She explained thoroughly about the topics that we will be learning throughout the semester, since this subject is a non-final examination subject, she reminded us to get ready with the many assessments that needed to be done. This particular subject is quite different compared to other subjects as it required us to be physically involved in the class for us to be able to ace the subject. Some of the assessments that are required for this subject are, ESL Blog, Interactive Teaching Aids, E-portfolio, Mock-teaching, and two tests. All of these assessments are compulsory in order for us to pass the subject by the end of the semester. During the class session, she mentioned that the Malaysian education system has changed rapidly and we need to educate ourselves with the new change before stepping outside and becoming a teacher. Some of the changes made are, the annulment of centralised examinations for primary and secondary school students except for Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) that is required for form 5 students. With the decision to annulled centralised examination, the Ministry of Education has introduced Pentaksiran Berasaskan Sekolah (PBS). Other than that, the highlight of the class session was when we learned about the importance of a standardised assessment for all students in Malaysia and for that reason, we are introduced to the Dokumen Standard Kokurikulum dan Pentaksiran (DSKP) for teachers to use as a guide to ease the teaching and learning process. In other words, with the existence of DSKP, all teachers get to achieve the best end result for their students. 13 February 2023 On the first day of class for the new semester, our lecturer, Madam Nirmala briefed us about what to be expected from the subject Micro Teaching Prepared by Arena Amir for MicroTeaching E-Portfolio
After taking some time, we were asked to submit our answer in padlet for other groups to see. We also did a class discussion and Madam Nirmala took the opportunity to explain in detail about the DSKP and how it works. She also mentioned that being a teacher is not only about teaching the subject but it also about teaching the students to become a good person and how important it is to teach values so the students can develop physical, emotional, spiritual, and intellectual skills. In short, being a teacher requires a lot of patience, empathy and intrapersonal skills. 16 February 2023 In tutorial class, our lecturer had given us some questions about the DSKP. Each group was assigned with a question to discuss Prepared by Arena Amir for MicroTeaching E-Portfolio
which is that a teacher will always be a teacher even after they no longer continue their profession. Whenever a person decides to become a teacher, they sign up to become an educator for the rest of their life which means that being a teacher isn't always about teaching in a classroom but we also need to have some impact in our students’ life. Spreading some optimism and inspiring the students to always do more in life. Moreover, when becoming a teacher, we need to be open to change as we keep on involving new environments, generations, technologies and many things affecting the world today. Also in class today, we learned about the difference between collaborating activity, cooperative activity, and group work activity. Collaborating activities require the students to depend on each other to get the work done while cooperative activity is when the students cooperate with each other either as a group or individually. Lastly, group work activity is when the students work in a group without having any shared goals, they need to work together and help each other. 20 February 2023 In this class, we were discussing the previous question from last week’s class. Other than that, Madam Nirmala mentioned something quite interesting in class that day Prepared by Arena Amir for MicroTeaching E-Portfolio
To make a correct lesson plan, we need to understand the content needed in it and Madam Nirmala mentioned that in a correct lesson plan, we need to know which lesson to teach, the theme/topic, focus skills, language grammar focus and the Content Standard and Learning Standard. Before choosing the CL and LS for our lesson plan, we need to know how to understand the content inside the DSKP. In a lesson plan, we need to put the same exact Content Standard and Learning Standard that we get from the DSKP based on our focus skills. There are two types of focus skills in a lesson plan, the first one is the main skill and the other one is the complementary skill. Each CL and LS need to be paired accordingly. For example, if the main skill is reading then the CL and LS need to be for reading and not writing. We also learned how to write the Learning Objectives. LO must be aligned to the focus skills, CS, and LS. We need to write only 3 LO per lesson plan, this is because writing too many LO is like setting impossible requirements for the students to achieve. Madam Nirmala mentioned about thinking hats and how it might help the learning session. There are six hats which are red, black, yellow, green, white, and blue and each of these hats has its own purpose such to help with their critical thinking process. 23 February 2023 The class started with some questions about CEFR vs KFFR and 3.1 vs 3.1.2. Later, we proceed with learning how to make a lesson plan and whatto write in it Prepared by Arena Amir for MicroTeaching E-Portfolio
