Grade 7 Science Module 1 Introduction

Science 7

Module 1
August 10-31, 2020

Module 1: Introduction

Hi girls! Welcome to Module 1. Here, we are going to learn the exciting
preliminary concepts that are important in understanding the different
lessons for the three terms this school year.
These are:

✅ Science Laboratory Glass wares, and Tools or Equipment
✅ Science Laboratory, and Safety Practices
✅ How to Use the Scientific Calculator
✅ Conversion of SI Units

Goals of the Subject: To deliberately develop in the students the capacity to do scientific

thinking, critical thinking, and problem-solving real life situations.

At the end of this module, you will be able to:
1. Identify and familiarize the use and function of the laboratory glass wares, tools or

equipment.
2. Demonstrate safety actions inside the science lab or when doing experiments at home.
3. Know how to use the scientific calculator for the purpose of pre-requisite skill in solving

word problems later on.
4. Convert measurements from one unit to another.

Essential Questions
1. Why is it necessary to know the name and purpose or function of the laboratory glass

wares, and tools or equipment?
2. How can you apply conversion of measurements in your daily activities?

Welcome to the Science Laboratory!

A science laboratory is a place where the researchers or
scientists do their experiments or scientific investigations.

Some schools are fortunate to have laboratories that are exclusive for activities or
experiments on biology, chemistry, physics, and earth and environment.

It is expected that we do hard work in the lab for every activity or experiment. There
were times that lab activities were tedious. They test our patience and perseverance a lot!
It’s not always fun, but what is important is that we learned from our experiences.

learn how to avoid them. Many
common safety symbols are
shown .

Do you know how you can avoid these hazards?

Wearing protective gear or personal protective equipment is one way to avoid many
hazards in science. For example, to avoid being burned by hot objects, use hot mitts

or gloves to protect your hands. To avoid eye hazards, such as harsh liquids
splashed into the eyes, wear safety goggles. These are just among the few safety

reminders.

What took place in the ‘rice scenario’ ( is an
example of conversion of SI units.

Conversion is a multi-step The SI Base Units

multiplication or division by a

The SI is constructed from seven
base units, which are adequate to
describe most of the
measurements used in science,
industry and commerce.

Key Concept 4: Conversion of SI Units

Units belonging to the International System of Units (SI), as interpreted or
modified for use in the United States by the Secretary of Commerce
through the National Institute of Standards and Technology may be used

in:

● trade and commerce, SI Units
● procurements, are
● grants and other business-related activities,
● in educational information, and, used in
● as guidance in publications
studying
to increase understanding of the metric system. science.

All the SI units and standards are agreed upon and understood by scientists all over the
world.

To find out how many grams are there in a 25kg sack of rice, study how did we convert
from one unit to another and reach the answer.

solution:

Given Conversion Factor We are looking for How do we get it
25kg 1kg = 1000g
?______ g

answer: kilogram (kg) This method is called Dimensional
gram (g) Analysis

" You can use your sci cal to compute for
25kg = 25,000g
" this.

"

explanation:

This means that, to convert from 25 kilograms to grams, multiply 25
kilograms by 1000 grams. Then, the answer is 25,000 grams.

This means that for every 25 kilograms of a sack of rice we buy, the
equivalent value in grams is 25,000 grams.

Is this explana,on clear? Don’t worry, we will have more prac, ces on the next pages. Keep
moving forward. Remember, prac,ce makes progress.

Before ending this Module 1, let’s clap and tell ourselves, Good
Job for all the effort and hard work! %Thank you for trying
your best!

Now, let’s recall what we went through for the past weeks
learning everything here. Write your reflections, realizations,
suggestions, memes, jokes, topics which are your favorite or
you had a hard time learning on, or anything you wish to release.
Talk about it. You may doodle also using your favorite pen.
I will take time to read this page because this is history, the
