ONJIUM

RESERCH INSTITUTE :

TRADITIONAL KOREAN CULTURE

ONJIUM

Onjium, which means ‘creating completely,’ finds the wisdom
behind the basics in life--clothing, food, and housing--through
tradition. Its philosophy is “to keep the present righteous and
complete based on old materials.” This is the best term that allows
you to ‘make’ clothing, rice, and housing.
Onjium first opened as the Traditional Culture Research Center that
is affiliated with Hwadong Cultural Foundation in June 2013, and
has succeeded in modernizing the value and spirit reflected in the
traditional Korean culture. It was originally under the same roof as
Areumjigi Foundation, but it moved to a larger venue in
Changseong-dong last summer. Onjium’s determination to study
tradition and deliver it to present generations is growing more
sturdily in the new space that is calling for bigger challenges.
Onjium’s space is divided into different sections for clothing, food,
and housing studies. The Clothing Studio, Food Studio, and
Housing Studio focus on the traditional Korean culture represented
by Hanbok, Hansik, and Hanok, respectively

The studios are led by the chiefs who are experts
in history and theories, and are run by chiefs and
members with 10 or more years of hands-on
experience. The lobby on the first floor is for
studies and implementations of everything
about life. Interesting projects of Onjium are
turned into exhibitions that blend with various
genres of art, cooking classes where tasty
recipes are shared, and discussions where
Onjium researchers actively share knowledge
and information.

s

If you go down a level, you will find the Housing Studio.
Onjium conducted studies and restored traditional
Korean houses, and worked on building Korean houses
that suit modern lifestyles. Its passion is reflected in the
enormous piles of resources and books that have filled
an entire wall.
The Clothing Studio is on the second floor. This place
showcases traditional Korean costumes based on
historical resources from the Age of the Three Empires,
and reproduces traditional outfits based on the said
resources.
They also make modern Hanbok that can be worn every
day. The Guui and Baeja exhibited in the Clothing Studio
are so modern that you cannot even believe that they are
traditional designs from the past. Elaborate sewing
techniques and structural designs evoke timeless beauty.
When you step onto the 4th floor, mouth-watering
flavors will be greeting you at the Food Studio. The Food
Studio features timetested recipes throughout Korea.
Also, native ingredients grown in Korean soil are used in
traditional recipes to create tastes that are familiar to us,
yet are completely different. Onjium’s Food Studio
Restaurant used to have only one table, but is now
serving more guests with more tables on hand. You can
relive a special moment countless times, as you look out
on the open view of Gyeongbokgung Palace while
indulging in the flavors of the season. I thought of how
you should ‘live’ life while I was at Onjium. It is hard to
produce anything perfectly, but beauty lies in how you
endure and overcome hardships.

N Seoul Tower, also commonly known as Namsan Tower, is an
iconic Seoul landmark that provides bird’s-eye views of the city.
It is both an observation and communication tower located at the
