by the waves, for the wind was against it. During
the fourth watch of the night, Jesus came toward them, walking on the
sea. When the disciples saw Him, they were terrified. “It is a ghost,” they
cried out in fear. Jesus replied, “Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid.”
Peter said, “Lord, if it is You, command me to come to you on the water.”
Jesus said, “Come.” Peter got out of the boat and began to walk on the
water toward Jesus. But he was frightened when he saw how strong the
wind was, and beginning to sink, Peter cried out, “Lord, save me!”
Immediately, Jesus stretched out His hand and caught Peter and said to
him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” When they got into the
boat, the wind died down. Those who were on the boat did Jesus homage
saying, “Truly, You are the Son of God.”

MT 16:21-23

THE FIRST
PREDICTION OF
THE PASSION

Jesus began to show His disciples that he must
go to Jerusalem and suffer greatly from the
elders, the chief priest, and the scribes, and be
killed and on the third day be raised. Then
Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke
Him, "God forbid, Lord! No such thing shall
ever happen to You." Jesus turned and said to
Peter, "Get behind me Satan! You are an
obstacle to me. You are thinking not as God
does but as human beings do."

MT 17:1-6

THE
TRANSFIGURATION

OF JESUS

Jesus took Peter, James, and John up a high
mountain and transfigured before them.
Moses and Elijah appeared to them,
conversing with Jesus. Peter said to Jesus,

"Lord it is good that we are here. If you wish, I
will make three tents here, one for you, one

for Moses, and one for Elijah." While Peter was
still speaking, a bright cloud cast a shadow

over them, then from the cloud came a voice
that said, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I

am well-pleased; listen to Him."

PETER'S BETRAYAL

PETER'S DENIAL
F O R E T O L DLk 22:31-34

"Simon, Simon, behold Satan has demanded to sift all
of you like wheat, but I have prayed that your own faith
may not fail; and once you have turned back, you must
strengthen your brothers." Peter replied, "Lord I am
prepared to go to prison and to die with you." But
Jesus said, "I tell you, Peter, before the cock crows this
day, you will deny three times that you know me."

PETER'S DENIAL OF
J E S U SLk 22:54-62

After Jesus was arrested, the guards led Him away and took Him to the house of the high priest; Peter was
following at a distance. They lit a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat around it. Peter sat down with them.
When a maid saw him, she looked intently at him and said, "This man too was with Him," but Peter denied it
saying, "Woman I do not know him. A short while later, someone else saw him and said, "You too are one of
them. But Peter answered, "My friend I am not." About an hour later, still another insisted. "Assuredly, this man
too was with Him for he also is a Galilean," but Peter said, "My friend, I do not know what you're talking about.
Just as Peter was saying this, the cock crowed and the Lord turned and looked at Peter. Peter remembered the
word of the Lord. Peter went out and began to weep bitterly.

PETER'S

RESTORATION

JN 21:1-14 | THE
APPEARANCE TO THE SEVEN
DISCIPLES

After Jesus was crucified, buried, and
resurrected, He revealed Himself again to
His disciples at the Sea of Tiberias. Peter
said to the disciples that he was going to
fish. The disciples came with him, but
that night, they caught nothing. At dawn,
Jesus was standing on the shore, but the
disciples did not realize it was Him. Jesus
said to them, "Children, have you caught
anything to eat?" They answered no, so
Jesus said, "Cast the net over the right
side of the boat, and you will find
something." So they cast it, and were not
able to pull it in because of the number
of fish. So John said to Peter, "It is the
Lord." When Peter heard this, he jumped
into the sea. The other disciples came in
the boat, for they were not far from
shore. When they climbed out on shore,
they saw a charcoal fire with fish and
bread. Jesus said, "Bring some of the fish
you just caught." So Peter dragged the
net ashore, full of 153 large fish. Even
though there were many, the net was not
torn. Jesus said, "Come, have breakfast."
None of the disciples dared to asked
"Who are?" because they realized it was
the Lord. Jesus came over and took the
bread, and gave it to them and in like
manner the fish. This was the third time
Jesus was revealed to his disciples after
his resurrection.

Afterwards, Jesus said to Peter, "Follow me."

Jn 21:20-23

The Beloved
Disciple

Peter turned and saw John following
him and Jesus, and had said, "Lord
who is it that is going to betray You?"
When Peter saw John, he said to
Jesus, "Lord what about him?" Jesus
said to Peter, "If it is My will that he
remain until I come, what is that to
you? Follow me!" So the rumor spread
in the community that John would not
die. Yet Jesus did not say to Peter that
John would not die, but, "If it is my will
that he remain until I come, what is
that to you?"

Jn 21:24-25

Conclusion

It is John who testifies to these things
and has written them and we know his
testimony is true. There are also many
other things that Jesus did, but if these
were to be described individually, John
does not think the whole world would
contain the books that would be
written.

QUOTE #1

"Your Majesty would have a perfect right to strike off
his head," said Peridan... "It is very true," said Edmund

"But even a traitor
may mend. I have
known one that did."
