They recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with key players in South African infrastructure development to further assess the possibility of establishing a Completely Knocked Down (CKD) vehicle assembly facility in the country. The MoU was signed during a press conference held at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg. Mahindra partnered with South Africa’s Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) to explore the potential of setting up a CKD assembly facility in the country. While this doesn’t mean a new production facility is confirmed yet, it shows Mahindra’s commitment to the local market. The plant recently celebrated its 25,000th locally assembled Pik Up. This new commitment to exploring a CKD facility in South Africa is a big deal for Mahindra’s plans in Southern Africa and beyond. During the press conference, Mahindra also announced plans to increase its production capacity at the AIH Logistics in KwaZulu-Natal to up to 1,500 units per month. This move shows Mahindra’s dedication to growing its operations in the country. Proton Saga Assembly Commences in Egypt I n the first quarter of 2025, Ezz Elsewedy Automotive Factories (ESAF) started assembling the Proton Saga, a model by Malaysian automaker Proton, in their 70,000 square metre complex located in the 6th October Industrial Zone. Hisham Ezz Alarab, Chairman of Ezz Elarab Group, confirmed this exciting news. The assembly facility, which cost $50 million to build, is one of three planned in the complex. It has the capacity to produce up to 40,000 vehicles every year. Ezz Alarab mentioned that the Proton Saga cars will be sold in Egypt and exported to seven African countries. Additionally, ESAF is planning to set up a spare parts plant within the next 18 months, with a paint shop being the third plant in the works. In the long term, the company aims to expand into electric vehicle (EV) production and components, with a goal of assembling 80,000 cars annually in the complex. Proton’s CEO, Li Chunrong, sees Egypt as a gateway to Africa and the Middle East. He mentioned that they plan to produce 5,000 Proton Saga CKD units in 2025, aligning with their vision to focus on exports for growth. ESAF’s CEO, Amr Abu El Saud, shared that the company is looking to work with local and global brands through contract manufacturing and assembly. Bassem Ashmawy, General Manager of Proton Egypt, highlighted the significance of the Proton Saga assembly as a new milestone in their 20-year partnership with Ezz Elarab, which has brought over 18,000 vehicles to the Egyptian market. January-February issue l 2025 Africa Automotive News l 2025 5 News Dangote Peugeot Automobiles Nigeria Limited (DPAN) is now assembling the GT model of the Peugeot 3008, a popular SUV, at its assembly plant in Kaduna. This is a big deal because it shows Dangote’s commitment to making more cars in Nigeria. Peugeot first started assembling the 3008 model in Africa in Ghana in 2022. This was a big step for the brand as it expanded into the continent. The assembly was done at the Tema Assembly Plant owned by Silver Star Auto. DPAN started making Peugeot cars in Nigeria with the Peugeot 301 at its Kaduna plant. Since then, they have added more models like the Landtrek pickup, 3008, 5008, and 508. Dangote got involved in Nigeria’s car industry in 2016 and now DPAN is a joint venture with Stellantis Group, the Dangote Peugeot Automobiles Nigeria Limited (DPAN) Expands Production in Nigeria Nigeria’s economy but also helps in reducing the country’s dependence on imported vehicles. Furthermore, Dangote is not only creating job opportunities for Nigerians but also promoting the development of a skilled workforce in the auto manufacturing sector. This will ultimately lead to a more sustainable and self-sufficient automotive industry in Nigeria. Kano and Kaduna state governments, and Dangote Industries. However, the widespread adoption of EVs is not simply a matter of plugging in and driving; it hinges critically on the capacity and resilience of our power grids. As more people are gradually switching to EVs, the demand for electricity will surge significantly. Failing to adequately address the infrastructure needs will create significant bottlenecks, hindering the transition and potentially undermining the environmental benefits of EVs. While a single EV draws relatively little power compared to a household, the cumulative effect of millions of EVs charging simultaneously, particularly during peak hours, presents a substantial challenge to existing power grids. Imagine a scenario where thousands of commuters return home at the same time, simultaneously plugging in their EVs. This sudden spike in electricity demand could overload the grid, and potentially lead to widespread power failures. In Africa, the region faces the urgent need for sustainable transportation solutions while simultaneously striving for economic growth and improving quality of life. Electric cars (EVs) present a compelling pathway towards achieving these goals, offering reduced emissions and potential for localized manufacturing and job creation. However, the success of this transition hinges critically on the robustness and reliability of Africa’s power grids. Without significant investment and modernization, the widespread adoption of EVs could be severely hampered, creating restricted access that negate many of the environmental and economic benefits. You might be thinking, “Electric cars are about batteries, not power grids.” While battery technology is undeniably crucial, it’s only one piece of the puzzle. The reality is that charging millions of EVs will place an unprecedented strain on existing power infrastructure, particularly in regions where electricity access is already limited. Currently, many African nations face significant challenges in their power infrastructure. These include: • Limited Generation Capacity: Many countries struggle to generate sufficient electricity to meet existing demand, let alone accommodate the added strain of widespread EV adoption. This shortfall often leads to frequent power outages and load shedding, severely impacting daily life and hindering economic productivity. • Uneven Distribution of Electricity: Access to electricity remains uneven across the continent. Rural areas often lack