she said that LO is what the students need to achieve. It is something we put to measure and hope to achieve by the end of the class or certain topic. Therefore, the role of LO in a lesson plan is to be specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time based (SMART). She also said that we should not set a specific target that is impossible for the students to achieve in an hour-long learning session. If it sounds impossible for us to teach everything in an hour, it must be impossible for them to acquire it too. So it is advisable to set a learning objective that is relevant to their learning or content standard, topic learned, level of proficiency, and skill focus on that day. Before ending the class, we proceed with a discussion regarding the chapter that we just learned. Madam Nirmala asked everyone two questions, the first one is, “Why do teachers need to share Learning Objectives with the students?” And the second one, “How do you share your Learning Objectives to the students?” 27 February 2023 In this class, Madam Nirmala introduced us to chapter 2: Teaching and Learning Objectives. Here, Madam Nirmala explained thoroughly regarding learning objectives Prepared by Arena Amir for MicroTeaching E-Portfolio
In short, we learned about another way for us to write LO in our lesson plan. Miss Siti Hajar introduced us with the ABCD method, which is an acronym for Audience (the students), Behaviour (action verb), Condition (requirements), and Degree (target amount/number). Then, Miss Siti Hajar proceeded to give us a task in which we needed to sit in pairs and write at least three learning objectives using the method earlier. Upon finishing writing our LO, Madam Siti Hajar gave us some feedback and submitted our LO on padlet for discussion. 2 March 2023 On this day,the class was taken over by Miss Siti Hajar and we learned a way to interpret Content Standard and Learning Standard into LearningObjectives Prepared by Arena Amir for MicroTeaching E-Portfolio
Upon finishing the discussion session, we were reintroduced to the ABCD method to make sure that we really understand the concept behind the method. Then, we were introduced to the set induction and how to conduct a good set induction. A good set induction must be thought provoking and exciting to the students. It should make the students feel excited to know what they are going to learn on that day. As mentioned by Madam Nirmala, there are four strategies to a good set induction, the first one is the attention getting method, second one is the interest method, next is putting the lesson in context and last but not least is the advance organisers. 6 March 2023 On this day, the class was conducted online through zoom. In the zoom, we discussed the LO from our previous class and was given feedback by Madam Nirmala Prepared by Arena Amir for MicroTeaching E-Portfolio
Here, we need to set the content from one stage to another and keep it as smooth as possible to ensure better learning. Other than that, if we ever want to use a video as a part of our set induction, we need to make sure that the video did not exceed 1 minute duration. This is because we only have a short amount of time to manage the class. Madam Nirmala gave us a task where we need to find a topic in the textbook and prepare to present our set induction. Each group has to send one representative to present their set induction based on the topic chosen. Madam Nirmala ends each presentation with her feedback to make sure that everyone can improve and avoid any careless mistakes. She also reminds us to always acknowledge whenever the students answer any of our questions whether it is right or wrong. Giving some acknowledgement to the students can help boost their confidence and interest in class. Before ending the class, Madam Nirmala briefed us about project 1 which is an Educational Game that needs to be presented on 20th March. 9 March 2023 During our tutorial class, we did a recap on chapter 3: Set Induction. During set induction, we are required to spend at least 5 to 7 minutes before moving on to the next session Prepared by Arena Amir for MicroTeaching E-Portfolio
We need to dress formally and take turns to teach for about 5 to 7 minutes. For this mock teaching, we will be only focusing on the set induction, however, we still need to prepare a complete and detailed lesson plan to use for the mock teaching. After that, the class continued with us doing a task given by Madam Nirmala. Each group was assigned with one type of teaching aid and we needed to come up with a topic, focus skills, and how to use the teaching aid accordingly. My group was assigned a brochure and realia. We chose form 5: Life’s Great Mystery for brochure and reading as the focus skill while form 3: Food! Food! Food! For realia and speaking as the focus skill. How to use the brochure as our teaching aids is by asking the students to read the entire brochure and look for the highlighted words, after finding the words, they then need to find the synonyms and antonyms for the highlighted words. For realia, the teacher will bring two different types of fruits to class and ask the students to give two similar adjectives that can be used to describe both of the fruits. 23 March 2023 In this class, Madam Nirmala started the class by briefing everyone about the individual Mock Teaching that we need to do in a group offive Prepared by Arena Amir for MicroTeaching E-Portfolio
