Welcome

DUSS is proud to welcome medical students and junior doctors from across the UK to
our inaugural conference; “Inspiring the surgeons of Tomorrow”. We are extremely
grateful for all students and junior doctors who have taken their time to attend our
conference.
We are particularly grateful to the following clinicians who have taken time from
their busy schedules to share their knoweldge and experience from their surgical
careers with us.

Aim of the conference

The conference will focus on the challenges and opportunities available for a sur-
geon of the future. We aim to expose medical students and junior doctors to basic
surgical techniques and skills through our talks and workshops. We hope that you
enjoy the day, and that the experience will increase the appeal of choosing a surgical
speciality as your career choice.

Professor Caroline MacEwen

Honorary Professor of Ophthalmology

United Kingdom

Professor Caroline MacEwen is the Head of the Ophthal-
mology Department at the University of Dundee (Honorary
Professor) and President of the Royal College of Ophthal-
mologists (2014 – 2017).

Her clinical interests lie in the field of strabismus and ocular
mo�lity a�er carrying out her subspecialty training at
Moorfields Eye Hospital. Research interests include paedi-
atric naso-lacrimal disease, trauma, sports medicine, epide-
miology and clinical research on strabismus management.
She has been a member of the Bri�sh Ophthalmic Surveil-
lance Unit (BOSU) commi�ee since its incep�on. Interna-
�onal and na�onal awards for her work include the Gregg
medal for ‘contribu�on to medical science’, the Founder’s
Cup, Ian Fraser trophy, Spencer Walker prize and Foulds’
trophy. She has published more than 130 papers, wri�en or
edited 3 textbooks and wri�en 17 book chapters.

Mr Rodney Mountain

Mr Rodney Mountain is a pioneering surgeon striving to
create an environment that combines, health care and
design.

He has a special interest in design, and works to combine
his surgical experience with technology and art. His recent
research has included "Elas�cated surgical retrac�on”. This
technology increases the surgeons visual field in a simple
and less invasive technique. He has also worked with medi-
cal art students from the Duncan of Jordanstone College of
Art and Design and produced a comic book strip to help
engage pa�ents and aid their understanding of surgical pro-
cedures.

He has played a leading role in the Academic health science
partnership (AHSP) in Tayside and has introduced "Health-
care Design and innova�on" which a�empts to bridge the
gap between healthcare and the design and technology in-
dustry.

Professor Sir Alfred Cuschieri

Pioneer of Keyhole Surgery
Chief Scien�fic Advisor

Technology (IMSaT)
University of Dundee

Professor Sir Cuschieri, of the eponymous Cuschieri Skills
Centre, is recognised across the world for his pioneering
work in minimally invasive surgery.

His career has had a significant impact on surgical prac�ce
throughout the world, allowing the transi�on from open to
minimal access surgery. His seminal research has led to the
development of many techniques, s�ll commonly used in
surgical prac�ce. Sir Cuschieri has contributed to over 530
original ar�cles in peer reviewed journals, work which has
won him numerous prizes, including: the gold medal from
the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, and the
Queen’s award for higher and con�nued educa�on. He has
held appointments as the president of the Bri�sh Associa-
�on of Surgical Oncology, the Interna�onal Hepatobiliary
pancrea�c associa�on and the European Associa�on of En-
doscopic Surgeons.

Sir Cuschieri is presently the European Editor-in-Chief of
Surgical Endoscopy, and sits on the editorial board of no
less than 10 peer reviewed journals.

SURGICAL SOCIETY FOunder’s award

DUSS Undergraduate Conference: Inspiring the surgeons of
tomorrow, has accepted high quality abstracts for poster
presenta�on in conten�on for the Founder’s Award. The
Founder’s Award is awarded to the medical student who
presented the best research poster at the society’s
conference, as judged by the faculty on the day. The winner
of the Founder’s Award will receive a cash prize of £125 and
£75 for first runner up.

This award is made possible by the generous dona�on from
Mr Adarsh Babber, who founded Dundee University
Surgical Society in 2004.
