NAMMA JITO MAGAZINE
SECOND EDITION

Freedom to communicate is the first step to progress. The success of
any organization majorly lies in its ability to effectively and comfortably
communicate with its members. To bridge this gap while extending a
new hand of inclusivity, the JITO Chennai Chapter has endeavoured
to launch a magazine called “NAMMA JITO” which will be published
quarterly.

This magazine will turn a new leaf in the way members can connect
with the on-goings of the Chapter. Not only will information be
circulated and awareness disbursed, but this magazine will act as an
engaging medium by ensuring that the voices of members by way of
feedback or suggestions or even blogs are heard and incorporated.
It is in unity and togetherness that we will be able to empower each
other and truly achieve the purpose of JITO.

The NAMMA JITO team is dedicated to deepening connections
between the Chapter and members and between members too.

Let’s connect, let’s share and let’s grow.

JITO BLOG

The Need for International Equity - By Arihant Bardia

The need to invest in Global markets!
For most of us, we go through the same routine day after day, irrespective of the age; you wake up and check the Whatsapp messages,
email, then updates on your other social media accounts like Facebook, Instagram etc and then there are some notifications on the news while
you were sleeping, followed by Twitter updates. You then decide to check the calendar for the meetings lined up. You may also be a little sleepy
because you watched two episodes of your favourite show airing on Netflix.
The point here is that we are consuming data at an exponential rate! Today people have access to over 1.2 million terabytes of data
right at their fingertips. India has already become the highest data consumer in the world (thanks to Jio!) and this is expected to double by
2025 – a 60 times increase from 2015! This, in itself, is an economy, i:e, 1/6th of the world’s population. This trend has swept not just India but
the world at large. The dependency on technology has increased massively and will continue to rise for the coming generations. The millennial
wouldn’t even know how to use a physical map or communicate without an emoji!
Even without the facts mentioned above, you must’ve intuitively known this already but here’s a catch again, “Have you ever thought
about owning a piece of this action!?” Many of these companies are not listed in India but Indians can now easily own these stocks listed
abroad. Yes! You can invest in companies whose services and products you are consuming. You are no longer bound by geography. Indian
investors now have the opportunity to seek offshore equities and increase their global footprint. With rapidly growing markets and
attractive returns on foreign equity, Indians are seeking diversification in their portfolios and adding their skin to the global game.

What do the returns look like on these Tech Investments?
S&P500 is the index of top 500 companies in the US, similar to the BSE 500 in India. For a more dedicated tech exposure, look
towards NASDAQ, the American stock exchange where most of the top technology companies are listed. Over the last decade, both NASDAQ
and S&P500 outperform the Sensex and Nifty (which is even starker after accounting for the depreciation of the INR). It’s not surprising that the
US has the best ecosystem for innovation and a vibrant capital market. It offers exposure to companies that are at the forefront of innovation
and technology, the ones that aren’t available domestically like - Facebook, Amazon, Google, Microsoft, Apple, Nvidia and many more. Just over
the last year, the NASDAQ had outperformed Sensex by 4% and Nifty by over 1%. NASDAQ has continued to provide stronger returns over
ten years beating the Sensex and Nifty by 7% compounded.

Other reasons for Indians to buy USD denominated assets:
A large chunk of an Indian citizen’s spending is linked to the US Dollar (USD), right from the big-ticket overseas education or holidays
to our day to day expenses like petrol, gold, phones and other white goods. USD has remained the gold standard for trading on a global scale
with over 50% of USD held in foreign reserves by banks around the world. Hence, one should obtain USD assets for USD liabilities. Alongside,
they also generate a natural hedge against the depreciating Indian Rupee (INR).
In line with the long-term trend, since the beginning of 2019, the rupee has suffered more than 5% depreciation against the Dollar.
India has not seen a surplus in the current account deficit (CAD) for over 15 years till 2019 and it is fair to assume that INR will maintain its
long-term depreciation trend against the USD (a requirement to maintain parity in real rates).
Investors have started looking at investing in international equities and diversify their holdings – make strategic long-term investments. Global
investments provide investors with the best of both worlds - the developed and the emerging markets and more importantly provide them
with the ability to diversify their risks. They are no longer bound by geography and can now create a centralized global portfolio. Besides,
citizens can now adjust their financial goals for the next generation of “global citizens”. Personally, I notice an inherent need for international
equity in one’s portfolio.

EMBRACE THE CHANGE AND EVALUATE OPTIONS.