The more the teachers expand their stimulus, the better the class attention will be and the more effective the learning session becomes. According to Madam Nirmala, there are five contributory factors to get the students' attention, the first one is intensity. A loud sound and an intense bright light will definitely capture someone’s attention, therefore using extra fun activities, different sizes of teaching aids, loud sounds or clear voice projection will make a change. Next is contrast in anything which is bigger than the other things in the surrounding will attract the students’ attention. Then, we have movement. Attention is sustained if the students are asked or motivated to engage themselves in instructional activities, so, it is advisable for teachers to create activities that include physical movements. Audio-visual aids can also be used with a variety of audio-visual media to make your teaching more effective and meaningful. Lastly, the teacher's personal behaviour. Teachers should be enthusiastic, stimulating, energetic, and expressive to get more attention than when the teacher is dull and monotonous. 27 March 2023 In this class, Madam Nirmala introduced us to chapter 4: Stimulus Variation. In short, stimulus variation is a way for the teachers to make sure that their students are maintaining theirfull attention during the learning session Prepared by Arena Amir for MicroTeaching E-Portfolio
Madam Nirmala mentioned that there are many characteristics to a good question which every teacher needs to comprehend. Each characteristic helps in identifying what a good question is and it must be short, thought provoking, straight forward, comprehensible, unambiguous, relevant, related to the objectives, clearly stated, and lastly contain common vocabulary. Teachers should ask questions that contain Bloom’s Taxonomy and try to avoid difficult questions for a starter but instead teachers should ask easy to hard questions, gradually moving to harder questions based on the students’ answers. This is to avoid the students from feeling nervous and pressured. Teachers also should rephrase the questions to make it simpler and easier for the students to comprehend. Lastly, before the class ends, Madam Nirmala reminded us about the second mock teaching. We need to add the first activity into our lesson plan and use questioning techniques and stimulus variants. We need to create questions that have purpose and train our students to answer the questions. 3 April 2023 In this class, we continued to the next chapter which is theQuestioning Techniques. We learned that to prepare ourselves in the classroom to open conversations, inspire intellectual thought, and promote studentto studentinteraction Prepared by Arena Amir for MicroTeaching E-Portfolio
Other than that, it is also to see if we were able to have impromptu conversations as well as open/closed questions because as a teacher it is important for us to ask various questions to the students based on the Bloom’s Taxonomy. There are three strategies that can be used to respond to students’ responses. The strategies are reinforcement, probing, and adjusting. All of these strategies are suggested to be used in the classroom by the teachers in order to make an interesting learning session. 6 April 2023 During our tutorial class, we did a task for chapter 5: questioning techniques. The task was a talk show where we needed to use the techniques that we had learned previously Prepared by Arena Amir for MicroTeaching E-Portfolio
We were assigned by Madam Nirmala to assess group 14 according to the requirements. As mentioned in the previous class, we needed to assess the mock teaching strictly and that was exactly what my group was doing. We assessed group 14’s videos and submitted our feedback on the google form given by our lecturer. 10 April 2023 On this day, we were asked to do an online assessmentfor our previous mock teaching Prepared by Arena Amir for MicroTeaching E-Portfolio
In this chapter, we learned how to maintain students’ good behaviour as well as toning down any negative behaviour during the learning session in class. Positive reinforcement is defined as giving or providing a stimulus that can immediately increase good behaviour and maintain it. As for negative reinforcement, it is when we take or remove something away from the students which will tone down their negative behaviour. Using different types of reinforcement can help maintain the students’ attention span and avoid them from feeling bored. Some examples of reinforcements are, verbal praises, giving them attention, giving them gifts or rewards, or giving them some time out from work. However, negative reinforcement can be necessary depending on the situation at hand. For example, not giving them some time to rest because they didn't get the work done by the time given. 13 April 2023 In ourtutorial class, Madam Nirmala introduced us to chapter 6: Reinforcement Strategies Prepared by Arena Amir for MicroTeaching E-Portfolio
Basically, we learned that the closure part is where the teacher reviews the most important points of the lesson and see if it were connected to the LO. The closing part in a lesson plan is crucial because we want to see if the students were able to understand the topics that were taught on that day and how they can use the knowledge on the outside world. In the closure part, it is advisable to limit themselves to 3 to 5 minutes and they should ask students many questions related to the LO to see their understanding of the subject matter. However, doing a Q&A session might be too basic, so teachers can include a short activity to make the session more effective. The closure part is important in a lesson plan, we get to see if the students were able to understand the lesson and if they didn't, it means that we need to improvise our techniques for the next class. By doing a proper evaluation on the closure part, we get to understand the students’ needs and we get to cater the best methods to help them learn. 8 May 2023 In the class, we were introduced to chapter 8: Closure which explains about the closure section in a lesson plan Prepared by Arena Amir for MicroTeaching E-Portfolio
11 May 2023 On this day, we were asked to do an online assessmentfor our previous mock teaching We were assigned by Madam Nirmala to assess group 11 according to the requirements. As mentioned in the previous class, we needed to assess the mock teaching strictly and that was exactly what my group was doing. We assessed group 11’s videos and submitted our feedback on the google form given by our lecturer. Prepared by Arena Amir for MicroTeaching E-Portfolio
Madam Nirmala started the class by reminding us about our final mock teaching which will be conducted online later this week and she also mentioned our e-portfolio and asked us to do a presentation next Monday. Later, we proceed with learning chapter 9. We learned about what to do and not to do when using a whiteboard when teaching. Madam Nirmala said that the whiteboard is a useful tool that we should take advantage of. Not only is it very convenient to the students, it also helps the teacher to write down many important things during the teaching session. Although we thought that writing on a whiteboard is an easy thing to do, we learned that there are a lot of mistakes that have been made by us. Madam Nirmala specifically told us that we need to write down the topic of the day on the whiteboard, it helps the students to understand what to expect on the learning session that day. Other than that, it is also advisable to write down the students’ answers on the whiteboard so that they know we as the teacher recognise their effort. It helps boost the student's self esteem and confidence. After a while, we were asked to step outside of the class and bring along our mahjong paper and marker. Madam Nirmala wanted to see our writing on a whiteboard, so the mahjong paper acted out as a whiteboard to us. When waiting on a whiteboard, it is important not to block the students' view, so we need to stand 90 degrees to the side while writing anything down. We took turns writing our name on the mock whiteboard and after a while, Madam Nirmala came to check and gave us her thoughts and comments on our writings. 15 May 2023 For this class, we were informed in the telegram group to prepare a mahjong paper and a marker as it will be used during the class session when learning chapter 9: Use of White/Blackboard in classroom Prepared by Arena Amir for MicroTeaching E-Portfolio
The purpose of the machine is to use in set induction, lesson delivery, or closure. It is flexible and can be used on different topics too. We created the bubblegum machine within three days and within those days of preparation, we also figured out how to effectively use the bubblegum machine in a classroom setting. Other than that, we also prepared the written report for the project and submitted it on the same day. By the end of our presentation, we received constructive feedback from Madam Nirmala. 20 March 2023 This is the day where we need to present our Project 1: Educational Game. We did a ‘bubblegum machine’ which is a device that is 100% hand made by my group Project 1: EducationalGame Bubblegum Machine Prepared by Arena Amir for MicroTeaching E-Portfolio
The e-blog should be able to help the students to do self-learning while still having the guidance of their teachers. Thus, my group decided to choose form 3, topic: Wonder of Nature. We designed the e-blog complete with speaking, reading, listening, and writing skills activities. We designed our ‘website’ complete with accessible features where you can click on every part of the website that will redirect you to another page. After presenting our website, Madam Nirmala gave us positive feedback saying that she was really satisfied with our website and how simple and easy it is to use. She also mentioned that our website is manageable for form 3 students to use. 17 April 2023 On this day, it was our E-blog project presentation. For this project, we were asked to create an E-blog that can be accessed by secondary school students Project 2: E-Blog Edulogy Educational Website Prepared by Arena Amir for MicroTeaching E-Portfolio
O V E RA L L R E F E L C T I O N Reflecting on an entire semester this class, I am filled with a lot of valuable insights. This subject has been both challenging and rewarding, providing me with a deeper understanding of the teaching profession and its impact on students' learning journeys. In this subject, I have learned to reinforced the importance of thorough planning and preparation. As I had to carefully design lesson plans, considering the needs and learning styles of my students. I learned that a well structured and organised lesson not only promotes engagement but also helps students grasp the concepts more effectively. Throughout the semester, I learned to create clear objectives, appropriate instructional strategies, and develop meaningful activities that help the students to actively participate in sharpen their critical thinking. In conclusion, the entire semester this subject has been a helping me and enlightening my experience. As I continue on my journey to becoming an educator, I will carry these valuable lessons with me, using them to guide my future teaching practices and ultimately contribute to the growth and success of my students.
