General Information

v All children are asked to attend school on time to foster good habits of punctuality. The
registration period is between 9am and 9.05am. A record is kept of those instances where
a child arrives late at school. We also kindly ask you to collect your children at the end of
the afternoon on time, so that we can continue with after school activities, meetings,
training, after school clubs, practices, etc. immediately.

v Could you please phone the school before 9 am if your child will be absent. The school
requests that parents kindly forward a letter on the return of your child explaining
reason of absence. If we are not informed your child will be marked as unauthorised
absence.

v The school will take further action in the event of concerns being raised about the above
mentioned.

v It is recommended that children’s clothing be clearly labelled in order to try and avoid
losing them. If possible, could the children in Miss Bryan’s class have extra clothes in
their bags please (e.g. trousers, socks and underwear)

v Fruit is sold daily at 20p (£1 to be paid on Monday), with year 6 pupils responsible for the
shop. Or you are welcome to send a piece of fruit into school with your child.

v Could you please send dinner money into school in an envelope with the name of your child
written on it (Monday morning). Dinner money to be posted in the post box inside the
reception area.

v Sweets, chewing gum and snacks such as biscuits and chocolate are forbidden in school.
v Infants are prohibited from bringing toys and pencil cases to school, as the children get

upset if something happens to their property. Sufficient resources are provided for the
children in class, and this helps them to appreciate the importance of sharing with others.
v For safety reasons during playtime, PE lessons, and generally in class, no jewellery should
be worn, and we advise that children tie their hair up.
v We kindly ask you not to park in front of private entrances, the main entrance, or turn
around in them. The lay-by outside the school needs to be kept clear between 3pm and
3.20pm in order to allow buses to park. No vehicle should enter the school grounds.

www.brobrynach.amdro.org.uk 01994 448268 [email protected]

v It is the parents’ responsibility to inspect your child's hair for head lice and to treat it
appropriately.

v If your child is ill with flu-like symptoms, please ensure that you keep him/her home until
recovered.

v No glass bottles are to be brought to school.
v Five INSET and Transition days are held during this academic year, in accordance with

WAG recommendations.

Applying for School Places / Admissions

Applications should be made for a child to start school well in advance. If a child is due to
start in January, April or September, application should be made by 31st January of the
previous year. Forms are available on our school website or by clicking this link below.

https://www.carmarthenshire.gov.wales/home/council-services/education-schools/school-admissions-
changing-schools/apply-for-a-primary-school-place/#.XXo6LUdJk2o

The Council through its Admissions Manager must direct Governing Bodies, and through
them the headteachers, to make it clear to parents that when an out-of-catchment
child is admitted to any school that it may have an implication when the child transfers
to secondary education. It does not follow that admission to a primary school
automatically allows admission to the catchment secondary; it is the home address of
the pupil which is the determining factor. Parental feedback during the Admission
Appeals process suggests that there are cases where this information is not made clear
at the outset.

Attendance Policy

Designated staff member with responsibility for monitoring attendance:
Mr Mathew Lemon
Deputy staff members with responsibility for monitoring attendance:
Mrs Diane Jones (Teacher Centre Clerk)
Nominated member of the governing body for monitoring attendance:
Mr Peter Walton
Named officer within the Local Authority:
Bethan James
Contact number: 01267 246534
Email: [email protected]

Rationale

§ The school bases its attendance policy on the guidelines as set out by the ERW
Consortium.

§ Whilst the legal responsibility for regular school attendance rests with parents, the
school shares with them, and the local authority (LA), responsibility for encouraging
good attendance and improving poor attendance.

§ The school is required by law to maintain specific records and to produce specified
information on the attendance of pupils.

§ Statutory obligation apart, the school is committed to improvements in attendance
standards as a direct stimulus to raising pupil achievement.

§ Poor attendance is destructive of educational achievement, undermines the well-being
of each pupil and demoralises staff.

§ The LA has a statutory duty to ensure that a child for whom they are responsible is
receiving suitable education and, if a registered pupil at school, this means attending
school regularly and on time.

www.brobrynach.amdro.org.uk 01994 448268 [email protected]

Objectives

§ To promote good attendance as this is vital to educational achievement.
§ To convey clearly to parents and pupils that:

o regular attendance is essential;
o unauthorised absence and persistent lateness is not acceptable;
o only the headteacher in the context of the law can approve absence;
o parental condoned, unjustifiable absence will be investigated and will be

recorded as unauthorised absence.
§ To keep records of attendance which:

o clearly distinguish between authorised and unauthorised absence by pupils;
o provide accurate information on actual attendance to enable monitoring and

evaluation of school attendance rates through centrally held statistics.
§ To build on existing good practice that fosters a positive attitude to good

attendance by:
o responding rapidly to pupil absence;
o recognising pupils who maintain ‘excellent’, ‘good’ and ‘improving’ attendance
records.

