A fascinating creature, in form or in spirit the

panther is everywhere. When Louis Cartier
imagined his first panther decor in 1914, only a
handful of people knew he had taken his
inspiration from Jeanne Toussaint, or “la
panthère” as she was known. The jeweller's
enlightened muse, this woman of impeccable
taste sported bobbed hair, endless strands of
pearls and a cigarette-holder held defiantly high.
She also nurtured a passion for this most
graceful of felines. Crouched, standing, poised to
pounce, the panther appears in multiple poses…

Cartier returns to this theme for a collection of
powerful and audacious eyewear in which the
panther becomes the true emblem of triumphant
sensuality.

She is Mexican, hypnotic and infinitely seductive:

María Félix, La Doña, is an emblematic figure at
Cartier.

The high jewellery creations she commissioned from
Cartier in the 1970s were as unique as the actress
herself, and would go down in the jeweller's history.

In 2006, Cartier dedicated a collection of watches,
jewellery and accessories to its extravagant muse. The
style of La Doña de Cartier precious eyewear, with the
almost reptilian link shape of the hinges, is also
inspired by the crocodiles that form the legendary
necklace made for María Félix in 1975.
