Developing Routine Just for Parents

Parenting Tips from an Osseo Early Childhood Parent Educator

Every parent knows, as the seasons change, so do our family routines. Age,
temperament, sleep, hunger, and a child’s ability to communicate, manage
emotions and reason, all influence how they understand and cope with
changes in routine.

What can we do to ease our children through transitions and into a new
schedule?

Here are some helpful tips:

u Introduce changes with a positive attitude and then a consistent
schedule will allow the routine to gain traction.

u Ask for help or take a break when learning a new routine gets tough!

u Share with your child, how you learned the same skill as a child.

u Explain the expectations, and steps of the new routine.

u Give your child a role to play and choices you can live with, in the new
routine.

u Use a lovey – a special toy or possession, to provide comfort.

u Use humor, books, play and songs to learn new routines.

u Change your child’s surroundings, if it is too loud, busy, bright, etc.

u Use visual cues, like pictures, body language or hand signals.

u Be patient! Adapting to a new routine takes time and patience.

Remember, while learning and activities are fun, healthy families need down
time too! Build in time for your family to connect. As Kim John Payne,
author of Simplicity Parenting notes, “The spaces between activities are where
relationships are built.”
