Port Jervis hosts Moon Festival

By Nicki Musselwhite
Community News Co-Editor

The Moon Festival, a Chinese celebration held in the beginning of fall, was
held in Port Jervis on Sept. 17 and 18.

At the event, there were a variety of booths with different kinds of food and
informational handouts. There was also live music, dances and entertainment.

A worker at one of the booths said that the festival is similar to Thanksgiving
because it allows families to reunite. It is a celebration of the rice harvest, the
moon and the mooncake.

The mooncake represents the moon, which is at its fullest during this time of
year. The origin of the mooncake comes all the
way from overthrowing the Mongol Dynasty,
which happened in the 14th century.
