Rob Gustke D is only one e of the ma d ny charac i teristi c cs it takes a for a per t son to i emba o rk on the a n dventure of teaching, learning, and living in a community like ours here at Fountain Valley. Humor, resilience, grit, passion, empathy, humility, collegiality, trust, perhaps even a bit of madness... but dedication is perhaps the most important of them all. Some may believe dedication to be quantified by the amount of time one spends pursuing a given objective, while others might believe it is the conviction with which one engaged in the pursuit. The beauty of a place like Fountain Valley School is that we can recognize dedication in any one of its forms, in countless different ways we show up for one another, for the mission of the school, for our community. The following people have each embodied dedication in their own way and left an important mark on our community, and it is with immense gratitude that we wish them the best in their next pursuits, the next level of the game of life. And as so many of them have taught us, we will always remember: don't forget to play! Mr. Rob Gustke began his tenure at FVS in the Fall of 1990. He was brought on as a member of the Science Department, and, since then, his bread-and-butter non-elective class has always been Biology. Robhasalwaysbeen extremely creative,andhe hasdevelopedsome signature senior electives that were deeply loved – in particular, his Colorado Natural History Class, during which he took students into the plains to identify bugs, among other natural paraphernalia. During these forays, Rob would also have students collect specimens for their infamous bug box projects. A passionate butterfly enthusiast, Rob also spearheaded the construction of the butterfly garden just outside his classroom. Rob came to FVS with major-league mountaineering experience, and it is well-known that he has attempted and nearly reached the summit of Mt. Everest multiple times. His attempts are a testament to his love of the sport and his desire to challenge himself. In fact, Rob has always taken excellent advantage of Professional Development opportunities, as he’s always pushing himself to grow, whether it be in regards to his vocation or the outdoors. With his myriad outdoor experience, Rob quickly became the director of the Outdoor Ed program and worked closely with RobGilbert. Over the years, Robtransitioned to coaching swimming, and he helped to steer the FVS swimming programs to new heights. He even completed the Alcatraz swim with Addie Green and the Fountain Valley School swim team THREE times. Rob was also the designer and implementer of the Western Immersion Program – an outdoor experiential ed curriculum at the Mountain Campus where 10th graders learn about the ecology and culture of the Rocky Mountain West over the course of a week. This program, above all else, reflects his alternative and heavily hands-on approach to education. Rob Gilbert Kathleen Czop Addie Green '06 O'Neal Turner Dr. Rob Gilbert arrived at Fountain Valley School in the Fall of 1993. Originally hired on as the Principal AP U.S. History teacher, he has remained the lead AP U.S. History Teacher ever since. In the last decade, Dr. G. has also been an AP Reader and has advanced up the AP hierarchical ranks as a table leader and one of the critical decision-makers in determining whether or not an AP test answer is adequate. Over the course of his tenure at FVS, Rob has taught several senior electives, the most notable of which has been American Environmentalism. For a time, he even team-taught a combined biology-history class with Rob Gustke, which focused on the plains on which we live and evolved from his American Environmentalism class. Upon hisarrival to FVS, Rob wasalso heavily involvedin theOutdoor Edprogram; however, he gradually became interested in, and the helped to develop and transform the climbing program at FVS. Since it’s inception, the FVS climbing team has made it to State and WON on multiple occasions, including this past spring. And before FVS had a computer program to sort students into trip groups, Rob was the co-director of Interim. He would sort out every students’ request by hand, and he was masterful at assigning Interim groups. While Rob has been an exceptional member of this community for the entirety of his time at Fountain Valley, there is no denying that, among his myriad accomplishments, the most impressive has to be his winning streak at the annual Stupid Night Out spam-eating contest, which lasted for several years.