§ To be sensitive to situations where regular attendance patterns are disrupted by
external factors such as family bereavement.

The Designated Member of Staff

Attendance is the responsibility of all staff. There is, however, a designated member of
staff for attendance matters and all staff are able to discuss individual pupil attendance
with this person. The Designated Member of Staff for Attendance:

• monitors the school’s registers;
• liaises with teaching staff, in particular Heads of Year;
• meets with the LA Officer on a regular pre-arranged basis;
• refers to other agencies if appropriate;
• refers to the school nurse if there are doubts about the validity of an illness;
• oversees the use of standardised letters to parents addressing specific aspects of

attendance and requiring parental response,
• arranges for an attendance meeting in the case of repeated, unexplained absences

(school will consider inviting the named governor for attendance to such a meeting);
• ensures that the LA Officer’s role is known and understood in school.

www.brobrynach.amdro.org.uk 01994 448268 [email protected]

Responsibility of Parents

Parents are responsible in law for ensuring that their children attend the school at which
they are registered, regularly, on time, properly dressed and in a fit condition to learn
(parents are also responsible for ensuring that their children stay at school once they have
registered).
Parents can do a great deal to support the regular and punctual attendance of their children.
Parents should:

a) take an active interest in their child’s school life and work;
b) attend parents’ evenings and other school events, if possible;
c) ensure that their child completes his/her homework and goes to bed at an

appropriate time;
d) be aware of letters from school which their child brings home;
e) ensure that their child arrives at school on time each day;

f) ensure that their child only misses school for reasons which are unavoidable or
justified, such as illness or days of religious observance;

g) always notify the school as soon as possible - preferably on the first morning - of any
absence;

h) confirm this in writing when the child returns to school;
i) avoid booking family holidays during term-time;
j) talk to the school if they are concerned that their child may be reluctant to attend.

www.brobrynach.amdro.org.uk 01994 448268 [email protected]

Lateness
A pupil’s punctuality is a legal requirement and the parent of a pupil who is persistently late is
guilty of an offence. The law treats persistent lateness in the same way as irregular
attendance and parents can be prosecuted if persistent late arrival is not resolved.
Holidays
Headteachers do have the discretionary power to grant leave for the purpose of a family
holiday or trips. However, the ERW Consortium is strongly advising that any holidays or day
trips in term time should be unauthorised, and that there should be no exceptions to this
policy. The school adheres to this and family holidays during term time will not be authorised.

relationships. The methodology of presenting the curriculum is adapted according to needs.
The inclusion, accessibility and additional learning needs policies are available in school.

Health and Safety Arrangements

The Headteacher regularly undertakes a risk assessment of the school premisesto ensure
that it is maintained in good condition. Any necessary repairs are carried out immediately.
Each educational visit ouside school is also subject to a risk assessment.
A fire drill is held each term. The fire alarm system is checked on a regular basis, the fire
extinguishers are regularly serviced and a fire officer undertakes a fire risk assessment.
Staff are trained in the use of fire extinguishers.

www.brobrynach.amdro.org.uk 01994 448268 [email protected]

The school premises are in good condition and bounded by a secure fence.

Head Lice

We occasionally have reoccurrences of head lice in our school. School nurses no longer check children’s
hair so the responsibility falls on the home to check and to eradicate the problem.

To eradicate the problem everyone has to co-operate.

Comb for lice, parting hair in small sections, and return from time to time to areas you’ve already covered
just to make sure.

Where to look:

• Close to the scalp
• Behind the ears
• Back of the neck
• Top of the head
• Under the fringe

Check your child’s hair every week and treat immediately if any live lice are discovered.

Concerns

If parents have concerns about any aspect of the school, including the curriculum, they
should, in the first instance, consult the class teacher. If after tis you are still concerned,
please contact the Headteacher. If after this you are still concerned, please contact the
Chairperson of the Governing Body.

Additional Learning Needs

The school operates an annual audit of the educational needs of children and, if it is judged
that a child has special educational needs, he/she is included on the school’s Additional
Learning Needs Register. Following the policy of the Local Education Authority, which also
follows the Code of Practice and is consistent with statutory requirements, children with
Additional Learning Needs are placed in different stages. Within these stages, close
monitoring of the pupil’s development is kept, and help is given to try and overcome these
difficulties. If these problems persist, preparation of a request is made, in conjunction with
Local Education Authority’s educational psychologists, for suitable provision, and when
required, we consult with various outside agencies for additional advice. The needs of an
individual child can be emotional, educational or behavioural. Exceptionally able or gifted
children can also be deemed to have Additional Learning Needs, and their requirements are
taken into consideration according to the policy of the Local Education Authority. Close
communication is kept with the parents/guardians throughout the process.
Mrs Sarah Newman and Miss Sian Bryan are our Additional Learning Needs Co-ordinators,
and Mrs Helen Seal gives extra help to children who are on the ALN register. They are
taught individually or in small groups throughout the week.

Timetable

The morning session commences at 9am promptly, and the afternoon session at 1pm. The
school closes at 3.15pm. Parents collect their children at the main school entrance.
We kindly ask you not to park in or in front of private entrances, the main entrance, or turn
round in them. The lay-by outside the school needs to be kept clear between 3pm and 3.20pm
in order to allow buses to park.
Also we ask everyone to use the main entrance only when bringing children to school in the
morning and when collecting them in the afternoons.

www.brobrynach.amdro.org.uk 01994 448268 [email protected]

Pastoral Care

Usually the staff are responsible for the safety of children 15 minutes before the
commencement of the morning session, until 15 minutes after the end of the school day. Of
course, when certain circumstances or extra curricular activities are arranged, then the
staff concerned will assume responsibility during these periods. All children are asked to
attend school on time to foster good habits of punctuality. Despite supervision of children by
staff, accidents do occur from time to time. Every care and attention is given in these cases,
and First Aid is administered immediately. Parents are immediately contacted regarding such
an occurrence. If it is thought that injuries need immediate medical treatment then
arrangements are made to transport the child to a local Medical Centre or to West Wales
General Hospital, Carmarthen. If a child becomes unwell during the school day the school’s
policy is to contact parents and ask them to take the child home. When a child is thought to
be suffering from an infectious disease the same arrangements apply. It is important that
children suffering from infectious diseases be kept at home until such time as the condition
improves. Medical examinations are periodically carried out at the school, and visits by
speech therapists and educational psychologists are arranged when the need arises. Parents
are informed accordingly.
The school requests that parents kindly forward a letter to the Headteacher:

a) when a child has to leave school early.
b) to provide an explanation for non-attendance at school on the first day back at school.

Failure to send a letter within a reasonable time – span will mean that a child is
entered on the attendance register as absent without permission.
c) if a child has to take essential medicines, and to give permission for a member of
staff to administer the medication.
d) to provide a reasonable explanation why a child cannot attend a swimming or physical
education lesson.
e) to ask permission to release a child from school during term time in order to go on a
family vacation.

www.brobrynach.amdro.org.uk 01994 448268 [email protected]

When certain educational or other visits are arranged for the children, permission is first
requested from parents. Parents are informed of the dates of school holidays, as well as
every extra curricular activity.
Parents/Guardians are asked to fill in numerous forms at the beginning of the academic year.
We would appreciate it if these could be returned to the school promptly. If there are any
changes to an individual’s situation within that year, please inform the school.
One photography consent form will be sent home. By signing this, permission will be granted
by parents/guardians for the school to take photographs of the children for the whole
academic year. This may include photos taken for the use of, for example, newspapers and
the school prospectus, camcorder recording of various school activities, TV filming, and
possibly pictures of children for the school website, if not objected by parents/guardians.
We will not be able to inform parents/guardians beforehand of every individual activity.

Discipline and School Rules

The function of a school is to prepare children to grow up into good citizens, useful, helpful
and respected members of society. Consequently it is expected that each child should
conduct himself in a courteous and acceptable manner, as a member of society within the
school.
Children are expected to co-operate with the following:
• to show courtesy and respect towards each other and adults inside and outside school.
• to respect the school building, its furniture and equipment.
• to walk, not run, in the school corridors
The school treats every case of misbehaviour fairly. Emphasis is laid upon good behaviour and
a healthy attitude by its pupils towards all facets of school activities. When a case of gross
misbehaviour occurs, an interview with the child’s parents is arranged immediately.
The governors of the school have the right to exclude a pupil who constantly misbehaves.
The school has policy statements on behaviour and bullying.

www.brobrynach.amdro.org.uk 01994 448268 [email protected]

Preventing Bullying

We expect good behaviour from everyone and we put great emphasis on positive behaviour
and ethos, respect others and treat people as we expect to be treated, showing maturity
towards others.
The school considers bullying as a matter of great concern. The school is aware of situations
in school and will not tolerate any bullying.
Bullying is the willful, conscious desire to hurt, threaten or frighten someone physically or
verbally, and doing so repetitively.
Opportunities for discussing bullying with pupils are arranged as part of Personal and Social
Education, as well as circle time and assemblies.

Inclusion

Mr Mathew Lemon is the designated person for looked after children (LAC) and is
responsible for the welfare of these pupils in school. He will liaise between the school and
other agencies and will ensure that the pupil’s views are sought and discussed. Confidentiality
will be maintained at all times. In his absence, Miss Sian Bryan is the designated person in
charge.

Child Protection

The school has a Child Protection policy and Mr Mathew Lemon and Miss Sian Bryan are the
designated people. Protecting children from getting hurt is the responsibility of all staff at
school. We will follow the All Wales Child Protection Procedures that have been endorsed by
the Local Safeguarding Children Board. The purpose of these procedures is to prevent the
incidents of child mistreatments, support children who have been mistreated and to report
any cases of mistreatment to the relevant authorities. Miss Astra Shippton is the designated
safeguarding officer on behalf of the Governing Body.

Suggestions for parents with children under 5 who are starting
school

It is important that a child be prepared for entry into school. It is an advantage for a child
to have attended a local Nursery School, similar to the Ysgol Feithrin, before starting full-
time primary education. The following are basic suggestions for parents:

a) See that the child is able to use the toilet properly, put on his clothes and shoes, put
things away tidily, wash his hands, follow simple instructions, recognise his name, and
be able to use a knife and fork.

b) Include your child in your adult conversations whenever possible, i.e. discussing
arrangements for shopping, holidays, etc.

c) Watch television programmes together and discuss the programme items.
d) Read daily to your child. When visiting a shop or library, draw your child’s attention to

suitable books for his age group. There is a wide choice available.
e) Help your child realise how numbers occur in life, not by doing ‘sums’, but by counting

in various ways.
f) Teach your child simple nursery rhymes and play games with your child.

The Urdd – The Welsh League of Youth

The Urdd or Welsh League of Youth is an organisation for children and young people in
Wales. Its various activities include quizzes and sports competitions, and a centre at
Llangrannog for various activities such as skiing, and the Millenium Centre in Cardiff. The
Urdd National Eisteddfod, a cultural festival, is held annually after competitions at local and
county levels. There is an annual subscription.
The school organises an eisteddfod every year. The winners go on to the Whitland/St Clears
Area Eisteddfod. If they are successful here they go on to the County Eisteddfod and
perhaps the Urdd National Eisteddfod. We have two houses in the school – Taf and Gronw,

Sex Education

There is no formal teaching of Sex Education, but it is part of Personal and Social
Education. All questions that children might ask are answered with truth and honesty. The
statutory requirements of the science curriculum concerned with growth and reproduction
are taught. Children are taught to be aware of the physical changes that occur in their
bodies as they get older.
An annual visit by a nurse of the Health Authority is arranged for the children of year 6,
where discussion is promoted and information passed on concerning body changes during
adolescence.
If parents do not wish for their children to be part of these discussions, please inform us
beforehand.

Friends of the School Committee

The ‘Friends of Ysgol Bro Brynach’ hold a termly meeting to discuss fundraising and any
school issues. If anyone wishes to raise a matter in a meeting, they should notify the school
beforehand. The PTA enjoys organising events every year to raise money for the school.
Some of these events include a duck race and summer fair, Christmas bingo, raffle, selling
second hand items, recipe book, and useful resources and workshops are bought, e.g. digital
cameras, learning materials and books, resources for the Foundation Phase, folk dancing,
craft and science workshops. All ideas and contributions are greatly appreciated.

Links with Other Schools

At the end of KS2, children have the choice of the following schools to attend within the
catchment, which are:

Homework

Homework is set for pupils in the Foundation Phase, and on occasions, children may be asked
to learn simple songs or poetry at home. Children are expected to take their reading book
home every day, and to read regularly.
Children in years 3, 4, 5 and 6 are also expected to read every evening. They are set
homework twice a week on average, usually associated with work done in school, including
spelling tests and investigations. Sometimes they take unfinished work home with them or
spelling lists to learn for testing during the week. As well as this, years 5 and 6 are also given
individual topic work as a form of differentiation, and is an useful tool for teacher
assessment.

Physical Education

Physical Education is the aspect of the curriculum concerned with the development of
physical skills, knowledge and understanding in games, swimming, gymnastics, dance, athletics,
and outdoor activities. Swimming is taught for years 3, 4, 5, and 6 during the Autumn Term.
These activities are arranged on a modular basis. Activities are carried out at the school’s
hall, the village playing field, the school yard and field and Crymych Swimming Pool.

Competitions in athletics, rugby, rounders and netball are arranged with neighbouring
schools. Inter school athletics are arranged in the summer term by the Vale of Taf Sports
Association. A school sports day takes place in the summer term. Trophies are presented
for the best boy and girl athlete in the Infants and Juniors. Boys and girls are encouraged to
take part in all sports. In the interest of promoting personal hygiene, all children are
requested to bring appropriate clothing and footwear for games lessons. Jewellery should
not be worn at all during Physical Education or games lessons.

Home/School Partnership

We have an open door policy, and parents are encouraged to come and talk to us about any
concerns that they may have. Parents evenings are held three times a year and open evenings
are also held throughout the year.

We set targets for each individual child during the Autumn Term, and we offer advice and
encouragement for parents so that they can help their child succeed in these targets.

The pupils’ reports are given out to parents at the end of the Summer Term, and they are
encouraged to come and discuss their child’s progress with the teachers.
All pupils have a home/school contact book to ensure a close partnership.
We have a contract between the school and the home. This contract means that the pupil and
his/her home and the school have agreed to co-operate in order to ensure the very best
opportunity for the child’s development and education. This is presented to you on your
child’s asmission to school.
Parents are encourages to help the school in various activities, e.g. transporting children
during educational visits, helping with Dragon Sports, accompanying in a band during school
shows, organising costumes or creating sceneries for shows.

Language Policy – Category 1 Welsh Medium Primary School

Our aim is to teach children to be able to use Welsh and English when they leave school to
enable them to be full members of the bilingual community in
which they live. Welsh is the main medium of teaching in the
Foundation Phase. If your home language is English, your child
will be introduced to Welsh in a sensitive way. English is
introduced as a subject in year 3. Mathematics and Science is
taught through the medium of Welsh and English at KS2, and
the foundation subjects are mostly taught through the
medium of Welsh.

Religious Education and Worship

The Religious Education provided is based on the Authority’s agreed syllabus.
The children have the opportunity to worship in the services on a daily basis as a school or as
a class. Arrangements can be made for children whose parents do not wish them to attend
religious services. A written request to the Headteacher is required.

Target for Improving Pupil Attendance

Parents are reiminded that they need to contact the school to inform or explain any
absences. Permission is not given to take children out of school for term time holidays.
Punctuality is important.

Eco-Schools

We are participating in the Eco-Schools program and are working towards winning the green
flag. We have a flower and vegetable garden at the school which we develop on a yearly basis.
It gives the children the opportunity to plant, grow and taste
vegetables, which makes them more aware of where we have our food
and the work needed to prepare the food. They are made aware of the
affect their actions have on the world, such as throwing rubbish,
travelling short distances in vehicles and buying food that has to be
transported from far away.

School Council

The school council is a group of students who are elected to represent the views of all pupils
and to improve their school.
Each year, every class will normally elect 2 representatives to be members of the school
council.
The school council hold stalls at the summer and Christmas fete and started a business
selling Christmas cards. By having a school council the children feel that the school responds
to their needs and views, have a say in decisions, and to play an active role in making the
school a better place.

Bronze Ambassadors

The Bronze Ambassadors are students who are elected to:
· run lunch time clubs for Yrs 1 – 6
· update school sport notice board and website
· promote existing and new sport clubs within the school
· speak in school assembly and to school governors about the benefits of physical activity
· invite local sports clubs into school
· assist with the school sport survey

Healthy School

The school is proudto be part of the Healthy Schools Programme. We have already won three
leaves for completing and continuing the aims. The programme plays an important part in
every day school life. When children begin school they are given their own water bottle and
are encouraged to drink plenty of water as well as eat a balanced diet. We have a fruit shop
in the school where children can buy their morning
snack. We discuss health issues as part of our school
work regularly, as well as teaching values and we are
working to develop the programme further within the
school and the community.
