CIA INTERNATIONAL SEMINAR AT A GLANCE

The Coaching in Action (CIA) International Seminar is an avenue for coaches to learn
more about specific areas of coaching or keep abreast of new developments in the
field. It is in line with the Ministry’s aspiration, shift 6 in the Malaysian Education
Blueprint (MEB) 2013 – 2025, to create quality schools and enhance student outcomes
through continuous guidance and support by the State Education Department and
District Education Office under the District Transformation Programme (DTP).

Therefore, it is crucial for every officer in the State Education Department and District
Education Office to be able to coach schools for improvement. This Seminar is
designed to be informational or educational to give opportunities for targeted
participants to be well equipped with the latest trends in coaching, specifically for
school improvement.

The objectives of this seminar are:
to increase knowledge and skills of targeted participants to coach for school
improvement.
to promote best practices from the Trust Schools Programme to achieve quality
school and enhance student outcomes.

Targeted participants are:
School Improvement Partners+ (SIPartners+)
School Improvement Specialist Coaches+ (SISC+)
FasiLINUS
Officers of the State Education Department and District Education Office
Principals / Headmasters / School Leaders
Middle Leaders
Instructional Coaches

It is hoped that the participants will benefit from this seminar, improving their skills as
coaches for school improvement.

Foreword

DIRECTOR
SABAH STATE EDUCATION DEPARTMENT

Assalamualaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh.

I would like to extend a warm welcome to all the participants of the Coaching in Action
(CIA) International Seminar 2018. I would like to thank the Papar District Education
Office for hosting this three-day event, which focuses on the theme Coaching in Action
for School Improvement. This is the first CIA International Seminar to be organised
here in Sabah which targeted at 150 participants from all over Malaysia. We also would
love to thank the Trust Schools and the LeapEd Education Lead and Advisor of the
Kimanis Cluster, who hail from Finland and South Africa, to make this event even more
special.

This seminar was first initiated by the School Improvement Specialist Coaches +
(SISC+) of Papar District Education Office which aimed at developing their knowledge
and skills as instructional coaches, to better serve their clients. Soon, this initiative was
supported by the Sabah State Education Department, specifically the School
Management Sector with the hope of promoting best practices of the Trust School
Programme in Sabah which is now currently in their third year of operation.

I believe that this timely event will benefit all participants to improve on their knowledge
and skills to be effective coaches. The organiser has outlined a three-day event full of
information and workshops from experts in the coaching field, programme assessment
and evaluation, as well as sharing from the Trust Schools Senior Leadership Team,
Middle Leaders Team and Students Voice Groups.

I trust that throughout this three-day seminar, collaborations, cooperation,
partnerships and sharing of success stories and best practices in the coaching field
will chart the way forward for us to transform schools and enhance student outcomes.

For all participants of the CIA International Seminar 2018, I hope that this event has
been a fruitful learning experience.

YBHG. DATUK HAJAH MAIMUNAH BINTI HAJI SUHAIBUL

Foreword

DEPUTY EDUCATION OFFICER
PAPAR DISTRICT EDUCATON OFFICE

Greetings to all.

A very warm welcome to all the participants of the Coaching in Action (CIA)
International Seminar 2018. On behalf of my team, I would like to extend my gratitude
to all of you who made the decision to attend this seminar and grow as experts in the
coaching field. Coaching Seminar in Malaysia is still at its infancy. As the team of
coaches grow, we find that the platform for them to gain knowledge and skills, as well
as sharing of coaching ideas are very limited in our country. Hence, the idea of
organising the first ever Coaching in Action (CIA) Seminar in Malaysia.

The theme for this year’s seminar is Coaching in Action for School Improvement. This
theme is apt and timely as we move forward to transform schools and create a culture
for continuous improvement. Coaching skills are crucial in guiding school
transformation and fostering continuous cycle of improvement as we empower them
to enhance student outcomes as aspired in the Malaysian Education Blueprint (MEB)
2013 – 2025.

Papar District Education Office is honoured to host this three-day Seminar, which is
an avenue for all coaches, officers, school leaders and middle leaders who are
involved with coaching for school improvement to share success stories, best
practices and gain knowledge and skills from the experts in the field. I believe that
through this seminar, we will be able to develop ourselves professionally and
strengthen our roles as coaches for the schools in our states and districts.

This seminar is also a platform for professional networking and sharing of knowledge
and expertise among coaches. I am sure that the partnerships and collaborations that
we formed throughout this seminar will benefit all participants and positively impacts
our coaching practices.

It is my sincere hope that ideas and skills garnered from this seminar be disseminated
to all back home as a way of strengthening and transforming our schools for better
student outcomes.

With that, I wish all of you a rewarding and successful learning journey throughout this
three-day seminar.

HENRY KENNETH LAWRENCE
