Message from The First Minister of Scotland,
Nicola Sturgeon.
As we go to print, there are real concern’s that The Euros 2020 matches, that are due to be hosted at
Hampden in June, could be moved by UEFA to another country if they do not receive the necessary
guarantees that fans will be allowed to attend.
First minister Nicola Sturgeon explains:
“There’s a deadline by which all countries have to get an indication to UEFA about what they think will be
possible in terms of fan attendance and fan zones. “All countries are grappling with this, not just Scotland.
While we’re really hopeful that we can be optimistic, looking too far ahead is difficult to do. “Let me be very
clear, we are absolutely intent on having the Euros, having Hampden as one of the host stadiums, particularly
so we can see Scotland play at Hampden as well. “Can I say that while nothing in a global pandemic can
be certain when you’re looking far into the future, I very much want and hope to be one of the Tartan Army
fans cheering on Scotland at Hampden later in the year. Let’s keep our eyes on that prize. “My final point is
that we all have got a part to play in making it possible. “We haven’t waited so long to see Scotland play in
a major tournament to not do absolutely everything we can to ensure there are going to be fans there to
cheer the team on.”

16 Looking forward to the World Cup Qualifiers
For the first time since we started this magazine way back in 2005, I can at last say on behalf of everyone
involved in the magazine the iconic words “We’ve qualified”, and what a truly great feeling that is.
Like the rest of the country I was sitting at home watching the final Euro qualifier
game unfold in Serbia as the team performed heroics to get that winning result. It
should have been over in 90 minutes but that would be far to straight forward for
Scotland, wouldn’t it? So after surviving a nervy extra time the team went on to
score five out of five penalties leaving the stage set for David Marshall to heroically
save the last penalty to set the nation wild with delight.
Although we were all stuck at home due to the pandemic, social media ensured that Marshall: Can I boogie ref?
we could join in and watch fellow fans celebrate along with the team. The behind Ref: yes sir, you can boogie
the scenes Scotland team celebrations soon went viral as we partied the night away.
‘Yes sir, we can boogie’ overnight became the new tartan army anthem. Lets hope
we can sing that inside stadiums in the not too distant future.
Before these finals in June, we have three World Cup qualifying games coming up
and as usual we would like to wish Steve Clarke and the boys the best of luck.
Finally, as always, thank you to all who have contributed to this edition.

So who is Stuart McLaren?
After Shelley stepped down Stuart McLaren was appointed Scotland Women’s
National Team Interim Head Coach.
Following the departure of Shelley Kerr, the Scottish FA National Youth Team coach
has taken charge whilst the SFA continues its recruitment process for a permanent
Head Coach. McLaren enjoyed a 14-year playing career, featuring for clubs in
Australia, Scotland, Hong Kong and Malaysia. He also worked in the Queensland
Academy of Sport’s women’s football programme. Stuart took charge of Stirling
Albion in 2014 after retiring from Perth Glory and joined the association as Coach
Education & Development Manager in 2016, during which time he successfully
completed his UEFA Pro Licence.
McLaren was appointed as National Youth Team coach in 2018 – leading the Scotland Under-16s to their Victory
Shield win in 2019 – and has mentored many of the women’s national team players through their coach education
journeys. Stuart McLaren said: “I am delighted to be given the opportunity to lead the women’s national team on
an interim basis as the squad look to refocus and set their sights on competing at a major tournament once again.
“The team were obviously incredibly disappointed not to qualify for the Euros but now we have the chance to
ensure we end the campaign on a high and bring back the feel good factor surrounding the squad before the new
Head Coach is appointed. “The women’s team have done incredibly well over the last few years, inspiring a nation
and I am excited about being given the opportunity to make a positive impact in the short time I have with the
squad, providing the players with the necessary support and guidance.”

The Scottish Football Supporters Association are the only independent national body of fans who
work voluntarily on behalf of everyday fans from right across Scotland. Founded 6 years ago this
coming April, the SFSA have 2 simple objectives:
• To represent and present fans views to give fans a voice
• To promote Scottish Football and help the game to grow and develop
Over the last 6 years the SFSA have continued to work on behalf of the fans, conducting research on
a number of topics in order to understand how fans feel and what issues are most important to them.
Such research includes:
• Gambling in Scottish Football (in association with BeGambleAware)
• Thoughts on community ownership
• The impact of covid 19 on fans
• Youth football
• And more
The SFSA also provide fans a chance to speak to high profile guests every month and allow them to
discuss important issues within Scottish Football. So far, these guests include:
• Sir Keir Starmer
• Ian Blackford
• Tom English
• Darryl Broadfoot
• Douglas Ross
More guests will be lined up soon, some of whom will also be appearing at our upcoming Fans Con-
ference at the 30th of May. This will allow us to highlight key events and findings over the 12 months
and present our plans for the future, with speakers, guests and events included too.
If you would like to join the other 76,000 fans, whether that be individually or with a supporter’s
group such as the Well Society, the Albion Rovers Supporters Trust, Thistle Forever and others then
you can do so by visiting: www.scottishfsa.org/reclaimthegame/
By signing up, fans become ever stronger as our collective number grows which will have more influ-
ence on those who run our game. You will also receive a weekly newsletter featuring the top stories
from across the game all in one place, including creative pieces from SFSA resident writer Donald
Stewart and a summary of the key events form Scotland and elsewhere from our chairman Andy
Smith which is becoming a must read for fans every Friday!
You can find Andy’s latest “Sting in the Tale” at:
