Freedom to communicate is the first step to progress. The success
of any organization majorly lies in its ability to effectively and

comfortably communicate with its members. To bridge this gap while
extending a new hand of inclusivity, the JITO Chennai Chapter has
endeavoured to launch a magazine called “NAMMA JITO” which will
be published quarterly.

Initiated during the pandemic, this magazine shall open up
opportunities for members to connect, integrate and align
themselves better to the on-goings of the Chapter. The magazine
aims to disburse information, spread awareness, become a medium
for members to share their voices, and much more. It is in unity and
togetherness that we will be able to empower each other and grow
phenomenally.

The NAMMA JITO team is dedicated to deepening connections

The Art of Happiness: Dalai Lama and Howard Cutler
Genre: Non-fiction

In this book, the Dalai Lama provides lessons that are
often organized in a Q&A format, posed and translated by
co-author Howard Culter. This book covers all facets of
the human experience, including how to solve everyday
problems so that you can live a happy life along with
how you can remain peaceful during highly stressful and
challenging times. The Art of Happiness is a collaboration
with a psychiatrist, Dr. Howard C. Cutler. It utilizes
Tibetan Buddhist principles to help busy individuals
gain greater balance and spiritual freedom in their lives.
Therefore, in one sentence, the summary of this book can
be, “Happiness is the purpose of all existence”. Few key
learnings of this book can be:
• Kindness being a default state:
Humans are inherently kind, warm and gentle. Negative
emotions like ego, hatred, and arrogance are acquired
traits and are what the Dalai Lama calls, ‘secondary
emotions’. When we appeal to people with this inherent
knowledge, we appeal to their kinder self.
• Suffering and how we deal with it:
What we expect from life decides how we deal with
suffering. Quoting from the book – “I think how you
perceive life as a whole plays a role in your attitude
about suffering. For instance, if your basic outlook is that
suffering is negative and must be avoided at all costs and
in some sense, is a sign of failure, this will add a distinct
psychological component of anxiety and intolerance when
you encounter difficult circumstances, a feeling of being
overwhelmed. On the other hand, if your basic outlook
accepts that suffering is a natural part of your existence,
this will undoubtedly make you more tolerant towards
the adversion of life. And without a certain degree of tolerance towards your suffering, your life becomes
miserable; then it’s like having a very bad night. That night seems eternal; it never seems to end.
• Guilt and its futility –
The Dalai Lama talks about how we should feel sorry about our mistakes but not let the guilt take over. Feeling
bad and learning from your mistake is one thing while beating yourself up is another. He believes that guilt is
unnecessary and does more harm than good, from a learning point of view. It is important that we carry regret
with grace.

“I have found that the greatest degree of inner tranquility comes from the development of love
and compassion. The more we care for the happiness of others, the greater is our own sense of
well-being. Cultivating a close, warmhearted feeling for others automatically puts the mind at
ease. It is the ultimate source of success in life.” - The Dalai Lama

This book is thoroughly recommended and is a must read.
