DISTINGUISHED ALUMNA
Rachel Grey Ellis
Rachel’s love for Tamarack began at age six when her
parents, Ruth (z”l) and Jim Grey, brought others together
to start the first Family Camp. Rachel grew up as a “staff
kid” and camper during Ruth’s eleven years as a beloved
Associate Camp Director. Rachel was also a teen service
staff (TSS) member, counselor, and tripper. In each of these
roles, Rachel positively influenced her fellow campers, and
later, the campers and staff she supervised.
Rachel served on the Tamarack Camps Board of Directors for over a decade, where she
helped build the foundation for alumni outreach and connection. She was instrumental in
the return of New Year’s Family Camp and created a new camp tradition, Family Fun Day,
which engaged 1,500 alumni, families, and community members in its first year and has
become an annual favorite. More recently, Rachel reunited her TSS 1991 group and led efforts
to establish the Jason Zaks (z”l) Memorial Scholarship Endowment Fund to provide camper
scholarships for generations to come.
Professionally, Rachel has shaped the Jewish identities of thousands of teens through her
work at BBYO, where she served as Senior Regional Director for over 6 years. She continues
to lead in our community as the newly appointed Executive Director at Temple Beth El.
Rachel attributes her love of Judaism, professional success, and dedication to community
to the lessons and values she learned at Tamarack Camps. She now sees her children, third-
generation campers – Shira, Ari, and Noam – embracing the same values and flourishing.
L’dor V’dor.
COMMUNITY LEADERS
Sue and Alan J. Kaufman
Sue and Alan Kaufman have generously invested in the
Jewish lives of so many people; and, as a result, the
Kaufmans are shaping the future of Metropolitan Detroit.
They have made an indelible impact on Tamarack Camps
by supporting camper scholarships year after year and
in building the Sue & Alan J. Kaufman Family Staff Lodge,
among many other contributions. Having previously
served as a board member of Tamarack Camps, Alan continues his deep involvement by
volunteering on the Community Leaders Advisory Committee.
The Kaufmans’ generosity provides teen campers with life-changing experiences through
the Sue & Alan Kaufman and Family Teen Mission to Israel, in partnership with the Jewish
Federation of Metropolitan Detroit and community congregations. The Kaufmans’
long-standing support has powered the Teen Mission since 2012 and sent over 500 teens
to Israel, a testament of their commitment to fostering meaningful connections between
Metro Detroit and Israel.
Sue and Alan’s support and engagement extend far beyond Tamarack. Alan has been
a significant leader, serving on many corporate and philanthropic boards, both globally
and locally. Among his stewardship of numerous Michigan organizations, Alan is the
immediate past president of the United Jewish Foundation of Metropolitan Detroit and a
board member of Adat Shalom Synagogue, Jewish Community Center, Detroit Zoological
Society, and Business Leaders for Michigan. He is a 2021 recipient of the National Eagle
Scout Association’s Distinguished Eagle Scout Award and was recently honored by Walsh
College, to name just a few accolades of late. Sue is the immediate past president and
previous campaign chair of Federation’s Women’s Philanthropy, and she is a board member
of Hebrew Free Loan. Sue and Alan’s impact on our community is truly far-reaching,
extraordinary, and exemplary. In addition to their philanthropic work, Alan is an industry
leader, serving as Chairman, President, and CEO of H.W. Kaufman Group. He is also a senior
partner at Kaufman, Payton & Chapa.
Sue and Alan’s leadership and passion for taking care of the community – and beyond –
is inspiring. As parents and grandparents, the Kaufmans have instilled their family values,
commitment to Jewish Detroit, and love of camping in their children (Jodie, Jamie, Emily,
Josh, Morgan, and Danny) and eight grandchildren. From generation to generation, the
Kaufmans have enjoyed being Tamarack campers. L’dor V’dor.
