We praise God Almighty for the blessing so that this book Bahasa Inggris XI
can be finished well.
Education is one of the conscious and systematic efforts in developing the
potency of the students and also the effort of the society and nation in preparing the
young generation for the sustainability of the better social and national life in the
future. That sustainability is marked by the bequest of the national culture and
character which has been owned by the society and nation for the young generation.
Besides, the development process of national culture and character is enhancing the
quality of social and national life in the future. A variety of efforts for the education
development on national culture and character has been done in various
government institutions, especially in various units of the Ministry of National
Education. Those development efforts are related to the various levels and programs
of education, even though it is not yet comprehensive.
Concerning on those reasons, we present this book as a joint effort to help the
bequest and the process of developing national culture and character for the
students. Using well-arranged materials, varied tasks, and integrated character
values, as well as activities which can ignite creativity, so it is expected to be able to
motivate the students to be more active and creative.
Don’t forget to keep studying and praying diligently, respect and obey your

Students, have you written a letter before? Why did you write the letter? There are many reasons to
write letters. Writing letters allows us to keep in touch with people we love, and it means so much when
they send something in return. Nowadays, people can easily communicate and send messages
through their cell phone. It is very simple and quick, isn’t it? However, sending letters has different
meaning for some reasons. Handwritten letters often expressing strong feelings between the sender
and the receiver. It also let us take our time in understanding the whole message and think about the
responses.
In this chapter, we are going to learn about how to write personal letters, its structure, and how
we process the message to make a reply. First of all, let’s thank God for the chance to learn English
today and pray for His guidance so that we can learn the materials well. All right, let’s begin the lesson
now!

Personal Letter
• Personal letter is a letter that is personally written and sent by a person to another person or
to a certain institution or organization.

• Personal letters can be divided into two broad categories, based on the intended recipient:
person-to-person letters and person-to-business letters.
• Person-to-person letters are letters that one individual sends to another individual that deal
with personal matters, as opposed to business matters. The model of person-to-person
letter can be: character reference letter, condolence letter, friendly letter, goodbye letter,
love letter, letter of apology, letter of complaint, letter of congratulations, letter of personal
reference, letter of thanks, letter of sympathy, letter of welcome, teacher to parents, letter
of resignation from a committee.
• Person-to-business letters are letters that individuals send to businesses or institutions or
that deal with matters related to some type of business relationship between the two
parties. The model of person-to-business letters can be: acceptance letter, application
letter, complains letter, commendation letter, cover letter, financial hardship letter, financial
information letter, hardship letter, thank you letter, introduction letter, etc.

say, I really envy you getting that Tokyo gig with the company. Somehow they overlooked me on
that one and I am forced to slug it out here through another frigid and snowy Montreal winter. Brrrr!
I heard through the grapevine that business is going well there. Rumor has it that you guys are
just about to close a big deal with the Japanese government for an M-750 Simulator. Great news!
Good for the company and good for you. Keep up the great work!
Did you hear about Margie Bronson suddenly leaving the company just before year-end? It was
a bit of a shock to say the least. She gave one week's notice and was gone. Nobody knows for
sure what's up with her but rumors have been flying fast and furious that she went through a bit of a
personal meltdown and has now gone underground to lick her wounds for a while. There could be
some truth to that since her long time relationship ended recently and three months ago she was
passed over for that director position that was up for grabs. I'll keep you posted when we find out
more.
As for me, I am quite busy these days on the Branscombe Systems Project. We are entering
Phase Two now, and that is expected to run for three years, at least. Frank Schindler is Senior
Project Manager and I am Team Leader of the Embedded Systems Group. I am enjoying it so far.
Whether I'll feel the same way in three years, I'm not sure. By then I might be ready to join you in
Japan.
I'm still kicking butt in the squash court and am managing to get in two or three matches per
week. What about squash in Japan? Have you been able to play any over there? Are there even
any squash courts? I suppose since you are in Tokyo there must be some. Let me know.
I have to go now and attend to family duties. Jonathon needs some help with his homework and
Angie wants me to fix something in the kitchen. You single guys traveling the world sure are lucky!
Keep me posted whenever you can. I really enjoy receiving your letters and getting the details of

Cause and Effect

Cause and effect is a form of reasoning to reach valid conclusion. These are conjunctions used
to show cause and effect.