access altogether, creating a significant barrier to EV adoption beyond urban centers. Even in urban areas, unreliable supply can render EVs impractical for many. • Aging and Inadequate Infrastructure: Many existing power grids are aging and require significant upgrades to handle the increased demand that would accompany a largescale shift to electric vehicles. Transmission and distribution networks are often outdated and inefficient, leading to significant energy losses. • Intermittency of Renewable Sources: While Africa boasts immense potential for renewable energy sources like solar and wind power, their intermittent nature presents challenges for grid stability. Investing in education and training programs will equip the next generation with the necessary skills. Transforming Africa’s energy landscape, driving sustainable development The successful integration of electric cars into our transportation system is inextricably linked to the health and capacity of our power grids. The transition to electric cars is not simply about replacing one form of transportation with another; it’s about transforming Africa’s energy landscape and driving sustainable development. While the challenges are significant, the potential rewards are immense. By prioritizing investments in reliable and modern power grids, Africa can unlock the full potential of electric vehicles, fostering economic growth, improving public health, and creating a more sustainable future for its citizens. The transition demands a comprehensive and coordinated effort, involving governments, the private sector and international partners, to ensure that the power grid becomes a facilitator, not a barrier, to a cleaner, electrified future. and expanding their reach. This involves upgrading transmission lines, improving grid stability, and reducing energy losses through technological advancements. Smart grid technologies can enhance efficiency and optimize electricity distribution. iii.) Developing Smart Charging Infrastructure The widespread adoption of EVs requires a robust network of charging stations, strategically located to cater to different needs. Smart charging technologies can help manage peak demand and optimize energy consumption, minimizing strain on the grid. Incentivizing the private sector to develop and operate charging infrastructure is crucial. iv.) Promoting Energy Storage Solutions Integrating energy storage systems, such as batteries, is crucial for managing the intermittency of renewable energy sources and ensuring grid stability. This will enable a smoother transition to a cleaner and more reliable electricity supply. v.) Strengthening Regional Cooperation Collaborations between African nations can facilitate the sharing of best practices, resources and expertise in developing sustainable power systems. Regional electricity markets can improve grid resilience and efficiency. These infrastructural weaknesses pose significant hurdles to EV adoption. Imagine relying on an electric car when power cuts are frequent and unpredictable. This undermines consumer confidence and discourages investment in the necessary charging infrastructure. However, addressing these challenges also presents opportunities for transformative change. The transition to electric vehicles can act as a powerful catalyst for upgrading and modernizing Africa’s power grids. This presents a dual benefit: improving the reliability and accessibility of electricity for all while enabling widespread EV adoption. To achieve this requires a strategic approach: i.) Investing in Renewable Energy Generation Harnessing Africa’s abundant solar and wind resources is crucial. Large-scale renewable energy projects, coupled with smart grid technologies, can significantly boost generation capacity while reducing reliance on fossil fuels. Decentralized energy generation, particularly in rural areas, can improve access and resilience. ii.) The spread is fueled by the high profit margins associated with selling imitation products at significantly lower prices. These fakes often use substandard base oils, insufficient additives or even recycled waste products, resulting in lubricants that offer drastically reduced protection and performance compared to the genuine products. This not only damages a vehicle’s engine but also undermines consumer trust and brand reputation. In Africa, the automotive market is a critical sector that contributes significantly to the region’s economy. However, the industry is heavily shadowed by the proliferation of counterfeit lubricants in the market. Industry stakeholders, manufacturers and vehicle owners are facing a substantial economic losses associated with this issue. These counterfeit products often flood the market, infiltrating legitimate supply chains and deceive unsuspecting consumers. “Counterfeiting is a major concern in the automotive industry, especially for spare parts and lubricants, where safety and brand reputation are critical. Innovations and Solutions in Combating Counterfeit Automotive Lubricants Years back, the primary method of identifying counterfeit lubricants relied on visual inspection – checking labels for inconsistencies, examining packaging for imperfections and noting discrepancies in the product's viscosity or color. However, sophisticated counterfeiters became adept at mimicking even the most minute details, rendering visual inspection largely ineffective. This demanded a multi-faceted approach incorporating advanced technologies and collaborative efforts across the industry. In response to this persistent problem, various innovations and solutions have been developed to combat this problem. According to Guankai, “To combat this growing issue, there are 2 types of new solutions that can be adopted across the supply chain: Smart Packaging and Product Markers.” Additionally, from advancements in authentication technology, collaborative industry efforts and consumer awareness campaigns, stakeholders are actively working towards safeguarding the market and protecting consumers from the risks associated with counterfeit lubricants. These include: Advanced Packaging Technology Manufacturers are employing sophisticated packaging techniques to make counterfeiting more and more difficult. This allows instant checks against genuine product databases and flags