PROSPECTUS
2017/2018

Headteacher’s Introduction

I would like to thank you for showing an interest in
sending your child to Llangatwg Community School.
This prospectus will give you a flavour of what
Llangatwg is about. The strong links that exist
between home and school are something that we are
very proud of and the warm and welcoming atmosphere
is something that is often commented upon.

Llangatwg is a school that is forward looking and is committed to delivering the
very best education for your child. In the most recent inspection report, Estyn
stated that Llangatwg has ‘high expectations and a very purposeful working
atmosphere that result in very high standards of achievement.’ The focus on
high expectations and achievement is something that permeates the school
and is underpinned by our belief that every child can and will succeed.
Standards and outcomes are extremely important to us and we are
recognised as one of the leading school’s in Neath Port Talbot and Wales in
terms of standards at Key Stage 3 and 4.

Llangatwg is very much a family school and the purposeful environment and
atmosphere of the school is one where children thrive. The school has been
recognised at a national level for the standard of care support and guidance
that we offer and one of only two schools in Wales to receive the Pupil
Participation Kite Mark.

As a school we are committed to developing the ‘whole child’ and there are a
wealth of extra-curricular opportunities on offer to our children. An array of
activities take place most lunchtimes and evenings including, horse riding,
surfing, table tennis, extra-revision sessions, music, drama and sporting
fixtures. We are fortunate to have excellent facilities and the most up to date
ICT equipment, which enable children to develop their interests whatever
they might be.

Should you have any queries or would like to visit us, please contact the school
where an appointment can be arranged.

Kindest Regards,

Alan L Rowlands
Prifathro / Headteacher

Curriculm Statement,
Teaching methods and
school organisation

Three fundamental principles provide the basis for the
academic organisation of the school.

• The need to make all aspects of the curriculum
accessible to all learners.

• The need to provide a system which will allow all
learners to reach their full potential in each individual subject.

• The need to remove group labelling of learners.

Year 7

Pupils are arranged and taught in mixed ability form groups for
the Autumn Term and are then streamed according to the
assessment information we receive from primary schools
and the baseline testing that we undertake in this term.
In year 7, for the Spring and Summer terms, pupils are set
within their bands for subjects. Pupils with Additional Learning
Needs receive the support of the Learning Support Assistant
and other teachers in their mainstream lessons.

Year 8 & 9

Each Year Group is divided into two mirror images of
two/three mixed ability form groups. It is envisaged that the
vast majority of pupils will continue to be taught in the
streams to which they were placed during Year 7. In addition
to this Maths and English will have the opportunity to set the
pupils within these streams.

Year 10 & 11

Each year group is again divided into two mirror images.
The same core subjects and options are offered to all
learners. Senior staff, form tutors and subject teachers offer
guidance to our pupils to ensure they chose option subjects
wisely. In addition, pupils are offered subjects leading to
different examinations.

At present these include GCSE, Vocational Related
Qualifications, Entry Level Qualifications, BTECs and OCR
Cambridge National Vocational Qualifications. Therefore, it is
possible for pupils not only to choose the subjects that
interest them but also to study at a level that is appropriate to
