FROM REHEARSAL…

TO PERFORMANCE!

A busy summer with a student-directed show

Drama Program Coordinator Prof. Jill Brumer actors how to do this or do that,” but really, it’s
interviewed This Side of Heaven’s student director, like everything. You’ve got to be like, “this is how
Cyn Cooper, on the closing date of the show (July I want this to look, this is how I want that to look.
7th). Here’s what they had to say about their That wasn’t good.” I don’t think a lot of people
summer experience and the directing process: realize how actually involved a director should
be.
JB: What is something directors do that most
people don’t realize? What did you discover during JB: What was the most challenging part of this
this process? production, or directing in general?

CC: I feel like, and I guess this probably depends CC: Well, a. first ever time directing. That was
on what kind of director a person is, ...I’m an all- challenging. For me, it was the blocking. It’s hard
hand-on-deck kind of person; like, I jump into for me to express what’s in my head, and a lot of
every little part of the show. A lot of people don’t times I would have to get up and show them
realize, I think, just how much involvement a what I’m talking about. And also, considering that
director actually has. I think a lot of people think the show had a wheelchair, crutches, and a
that directing is, like “Oh, you’re just telling the walker, and a cane. Having to practice without a
lot of that and then, and then being like, “OK,

…now use it,” I think that was probably the
most difficult part of this show.
JB: What is something you’re super proud of
about this show?
CC: I just think that the overall connection
between [actors] Sydney and Jacobo, like
having them have that relationship and
connection form– because sometimes that
doesn’t happen, and it’s a little bit of a push
and a shove.
JB: Why did you choose this show?
CC: I chose it because, you know, it’s a one
act, but also because it, for me, is a profound
story. There’s just something really neat
about, like, when you put two people in a
room together, every week, for several weeks,
and they’ve both gone through a similar- but
different- experience, and they’re both moody
17 year olds. You know, even though they’re
seventeen, adults can relate to them, and
really anyone can relate to a story like that.
