JATHILAN DANCE
Sekarang, ayo berlatih
Tari Jathilan!

KLOTHEKAN: AN INDONESIAN TRADISIONAL MUSIC
Picture 1. Children Play “Klothekan”
Music can be defined as sounds that are regular, rhythmic and harmonious. The
sound does not only come from musical instruments that we know such as piano, guitar,
violin, trumpet and others, but also comes from familiar objects around us such as a table,
glasses, buckets, gallons of mineral water, bottles, spoons, and so on. A question arises:
can simple tools around us produce a rhythmic, harmonious and interesting sound that
can be enjoyed? We will introduce you our traditional music called “klothekan”.
The term “klothekan” comes from the sound made from objects being hit or beaten,
causing a loud noise "thek-thek-thek" which people then call it “klothekan”. In some areas
in Indonesia, klothekan is also a hereditary tradition, namely the tradition of waking
people up by walking around the village using household appliaces such as buckets, pans,
gallons, and so on. Nowadays, klothekan is no longer played only to wake people up with
its noisy voice, but klothekan also has started to become a musical performance. It comes
with new arrangements so that the sound of klothekan becomes harmonious, beautiful,
interesting and entertaining.
Some musical elements related to klothekan music are as follows.
1. Rhythm is a series of regular movements that are the basic elements of music.
Rhythm relates to the short length of notes and the severity of the stress or accent
on the notes, as well as the regular movement. This regularity of motion makes the
song more beautiful to hear and feel.
2. Tempo is a measure of speed of a song's rhythm which is also one of the elements
of a musical work of art. If the song is played in a faster way, the higher or greater
the tempo value of the music. Tempo itself has several categories, namely, very
slow (largo), slower (lento), slow (adagio), medium (andante), slightly fast
(moderato), fast (allegro), faster (vivace) and the last one is very fast (presto).
3. Harmony is a combination of tones played in a piece of music or a set of tones
which, when played together, will produce a beautiful sound.
10
4. Timbre is a tone color (voice/sound) that is different for each vocal or instrument.
The timbre produced by a wind instrument will be different from the timbre of a
string or percussion instruments, even though the instruments are played
together.
At this moment, we will learn and practice how to play klothekan music using the
following tools.
1. Ember Besar (large bucket)
Ember besar dapat menghasilkan suara rendah (low) sehingga dapat
difungsikan sebagai suara bass drum dalam perkusi.
Gambar 2. Ember Besar (Large Bucket)

2. Galon (gallon)
Galon kosong dapat menghasilkan suara agak rendah (low-mid), sehingga
dapat difungsikan sebagai suara tenor bass dalam perkusi.

RAMAYANA PUPPET
Ramayana is one of the most famous historical story in Java. There are some
version of story about Ramayana. Long short story, it is believed that the Indonesian
version of the epic was written during the Medang Kingdom (732-1006 AD) in Central
Java. It is known as “Kakawin Ramayana”, as it is in kakawin meter in Old Javanese
language. At the time, Buddhism was dominant in Sumatra, West, and Central Java.
Through shadow puppetry (wayang kulit and wayang purwa), the story of Ramayana
helped bring about a resurgence in Hinduism. Of course, the story has been adapted from
the original and changed a bit throughout the centuries. The version that you get in
Indonesia is different from the one you might see in Thailand, and both are quite different
from the original. (Source: https://blogs.transparent.com/indonesian/indonesian-
