Ali Khalil—City College of New York Class of 2022 Salutatorian

Ali Khalil grew up in Egypt and came to the United States in 2016. He is a pre-med student majoring in biology and plans to
become a doctor one day. He enjoys doing research in various fields. He was part of the Eisele Research Group at the City
College Center for Discovery and Innovation, where he worked in the nano field to synthesize gold and silver nanoparticles for
drug delivery and light harvesting purposes. He was also part of Dr. Issa Salame’s honors research group, where he conducted
survey-based research to understand how students learn science through different methods of teaching and worked towards
addressing their misconceptions to improve their learning and performance. His passion for volunteering in the community-led
him to join the City Tutors program, where he supported students academically. Aside from that, he was also an active student,
who was involved in healthcare clubs. He was the Secretary of the Alpha Epsilon Delta Club, where he communicated with
students about healthcare events and volunteering opportunities that are beneficial to students who are interested in pursuing
healthcare related jobs. His academic honors at City College include the Dean’s Honors List, Salutatorian of the Class of 2022,
the Ira & Cecille Weber Scholarship from the Division of Science, and the S Jay Levy Fellowship. The last is a yearlong
professional development experience for academically accomplished and career focused students. It culminates in a summer
internship or research experience.
According to Ali, the years he spent at City College have inspired him to continue his academic career in medical school,
where he hopes to help patients and bring a positive change to their lives. In addition, it made him appreciate the value of
community work, which brought a great deal of satisfaction to his life.

Kazi Maisha– Division of Science Class of 2022 Valedictorian

Kazi Maisha is a premedical student, majoring in biology and minoring in psychology. Her honors include the Dean's Honors
List, the Gerald S. Brenner Endowed Science Scholarship, the Presidential Volunteer Service Award, and the Bernard B. Lev-
ine Scholarship in Science and Mathematics. Kazi serves on the Division of Science Students’ Council as the Biology depart-
ment leader. She also served the division as a peer mentor, and chemistry and math tutor. She aspires to be a doctor that serves
the poor and wants to be involved in nonprofit work for sexual abuse survivors. Ultimately, she wants to live a life where she
can help the less privileged.
