Ladies and Gentlemen,

Batik is a traditional textile originating from the is-

and skill about Gutta Tamarind technique in Batik.

We would like to thank to Ms. Elida Maria Matsumoto,
the Director and to all of the committee of the Fu-
kuoka Festival 2018 for this wonderful opportunity.
Hopefully through this workshop, Universitas Kristen
Maranatha can inspire all of the students and atten-
dance and it can also become a blessing for all of us.

Welcoming Speech

Greetings from Indonesia

According to direction of President Joko Widodo, Ja-
pan is a strategic partner for Indonesia so that it is
expected Indonesia and Japan are going to be able
to increase cooperation in various fields. Based on
this statement, we are glad to welcome the invitation
for Flaming Elephant addressed to Study Program of
Fine Art of Universitas Kristen Maranatha to give a
batik workshop based on eco green. To realize it, we
appoint Dr Ariesa Pandanwangi to give the workshop
in Fukuoka, Japan.

Eco green of Batik is the batik development using
Tamarindus indica lin that is processed into cold wax.
This material is the original natural resource of Indo-
nesia. It means that the plant can be useful to support
the development material of batik. Besides that, Eco
green of Batik is also a part of the lecture of paint-
ing in our campus. Through this event, Japanese can
know one of local genuine of Indonesia on fabric.

We realize that the culture can be a bridge to attain
successful diplomatic relationship. Therefore, we
hope the cooperation between us will contribute to
the development of friendship between Indonesia and
Japan and be able to boost the culture exchange. We
expect that Art Festival of Fukuoka Jepang in 2018
will be successful to be held.

Bandung, 1 July 2018

This painting starts from my research in Nias. There
are many traditional houses that have still stand
strong in spite of earthquakes. The biggest tradition-
al house is Omo Hada which locates in Bawomataluo,
South Nias. This house resembles a ship and has
high artistic value and shows a magnificent symbol
of the antique local community of Nias. Omo Hada
was built by no steel pile construction structure. Its
rectangular shape is built by stone-anchored pillars
and proven to have resistance of earthquake. This
traditional house becomes an inspiration in paintings
created with gutta tamarind media on fabric.

CONCEPT:
Earthquake without noise shaking Nias actually has
power to destroy Omo Hada. On the other hand, Omo
Hada still stands strong. This painting on polyester
fabric is made by modern batik technique and has
four thematic series of Nias artworks of painting.

Artworks Mooi Indie Reflection | 2018
50 x 50 cm
1) Batik with Gutta Tamarind
Batik on Cotton
Batik is the art of decorating cloth,
using hot wax and dye. Batik is a Gilang Cempaka
technique that has been practiced
for centuries in Indonesia. 21

Currently, I am developing a new
technique of Batik which using cold
wax. The cold wax also known as
gutta tamarind is come from seeds
of Tamarind, a typical plant from
Java-Indonesia. It is a substitute
for hot wax that commonly used for
conventional batik.

The fabric that I usually use is made
from natural resources (such as
silk and cotton) and synthetic fab-
ric (such as polyester). Most of the
batik’s themes were inspired by the
natural beauty of Indonesia, such
as forests, rice fields, mountains,
and other floras.

I also develop my signature batik’s
artworks, about Indonesian women
heroes, puppets, and mythology
stories of the Indonesia’s archipel-
ago. My visual style is decorative,
which represented by bright and
contrast colors. I use many aes-
thetic elements and ornament of
Indonesian batik.

Welcoming Speech

I support this Gutha Batik Method Workshop because
it is good for building a relationship between Indone-
sia and Japan. I know that Japan and Indonesia have
already done some contributions to Politic, Economy,
Art & Culture.
Batik is the most wonderful cultural heritage from
Indonesia; different cities have their own style. One of
the materials for Batik Process is made from Gutha.
According to my perspective, this workshop is an im-
portant event because it is able to share history and
techniques.
I hope people in Japan will come and join this event so
that they will be able have a great experience paint-
ing with gutha. Podomoro University supports Nurul
Primayanti as gutha artist to give the workshop.
We hope this event will be successfully done and re-
ally excited to tone up together for another event.