Could Jupiter have been a star instead of a planet? Jupiter is the fifth planet from the Sun and
the biggest planet in our solar system. More than 1.300 planets the size of Earth could fit inside
Jupiter. If you could lump together all eight of the other planet in the solar system, the resulting
planet would still be smaller than Jupiter! In some ways, Jupiter is more like a star than a planet.
Like the sun and other stars, Jupiter is a huge ball of hydrogen gas and helium gas. It gives off
more heat than it receives from the sun. Many moons and several thin rings go around Jupiter.
Jupiter’s moons and rings are like a little solar system.
Our solar system formed from a big cloud of gas and dust. The sun formed at the centre. The
sun sucked in gas and got bigger and bigger and hotter and hotter. Finally, it was big enough and
hot enough to become a star and shine. Jupiter formed the same way. But Jupiter never got big
and not enough to become a star like our Sun. There was not enough gas in the solar system to
make two stars. Jupiter is more like a star that failed.
You could never land a spacecraft on Jupiter. Jupiter does not have a hard surface.
Astronomers (scientists who study space) call Jupiter a gas giant because it’s made almost entirely
of gas. From space, Jupiter looks striped. The stripes are actually bands of coloured clouds that
circle the planet. The clouds near the top of the atmosphere are bathed in deadly radiation.
Jupiter’s highest clouds are also very cold. The clouds get hotter deeper down. Strong winds blow
in opposite directions in each and of clouds. In one band, the winds blow toward the east. In the
next band, they blow toward the west.
Big storms rage in the clouds around Jupiter. The biggest storm is called the Giant Red Spot.
Three planets the size of Earth could fit across the Great Red Spot. This storm may have lasted for
hundreds of years.
Deeper into the planet, the gas gets thicker and receiver. It gets so heavy that some of it gets
squeezed into a layer of liquid hydrogen. Astronomers think that there might be some rock and
metal in the centre, or core of Jupiter.
Jupiter has more moons than any other planet in our solar system. About 400 years ago,
Italian astronomer Galileo Galilei turned a telescope to the sky and discovered moons going
around Jupiter. The four biggest moons are the ones that Galileo discovered. Astronomers call
them the Galilean satellites. Their names are lo, Ganymede, Europa and Callisto. Io is covered with
volcanoes. Many of the volcanoes on lo are active, which means they are erupting or might erupt
again someday. Io has more volcanoes than any other planet or moon.
Ganymede is the biggest moon in our solar system. It is even bigger than the planets Mercury
and Pluto! Europa and Callisto are covered with ice. Astronomers think that enormous oceans of
water may lie under the ice. The rings around Jupiter are thin, dark and hard to see. They are
made of rock and tiny bits of dust.
The ancient Romans named the planet after Jupiter, their chief god, because it shines so
brightly in the night sky. In the early 1600s, Galileo become the first person to study Jupiter with a
telescope. He helped prove that Jupiter and all the planets go around the sun. Before then,
astronomers thought that the sun, others stars, and all the planets went around earth. Today,
astronomers use much more powerful telescopes to look at Jupiter and other objects in space.
Several spacecraft have visited Jupiter. The first, in 1972, was Pioneer 10. Cameras on the
spacecraft took pictures of Jupiter. Instruments on the spacecraft made measurements of planet. In
1994, astronomers watched a comet crash into Jupiter. Jupiter’s gravity tore the comet apart as the

comet got close. Pieces of the comet smashed into Jupiter’s atmosphere. The impacts caused
huge explosions. Powerful winds on Jupiter then blew the remains of the comet away.

Hello, students. How are you today? Have you ever wondered how a certain phenomenon happen?
Look at the picture! There is a kid watching the rain outside. Can you guess what the kid is thinking
while watching it? Yes, she probably wonder about the rain, where it comes from and how it happens.
Now, have you ever heard about explanation text? Yes, it is a text purposed to explain about
something. It can be about natural phenomenon, social issues, etc. What else do you know about it?
Let’s talk about it in this chapter. Students, in this chapter you will also learn about passive voice? It’s
okay if you do not know yet, that is why we are going to learn about them today.
Okay, students. Before starting our lesson, let’s pray to God for the chance to learn English today

Passive Voice
Passive voice is a style of writing where would be the object of a sentence becomes the
subject of the sentence. The passive voice occurs when something that is ordinarily “done by”
the subject of a sentence is “done by” the object of a sentence. In the passive writing voice,
whatever is doing the action of the sentence is not the grammatical subject of the sentence.
Pay attention to the patterns is the table below:
