G reetings from East Delta University (EDU)!

U niversities are institutions of learning through higher standard of research, writing

and intellectual mentoring. The hallmark view of the academic profession since its
inception was that human knowledge is a never-ending pursuit of the truth; that there is
no humanly accessible truth that is not in principle open to challenge; and that no party,
ruler or intellectual faction can be assumed to have a monopoly or absolute control on
wisdom. Therefore, learning is most likely to thrive in an environment of intellectual
diversity that protects and fosters independence of thought and speech leading to
enrichment of individuals and social lives.

B ased on the principle of academic freedom, EDU opens its doors to those young

men and women of the 21st century who will be ready to provide leadership to the
community, society, nation and global community. As a dynamic, diverse, not-for-profit
independent private institution, EDU is dedicated to providing high quality educational
programs of distinction and preparing students for lifelong learning and leadership
roles in business and other professions, by attaining excellence in curriculum, faculties,
research, facilities and job placements which are the hallmark of the institution.

B eing aware of the current tendency to go abroad seeking quality education, this

institution is conveniently located at home in the port city of Chittagong which is the
commercial capital of Bangladesh.

E ast Delta University is a degree granting university offering both undergraduate and

post graduate degrees and approved by the government under the Private University
Act of Bangladesh. It is governed by the Chittagong Foundation.

We hope you will join us in our quest for lifelong learning and fulfilment through

Master of
Arts in English

Objective & Philosophy

The recent two decades have witnessed a significant upsurge of job opportunities for students holding a

tertiary-level degree in English, an ever-increasing number of colleges and universities, in outsourcing sectors, in
marketing jobs and, of course, in banking sectors. A student, who can communicate in fluent English, both in
written and spoken form, is considered to possess better opportunities in every walk of life – be it professional,
social, or economic. With a view to instilling into students a firm confidence garnered from critical thinking,
analytical musing, persistent translation and, above all, in-depth research, East Delta University has launched MA
in English, a two-year program (one year as MA Preliminary and another as MA Final) with a strong hope that this
program will open new vistas of job opportunities for the learners. The courses of the syllabus focus on creative
and critical texts written in and translated into English that will enable students to re-examine and analyze
critically, in a comparative frame, literary manuscripts, locations, agencies, productions and history of the
reception of the texts. The syllabus aims to expose students to the richness and variety of English Literature in
all its genres chronologically, from Geoffrey Chaucer to W. H. Auden, Shakespeare to Beckett, Daniel Defoe to
Thomas Hardy. Apart from the concentration on literature, the syllabus includes applied linguistics, classroom
applications, the teaching of communicative skills, drilling translation skills, and ELT as core focuses on honing the
learners’ language skills and interview skills and thus giving career orientation to the syllabus.

Why study MA in English?

English graduates have a wide array of professional choices, including education, journalism, documentation

and public relation, marketing, communication, and management. Both the public and the private sectors
require people with a sound command over English since the graduates have excellent communicative skills,
research and analytical knowledge, and creative and evaluative understanding. In a global context, our
graduates will always have the upper hand since EDU strictly follows international standards in terms of quality,
educational management, and outcome.
