Dimple B Shah - Presentation-2019_Neat

Survival and Existence in One square

Foot

Leonard Houz, Beyond Ritual curated by Dorothea seror
Date -11 October 2017

This performance is about bringing in conflict of

existence the striving of every living being to survive
and also bringing in psychological tensions to survive.
This performance was specifically design to fit this
small window which is world smallest performance
space. It was quite a challenge to work in this Space
which was not a white cube but a small opening not
even your full body fits in it at length. The costume
materials and gestures were all directed to bring an
atmosphere where one struggles to survive and exist.

The sound was specifically modulated to create an
ambience and texture to performance along with the
projection on the background. All well-choreographed
to enhance and stimulate the audience and create a
sacred space to suggest them to question about
various ecological issues and how they connect to
other living beings like plant animals etc.

Mapping Sacred Spaces Live Action 11

Mapping Sacred Spaces
Live Action 11, Gothenburg, Sweden 2016
This performance was about marking the sacred space, the earth; the land is becoming
non livable / inhabitable space it is stained by bloodshed the blood of innocent and
common people. The whole world is slowly becoming space of war zone which is divided
into sacred and non sacred spaces. Every moment we are seeing these global
phenomenon happing people are losing their home their city their country and are
migrating to unknown and different land and finally end up as refugee or lose their life in
process. The whole world smells the blood, blood of innocent men women and children.
Slowly world is becoming like hell where there is no space for humanity, love and
compassion it is war for power money and politics. Through this performance my
attempt was to bring as sense of the psychological state of people who are refugees in
some other land. Bring attention to their struggle, the tension and striving for existence.
Through this performance I brought attentions, concerns related human psycho-
sociological condition where they strive for their existence, hope of life, dream and
Breath freely. Performance was to bring this unknown struggle through action and
marking human territories in sacred and non sacred space.

Through ritualistic act of carrying the turmeric root in my mouth all through the
performance was to reciprocate psychosocial tensions through act of body tension I
emphasized on to the struggle to maintain faith in sacredness, humanity and make
sacred space for living. The slow act of showering turmeric powder on the floor mapping
and marking the space into sacred space this was long performance about an hour,
where I tried to build faith in humanity, sacred, pure and healing space. Turmeric acts as
healing agent and also transforming agent in performance, later this whole situation of
sacred space was turned in to non sacred space when the act changed. Now I entered
into second layer of tension where the weight of homelessness, the refugee and
migration came into picture metaphorically through balancing act where at one point I
tied salt and knife on wooden stick and other point bag of belonging, memoires of
homeland.
The weight of this belonging was heavier to carry while balancing myself through
situation I tried to mark the pain through water this changed my sacred space into non
sacred space it represent stains of blood of innocent men women and children from war
zone, it had stained with broken dreams it stained with broken homes.

This was inevitable act and a fact that it cannot be hidden or erased and then I tried to
heal myself by pouring more turmeric on my body and whole act was mix of healing and
pain, but stain remained and it’s up to the people how it can be solved and turned
back into sacred space again.

Silent Whisper Trollhättan
,Sweden Curated by Jonas Stampe
2016

The Silent Whisper
Childhood Toys disappears, but fond memories remain

In this performance my attempt was to build a connection with my audience through objects of memory. The memories of childhood have lasting impression and impact in our mind. These memories of
childhood are Pure, naïve and embedded with innocence. In this work my attempt was to build an endless connection with my audiences through objects of childhood which are mundane and lost its
importance when grown up, but remains as keys to open doors to our childhood memories and also finds special space in our home whenever one want to connect to the past. My idea was to create
situations for audience, where audience could experience the space I come from. Every individual person comes from diverse cultural and geographical background. Every cultural has it unique language
and coded language, gesture which are unique; my idea was to bring this unique experience to my audience and evoke with new experiences.

The performance had started much before we reached the spot Trollhaltan, Sweden, Performance in Transit inside the train where I created a mood with sound and slowly Mauritz Tistelö also joined with
hand full of grass. The sound created a meditative mood for me to involve myself to childhood memory I was making sound by using small toy which was given by Linda Mary Montano for me it toy
reminded me of my childhood memory and also symbolically replicated self in some way and then we reached the Trollhalten and spot for performance, where I interacted with my audience by working on
different sensory level like food and color and objects like kitchen toys from my place and with visual images of objects of my collection. These personal objects of memories are extremely important and
plays important role in developing ones emotional stability and transcending the meaning which leads to sublime blissful feeling. This object are integral part of my life I presented this objects kitchen toys
to my audience to play home game and create a situation for exchange secret code each individual reacted and connected to objects differently in way they could connect and get involved themselves to
play home game through their perception and experiences. It was like building karmic connection through the act. It was basically about the relationship between humans and their memories of childhood.
As Alan Radley discusses, memory is a practice through which we “engage with the material world”. It is within this space that we recuperate the traces of ourselves and of the past, even if what we wish
to do is forget about it; or, in fact, erase it.

