Ballet is considered a branch of art that the new generation should be acquainted with. It is a form of storytelling through movement and expressive performances. For this "27th Junior Ballet Concert" this time, it showcased the abilities and efforts of the performers, while also presenting a beauty that is both impressive and captivating. In the full-length ballet perfor- mance of “The Wizard of Oz” by Bangkok City Ballet School, it brought back the story in a new rendition, demonstrating the importance of learning through stage performances. I extend my gratitude to Bangkok City Ballet School for recognizing the significance of learning through stage performances and for consistently producing stage productions that continuously capture the audience's attention. 6 The 27th Junior Ballet Concert - Synopsis Coppélia • Dance of the Hours 時の踊り • La discorde et la gu rre (War and Discord) 戦いの踊り • Franz and Swanilda’s Wedding, Pas de deux フランツとスワニルダの結婚式のグラン・パ・ド・ドゥ Coppeélia is a comic ballet originally choreographed by Arthur Saint-Leon to the music of Leéo Delibes. The story is about Dr.Coppeélius, who is a doctor, has made a life-size dancing doll. It is so lifelike that Franz, a village young man, becomes infatuated with it and set aside his true heart’s desire, Swanilda. She shows him his folly by dressing as the doll, pretending to make it come to life and ultimately saving him from an untimely end at the hands of Dr.Coppeélius. In the 27th Junior Ballet Concert, our Intermediate 1 students will perform Dance of the Hours as their rst time appearing in the Gala session. It was originally choreographed by August Bournonville, a very well-known ballet master. The ballet tells the story of Teresina, a young Italian girl who falls in love with Gennaro, a erman. The tale culminates in the marriage of the lovers. This time, we will only present a piece of Tarantella from act 3, where the townsfolk celebrate the lover’s wedding. Later, Petipa substituted the Grand pas des éevantails for new showcase pieces – he fi rst replaced it in 1868 with a pas de six for Adele Grantzow and again in 1887 with a pas de deux for Emma Bes- sone and Enrico Cecchetti. In 1903, Sergei Legat added his own pas de deux to grotto scene. The notated Grand pas of the grotto scene is the pas de six, which is performed by Conrad, Medora and four female coryphees. Marius Petipa presented a lavish revival of Le Corsaire to the music of Adolphe Adam. In the Act 3, Scene 1, Lankendem presents the Pasha with three ladies of ideal beauty to entertain the harem. They dance a Grand pas de trois des Odalisques. Soon, Lankendem carries in the greatest prize-Medora. Precious Stones, Pas de trois 宝石のパ・ド・トロワ This pas de trois is from the Sleeping Beauty’s Act 3. The Court and several fairy tale characters assemble in the King Florestan’s palace to celebrate the marriage of Prince Déésire and Princess Aurora. A series of divertissements is performed, including this pas de trois of the Precious Stones. This Pas de deus choreographed by Duncan Lyle and featuring music by Ludwig Minkus arranged by Duncan himself. This Classical ballet is based on the fairytale of “ The Fisherman and the Fish”. Originally choreographed by Arthur Saint-Leon in 1867. 10 The 27th Junior Ballet Concert - Synopsis The Wizard of Oz (Bangkok City Ballet School’s version) Scene 1 In front of Chelsea and Dorothy’s house The twin sisters, Chelsea and Dorothy always fi ght over their corn dolly. The twins never help their Uncle Henry and Aunt Emma who are their surrogate parents. Therefore, the twins are always scolded by them. Finally, they are not allowed to enter the house. Then the three farmhands enter. Twin Chelsea and Dorothy ask the farmhands, ‘Please play with us!” However, the three farmhands are too busy to listen to what the twins say. While Chelsea and Dorothy are so disappointed, the storm suddenly happens. They are blown off by the strong wind and faint. They start dreaming of the adventure in the land of Oz. Scene 2 The land of Munchkins There are two witches in the land of Oz. One is Glinda, the good witch and the other is the Wicked Witch. When Chelsea and Dorothy wake up, they appear in the land of Munchkins. Munchkins fl ock fussily to see the shock appearance of Chelsea and Dorothy whom they have never seen before. Chelsea and Dorothy tell Glinda that they would like to go back to their house. However, Glinda tells them to go to the Emerald City to ask the Wizard of Oz for help. Chelsea and Dorothy ask, “How could we meet Oz of the Emerald City?” Glinda explains, “If only both of you promise that you would get along happily with each other, then I will tell you how” and gives them the red shoes. Once they have promised that they would get along happily with each other, Glinda tells them that they can fi nd the Emerald City by following the yellow brick road. The Wicked Witch, who has kept an eye on them, attacks them so as to snatch the red shoes that could ful fill whatever the owner wishes for. However, the Wicked Witch’s broomstick, which is her life, is deprived by Chelsea and Dorothy. The Wicked Witch becomes even angry and the twins are able to run away from her. Scene 3 The forest Chelsea and Dorothy eventually have a narrow escape from the Wicked Witch to the forest. They meet a Scarecrow with no brain, a fl ock of gentle squirrels that give them walnuts, a Tin Lady with no heart, a herd of curious rabbits and a cowardly Lion. The three; the Scarecrow, the Tin Lady and the Lion decide to accompany Chelsea and Dorothy to the Emerald City with hopes of fulfilling their desires. Scene 4 The poppy fifif i eld The Wicked Witch has kept her evil eyes on them and makes the twins lose their way and stray into the poppy fields where they give off the odour to make Chelsea and Dorothy sleep in order to steal the red shoes. The Scarecrow, the Tin Lady and the Lion fi nd their way to see the twins again and chase the Wicked Witch and her limbs away. But they are now at a loss because they don’t know how to help the sleeping twins. The Tin Lady is extremely sad and cries for the fi rst time in her life. The Scarecrow keeps thinking how to make the twins awake, and propose to look for Glinda to make Chelsea and Dorothy awake. Glinda calls the Snow Queen to gather up the Snow Fairies, in order to wake the twins up. However, the poor Tin Lady who keeps crying this time gets rusty because of the snow making her wet. When oil is applied to the Tin Lady, she is able to move again. And the fi ve continue heading for the Emerald City.
11 Synopsis - The 27th Junior Ballet Concert Scene 5 Fighting In the dark, the Wicked Witch and her limbs lie in wait for the fi ve in the forest so as to snatch the red shoes. Getting suddenly attacked, the Lion is so frightened by the situation. The Wicked Witch managed to catch one of the girls but in the time of need, the Lion shows his courage and fi ghts the Wicked Witch. When the Lion seems to be injured, Chelsea and Dorothy help each other to break the Wicked Witch’s broomstick which is her life. The Wicked Witch and her limbs all die. Scene 6 On Route to Oz After escaping from the Wicked Witch and destroying her broomstick, the fi ve flee from the woods and run, in haste, towards the Emerald City, fearing they are still being. Scene 7 The Emerald City A lot of trials are over. Finally, all fi ve of them arrive at the Emerald City, where the Emerald citizens live contentedly all day. Then Glinda appears and says, “I am actually Oz”. Glinda has watched fi ve of them for long time. And she says, “You have already obtained what you had been searching for all along the way to here.” Also, she says to Chelsea and Dorothy, “Two of you have helped each other very well. If you would like to return home, click the heels of the red shoes three times.” Scene 8 In front of Chelsea and Dorothy’s house Chelsea and Dorothy say a tearfully good bye to everyone. Both of them awaken from the dream. They apologize to Uncle Henry and Aunt Emma for never helping but fi ghting all the time. 20 The 27th Junior Ballet Concert - Guest Profiles Guest Profiles Sun Tawalwongsri (KING) Asst. Prof. Dr. Sun Tawalwongsri is currently working as the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at Faculty of Fine and Applied Arts, Suan Sunandha Rajabhat University. He was a chairperson of the Performing Arts Department and a founder of Theatre Arts and Creative Entrepreneurship Program. Sun earned his B.F.A. in Drama and M.A. in Cultural Management at Thammasat University. He completed M.Phil. in Drama and Theatre at Royal Holloway, University of London and Diploma in Dance Teaching and Learning (DDTAL) at Trinity Laban College, UK. He received the 100th Anniversary Chulalongkorn University Fund for Doctoral Scholarship and completed his doctorate in Fine Arts (D.F.A.), having focused on Contemporary Dance and Gender Diversity in Thailand. In addition, he received his M.Ed. in Entrepreneurship Education at Kasetsart University. Sun is an interdisciplinary artist who has internationally diverse performance experiences as a choreographer, director, dancer, actor, designer, puppeteer and poet both in Thai and on the world stage. During 25 years' experience of working in the performing arts and creative industry, he also trained intensive summer courses in Limon Dance Technique with Limon Dance Company at Kent State University, USA and in Gaga/Dancers at Batsheva Dance Company, Israel. He was trained in a various dance styles including ballet, jazz, tap, and contemporary dance at Bangkok City Ballet since 2001. He was a dancer, costume designer, the project manager and PR for BCB during 2003-2005.
