Module 1: The Science Laboratory, Glassware, Tools and
Equipment, other Materials, and Safety Practices

Hi girls!
Welcome to Module 1. Here, we are going to learn the exciting preliminary
concepts that are important in understanding the different lessons for the
three terms this school year.
These are:

✅ Science Laboratory Glassware, and Tools or Equipment
✅ Safety Practices in the Science Laboratory

Goals of the Subject: To deliberately develop in the students the capacity to do scientific

thinking, critical thinking, and problem-solving real life situations.

At the end of this module, you will be able to:
1. Identify and familiarize the use and function of the laboratory glassware, tools or
equipment.
2. Demonstrate safety actions inside the science lab or when doing experiments at
home.

Essential Questions
1. Why is it necessary to know the name and purpose or function of the laboratory
glassware, and tools or equipment?
2. Why is safety important at all times in the laboratory?

Science Laboratory Glassware, Equipment and other Materials

Take a look at the pictures below. Can you recognize them?
Did you write or draw something similar to these ?

5/17 Key Concept 1:
These are
called
laboratory
glassware,
tools and
equipment.
They are the
materials that
the researchers
or scientists
use to conduct
scientific
investigations.

*Not all
laboratory
galssware and
equipment are
found in this
image.

Thank you for trying your best to draw and come up with answers which are
most likely the same as the images .

Know by heart the names of each glassware or equipment. When we know
their names, it will help us a lot in our future activities in the science lab or
even at home.

The Safety Practices in the Science Lab

Great! Yes, you are right. We have to be mindful with our
actions. We have to stay focused. We have to be cautious at
all times when we are inside the laboratory to avoid
accidents. Remember that...

Take a look at the poster on how we should act or behave inside the laboratory
to make sure that safety is our priority. Know and understand these by heart.
Remember, our lives matter more than anything!

The Safety Practices in the Science Lab

In the previous page, you read about the Lab
Safety Rules. You encountered the word ‘hazard’.
What does it mean?

Yes, hazard
means danger.

Safety Symbols

Lab procedures and equipment
may be labeled with safety
symbols.

These symbols warn of specific
hazards, such as flames or
broken glass.

Learn the symbols so you will
recognize the dangers as well as
learn how to avoid them. Many
common safety symbols are
shown .

Note: No need to memorize these symbols.

Do you know how you can avoid these hazards?

Wearing protective gear or personal protective equipment is one way to avoid many
hazards in science. For example, to avoid being burned by hot objects, use hot mitts
or gloves to protect your hands. To avoid eye hazards, such as harsh liquids splashed
into the eyes, wear safety goggles. These are just among the few safety reminders.