Memory is sources of personal identity images of past perception, perception of experience we had, frequency of process that links different experiences in an individual memory. Memories goes beyond
individual which is collective memory, the memory of a nation, culture and society, it is constructive in nature and links past to present, how do society remember this it through monuments, stories,
literature, oral history and objects. It is also process of making lost moment visible once again. Ordinary objects symbolizes experience, aspiration and identity without the object stories would lack vibrancy
without the stories they lack significance taken together the object / images of the object and stories that evoke, lead the viewers on journey where the common place is transformed into remarkable stuff
of history which is highly personalized. There might be events that transform ordinary things into irreplaceable carrier of identity emotion and memory this object help us finds way forward relics that are
associated with tremendous powerful events it does matter how does ordinary things is not just ordinary any more.

Whether as a site, agent, or purveyor of memory, objects and the collections they comprise serve to inform us of the past in the present and communicate identities. Memory is a liminal space, made
possible through a process of construction and conflation. memory is not just an individual, private experience but is also part of the collective domain, Recent research and theorizing in cultural memory
has emphasized the importance of considering the content of cultural identities in understanding the study of social relations and predicting cultural attitudes. “Every passion borders on the chaotic, but
the collector’s passion borders on the chaos of memories.” - Walter Benjamin"

From Here to There
Live Action 11 Curated BY Jonas Stampe. Gothenburg, Sweden
This performance was performed at river canal where the boats come in although this canal is used as tourist spot but at one point of time it would
have used for one of entry point at Lejontrappan Goteborg. I choose this spot deliberately since I create a situation for my audiences. These points
can act as entry point for my refugees to come in boats with life jackets on the refugees who have lost their home left their country and survived to
reach one of these European countries. This performance was subtle act about concern related migrations. I wanted to see how receptivity and
acceptability of refugees by local population I could see in their eyes when they thought I am one of migrator who is asking for help and they
started ignoring my work and me. My performance started in other side of road where lot of pigeons come for food and hence they left lot of
feathers as I was mentally preparing for my performance I collected many feathers from the spot and after some time I moved to other side
toward the river where boats come in. I started building small dream home first from the feathers as base and on top pasting plastic toy homes
which are colorful. I moved to the spots near boat and people were lining up for entry in boat. I could see the reaction from people they did not
want to have eye contacts I felt some doubt in their eyes I was also wearing belt which looked like refuges or police were. Slowly back to position
and started building home and which was tied to my head and I was carving Chalk piece which replicated like destroyed home from Syria and also
tired to give away cards which had images of this broken home and destroyed city and people the general public who were lining up were avoiding
me then few came to me and asked as I tried t give card with image of this dilapidated building and home they just did not want to accept. I was
trying to read their mind may be they don’t like refugees coming or they did not want to give spaces and very clearly it was shoeing up they were
not happy about lot of people migrating to their country the acceptability is not so easy they feel lot of insecurity about migrating people coming to
their city. Then my act unfolded with floating the feather and dream homes in water this was in hope people in far off land will see and will give
them some space for migrating population who have lost their home in their country.

This performance was conceived keeping in
mind the situation of women prevailing in
Patriarchal society I choose this subject to
look back in to history and bring back the