duplicates or unknown codes. “At the heart of ValiGate® is a serialized, copy-proof QR code containing an encrypted, patented pattern that cannot be replicated. Any attempt to copy the code results in degradation of the embedded security pattern, making counterfeiting immediately detectable,” Mathe highlights. “Its key advantage is that it can be printed directly onto products or packaging using standard Flexo, Offset, or HP printing technologies, eliminating the need for separate security labels and ensuring seamless integration into manufacturing,” she adds. In his opinion, Guankai adds that, “Unique security codes such as Anticopy codes or Encrypted QR codes can be printed directly onto lubricant bottles to become smart packaging. These security codes can also be printed onto tamper-evident labels and applied as product seal.” Tamper-Evident Seals and Closures Moving beyond simple caps, manufacturers are using more sophisticated seals and closures that are extremely difficult to replicate without specialized equipment. These can include heat-shrink sleeves with unique patterns and complex cap designs that show visible signs of tampering. Unique Container Designs Custom-designed bottles with intricate molds are harder to copy than generic containers. These may include embedded logos, textures and unique shapes. Some brands are even exploring materials beyond standard plastic, which are more difficult or costly for counterfeiters to source and process. Blockchain Technology Blockchain's decentralized and immutable nature offers a powerful tool to track lubricants throughout their supply chain. Each stage of production, distribution and sale can be recorded on a blockchain, making it impossible to introduce counterfeit products undetected. This enhances transparency and accountability within the supply chain. Real-Time Anti-Counterfeit Management Modern anti-counterfeiting management platforms offer a multilayered approach to tackling this prevalent problem. Mathe further explains, “ValiGate® empowers consumers through a simple smartphone authentication process. Without needing an app, users can scan the QR code to instantly verify product authenticity, enhancing trust and confidence.” “The combination of physical and digital technologies empowers consumers to authenticate their product purchases via smartphones,” affirms Guankai. He went on to add that, “Verification of security codes allow consumer engagement and tracking of the lubricants from production to distribution. This ensures traceability and builds trust with customers.” Consumer Education Raising consumer awareness about the dangers of counterfeit lubricants is equally important. This can involve easily accessible information on company websites, media campaigns and partnerships with consumer advocacy groups. Educating drivers on how to identify suspicious products and where to purchase genuine lubricants can significantly reduce the demand for fake products. Enhanced Collaboration and Law Enforcement Industry collaboration is crucial in combating counterfeiting. Manufacturers are working together to share information, develop best practices and support law enforcement efforts to identify and prosecute counterfeiters. International cooperation is also vital to address the transnational nature of this criminal activity. Moreover, working closely with customs and border control agencies to identify and intercept counterfeit lubricants entering the country is crucial. This involves sharing information, training officers in identifying counterfeits and participating in joint operations. “Technology alone can assist brand owners to prevent loss of revenue due to counterfeiting. However, collaboration among manufacturers, retailers, and technology providers is still essential to safeguard consumers and ensure that only high-quality lubricants reach the market,” concludes Guankai. The challenge of counterfeit lubricants poses a significant threat to vehicle performance, consumer safety and brand integrity. As technology advances, so do anticounterfeiting solutions offering promising ways to authenticate products and track their origins. January-February issue l 2025 Africa Automotive News l 2025 11 Safari Rally Kenya Hyundai’s i20 N Rally1 Update Reverted for Safari Rally Kenya Hyundai made some upgrades to their i20 N Rally1 cars for Rally Sweden, but they will be going back to the older version for the Safari Rally Kenya. The decision was made to prioritize reliability for this tough rally. Reasons for Reverting Thierry Neuville and Ott Tänak explained that the team didn’t have enough time to test the new parts on rough roads, so they decided to stick with the older car that they know is strong and reliable. “Yeah, we are back to the old car,” the 2019 world champion said. “Just so that we know reliability is there. It’s the kind of rally where reliability is priority.” In Rally Sweden, Neuville and Tänak finished in 3rd and 4th place with the upgraded Hyundai. Despite some balance issues and tire degradation, they felt that the upgrades were not the cause of these problems. Challenges in Assessing the Car Neuville mentioned that the unique conditions of Rally Sweden made it hard to fully evaluate the car’s performance. Tänak believes that the car has the potential to be better, but they are still working on finding the best setups. Among these, is the Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) that significantly reduces the likelihood of skidding and loss of control, particularly during emergency braking situations. At the heart of this system lies a network of strategically placed ABS sensors, which play a critical role in maintaining vehicle stability and driver control. ABS sensors are electromechanical devices that constantly monitor the rotational speed of each wheel. They achieve this by employing various technologies, most commonly a magnetic reluctor ring and a sensor that detects changes in the magnetic field. The reluctor ring, a toothed metal ring attached to the wheel hub, rotates with the wheel. As the teeth pass the sensor, they create a fluctuating magnetic field, which the sensor translates into electrical pulses. The frequency of these pulses directly corresponds to the wheel’s rotational speed. This data is then transmitted to the ABS control unit (ECU).