trauma which a women in such situation
goes on it not just one moment when she

Infused Combustion I Rise women's Exhibition Art Houz 2016, Bangalore ,India

INFUSED COMBUSTION
I was invited to be part of I Rise Second Edition (Women’s Exhibition at Art houz) to mark month of Women’s Day Festival. I chose to
performance Infused Combustion as part of my contribution to festival this again goes back to Women’s issues and concerns of victims of
Rape Ceaseless (endless) waiting for justice and agony of going through the process is constant. In this pretext especially as women the
challenges are multi fold and in India it seems to be all the more complex. Socially and politically the pace at which these issues are being
addressed is really a cause for concern. This leads to a psychological state of self combustion. My performance is an attempt to bring these
inner traumatic humiliation agony and ceaseless state that goes in the mind of a victim and also state of society and their sociological
concern in our country .Sadly this cycle goes on, it is not new and we don’t know how many unknown and known names lose their
battle/fight for justice through my work I am just trying to bring small part of this whole cycle. My attempt is to see, read and bring this
state of individual victim’s tension, and traumatic experience in my work. I feel this traumatic fear and pain is slowly spreading in our society
and no wonder one day it will become mass hysteria of pain and tension. The work is in abstract representation of my subconscious
impulse to such situation and I try to bring the healing element through an act from audience participation it is interactive performance
where audience will participate in act of healing by planting glass of milk in front of mass of black ball on site which is connected to hair of
artist which metaphorically represent wounded and negatives of society in form black ball.

Baul Ranga Shankara ,Banglaore 2016

I was invited to Performance and Installation for Tanti Dhatri
International Festival for Women (Part of Magdalena Project) I did
installation on tree and live performance during the opening of
festival. The Idea of the performance is about finding out traces of
my journey, unfolding first hand reaction to the communal rites an
era of saffronization later on gradually playing the role of victims
showing agony and pain this came with my first hand experience in
Baroda during the riots and now gradually working towards healing
aspect all this stages have impacted and influenced my

performances. As I look back it has been as these as been
ephemeral. A moment of time decade and half just gone in one
moment The emotive response has strongly drawn me toward
working on this key issue in subtle way, this time not expressing
mental trauma or brining out pain and agony but ascertaining
healing as key solution to this hysterical situation present in our
society. My efforts are to revisit and reassert those things again and
again in my work.
This work was interactive and Performative installation, where

metaphorically and ingeniously suggesting these stages in my work
through use of the alchemical elements like Ash, Turmeric and
Saffron. I worked with existing tree at the entrance of Ranga
Shankara, where I wrapped yellow color cotton cloth and extending
the tree form in center, where it will merge with mound of turmeric.
Audience were allowed to tie turmeric roots to the tree branches
they were given a memoirs of healing.

while state of mind is overpowered with negative
thought of fear no trust Deceit of life on life itself. It
point of tension wedge which cannot be swallowed

Monologue - I am Part of show identity and perspective of women

Monologue ( I am )

Ganges Art Gallery , Identity and Perspective Of
Women Curated by Lina Vincent
This performance was done as part of Curated Show by
Lina Vincent titled - Identity and perspective of women
at Ganges art gallery .The idea of performance is
monologue A dialogue with Self . This performance is
attempt to bring unheard voices of rape victim to the
audience sensitize them to agony and pain of Rape
victims although this issues of rape have become most
common news in India and Every day we hear the news
and so we become accustomed and then gradually
ignore and mum to the issue Everyday We are
surrounded with noises positive and negative around us
where we hardly hear the cry (cry of victims) and it gets
lost in those noises. We hardly give second thought to
their agony & misery or the least participation is to be a
spectator. The core idea of this performance is to bring
those repeatedly heard voices closer to audience and let
them feel and react and sensitize them and in process
they can contribute by writing on the Slate given to them
, thereby reacting and responding to audio played
during the performance through this engaging act
audience will enter in space of consciousness and healing
. The performance is ritualistic act where we evade of
negative energy enter in zone of healing and catharsis.

Mapping Paradigm Shift, Hysteria #5 Launch , Paris. France - 2015

MAPPING PARADIGM SHIFT

Hysteria Launch Event Paris 2016

Performance done as part of Hysteria launch performance

event at Le Stendhal, 5 rue Erard, 75012 Paris 4th July 2015.
This performance is about mapping oscillating thought process
of mind. Thought process those are in flux, and the dichotomy
of role of Body and mind of women. Every country (society)
has drawn a border line for role of women in the Society. Some
have given liberty but some have less liberty but the role is
always defined within a frame. Be it from social liberty to very
existence as an important and integral part of the constant
developing society. There is a constant debate on where to
draw line of control what women can do or deserve; each
country has its own set of rules, and what is permitted being

women.
As I see question of women’s position is always in flux, that
keep oscillating between how and what on women should be
doing and behave in the society. Through this performance I
was making an attempt to map the shifts like thoughts, belief,
theories and rights. The performance was perceived on both
levels personal and observers. The oscillation from purity to
impurity, mind and body, spiritual and material, right and
wrong, the performance will work on these trajectories,

confronting the realities that I experienced and also what
audience can recollect at that moment. This performance
completed with audience intervention.

Invited by kala Mandira Art college for their annual Festival

In Search of antidote is performance is ritualistic act through
by body action to heal body and mind of myself and my
audience. In this performance my main concern is to bring into

notice various social issues which is against humanity and
which provokes us for action against injustices happening. We
are social human being and we confront number of social
issues on everyday basis from corruption, injustice to innocent
to crimes against women and communal violence’s. It looks
like that we are constantly consuming these pressure/tension
of this society to fight with emotional and mental level and we
keep on absorbing so called this negativities like sponge which

Invititation for performance accumulates in our system like carbon on earth and if we don’t
burn out this into negative energy it will totally take us to

Imprinting the Dark Period

Chhobhir Hut Performance Festival ,Dhaka ,Bangaladesh
2014

This performance I conceived keeping in my first hand
experience in Dhaka city as I was entering city through the
roads from airport to friends place I saw a very big cluster
of tricycle Puller taking the road by storm and it fully
packed with traffic and I could only could see the struggle
and pain in their body which they take constantly take as
to survive in everyday life and myself as a third person
who is looking at whole thing as silent observer and
gulping the fact it way of life in Dhaka to work hard and

survive. This got two things in my thought process of
work, one is position of Victim (the cycle rickshaw puller )
and other one me silent observer. I wanted to bring both
this element in my performance work although basic idea
was already worked.

In this performance my main concern is to bring into
notice various social issues which acts like boundaries for
action for justice. We are constantly consuming this
pressure/tension of this society to fight with emotional
and mental level and we keep on absorbing so called

these negativities in the form of Dark, which accumulates
in our system like carbon and if we don’t burn out and
convert this into energy it will totally take us to depth of
its darkness. My performance will be an attempt to take
out, ejecting all the negativities of our society in the form
of body actions.

Bring me The Smell of Earth and I give you Taste of Love -2016
Jaipur Art Summit , Ravindra Manch , Jaipur India 40 Minutes

Bring me the taste of Earth and I bring you taste of Love

The idea of the proposed Performance was to establish connection to historical aspects of Jaipur. Jaipur is one of the oldest
city and its architecture is old as 300 to 400 years every stone of the city is embedded with history within. The city has lots to
share, from small to big stories of people who lived in this place. Strange and curious stories are embedded in the walls of the
city, the people of city who have seen city growing in ages can share lot of untold stories.
I viewed the pink city through an archeological perspective and I would like to perform as a sort of an archeologist who wants
to collect evidence as much as possible from the historical reminiscence of the city, in this process I become part of it merge
with it, camouflaging self with city. I turned myself in pink through ritualistic and per formative act, becoming one with the city
turning myself in pink in my mind, heart and soul. The essence of city can be found in various sources in its old historical
buildings, be it city streets and lanes, or in its air, in colors of stones and bringing the real essence of pulsating and breathing
city not only Capturing its past but the present, which stands for rich Historical and Cultural heritage. Through various
alchemical processes of collecting grinding filtering and using the earth I will involve myself to become part of it. Finding and
collecting evidences to understand the art and culture of the city. One need to dig deep to understand the city and it is possible
only through close observation of objects, remains like stones and bricks which has embedded history. This performance will
be collaborated with common audience; they will become part this intervention when they lend their contribution by
participating in the performance and share peace of pink earth and share oral history of the place, and in return take back
token of love from artists which is mix of flavors.
This project is kind of personal journey, a process where I become part of space I visit and live in for some time and establish
connection. To understand culture one needs to live not only in monuments, old literature but also connect to local people and
know more through oral histories which surely add varied and unique dimension to known histories. My focus will be making a
collective cultural memory, about individuals and also shared spaces, personal /collective journey of self local communities. It
is a process through which we resurface invisible memories into the visible mode. It is a cultural discourse of understanding
historical city. The performance is to collect the essence of city, reminiscence of rich history of the pink city, and also about
dissolving myself in the color and culture of the city.
“We are what we remember. If we lose our memory, we lose our identity and our identity is the accumulation of our
experiences. When we walk down the memory lane, it can be unconsciously, willingly, selectively, impetuously or sometimes
grudgingly. By following our stream of consciousness we look for lost time and things past. Some reminiscences become
anchor points that can take another scope with the wisdom of hindsight. ("Walking down the memory lane") - Erik Pevernagie

MEET VENKATTAPA
Durational performance of 3 days ( 12 hours 30 minutes)
This is an interactive live performance work, part of VAG forum, It is a simple attempt
to introduce works of K.Venkattappa, artistically using old Bioscope look alike, for
showing his works by making a film strip of his Paintings, Landscapes and other
mythological based work to common people. The idea is to drive the attention of people
towards the issue of Venkattappa Art Gallery and request the Government not to
privatize the only Democratic Space for the Artists of the State and this is public space
which has to remain for public.

It was basically a walk in different parts of the city for 3 days, every day from 11am to
5 pm. I walked in area of like Cubbon park, Venkattappa Art Gallery, MG Road.
During this walks I would interact with common public give information about the
gallery show them the small movie and also giving away leaflet with basic message
about his life, work and contribution of K. Venkattappa in the field of art. This walk
was quite a successful event I could meet different audiences from all age groups and
all categories educated to non educated people and some of people were aware of
this issue and whole heartily supported the cause and those who did not knew about
was given information and they also supported after learning about it. The most
enthusiast audience were children who liked the movie strip in bioscope. Although the
walk bit tiring but fruitful I did this walk for 2 days and Last day I Wanted to do indoors
inside the gallery as Part of Art Marathon.

The performance on third and last day of Art Marathon organized by VAG forum to
show our concern for Public gallery and request government to stop Privatization of
only Democratic and public space . The performance started by mapping the gallery
space with rangoli (white powder) powder and the performance was attempt to claim
the public space by public this was done by constant stamping action of the Floor plan
(Map) of Venkattappa building on hundreds of Xeroxes of constitutional preamble
Stressing on that Venkattappa Gallery is public gallery and public has their right on it,
while also stressing on importance of Voices of people by shouting ‘BY THE
PEOPLE FOR THE PEOPLE AND OF THE PEOPLE’ basically to convey that
VAG is for the people and by people and of the people. While Shouting this I was also
marking the outlining the foot prints of people by white chalk showing their presence
in the gallery presences/voices.

Untold Stories of Comman man, IKIPAF 2016, Kolkata, India

Untold Stories of Common Man
Majerhat Station , KIPAF Kolkata 2016
I have done several visits to Kolkata and there are lots of impressions of city in my mind. The most striking for Music Band players gearing
up for upcoming marriage event they are going to play. The bundle of night lamps to light half ready with red coat and pant and shoes caps
in their one hand and other hand Chai glass . This was inspiration for my performance for IKIPAF performance which was going to be in
Ghats and metro in old city area I performed Untold stories of Common Man. The idea was to see from Common man point of view. From
my earlier trips I always wanted to know the city very closely and it would be a challenge to perform, although undemanding yet
complicated as we are also part of it but again to see through others point of view. City breaths in and out, hustle and bustle of the crowd,
you see faces of most common people like Chaiwala, laborers, small time vendors and many migrants from small town, the working class
and all kinds of people. City is alive because of these common people. The performance that I have conceived brings in the element of
common mans perspective and despite being nucleus of any city they merge in crowd and become common man in the society, you come
across many stories that common man becomes hero but again get lost back in nothingness. I am more curious how it would be to see the
world through the eyes of common man. I want to put my foot in their shoes being nobody yet important for society.

REVERBERATING EARTH

Durational performance on 21 June the

DER LÄNGSTE TAG / THE LONGEST DAY at
Zeughaushof Militärstrasse 49, 8004 Zürich,
Switzerland hosted by Kunstraum Walcheturm ‘

I had thought idea for performance keeping in mind the land of
beauty and Nature (Switzerland). I had seen in pictures, movie
and photographs and had a fascination about this beautiful

land, and my perception was it is like heaven and I wanted to
respond to this idea of perception in my work. Having said that
I don’t want to forget where I came from and cultural aspect of
my country, my feet fully rooted in my culture and my mind
thinking of Switzerland, resonating earth.

In my performance I wanted to metaphorically match with
resonance of earth by an act of making PAPAD (round shaped
snack, I used the act of making the shape as representing earth
in the form of drawing). I did a long durational performance
from morning till evening The PAPAD making is sign of
empowerment and self reliance for women in South Asian

counties such as India, Pakistan Bangladesh etc., and it is one of
the most successful businesses for women coming from poor
economic background. I would metaphorically connect to the
act of rolling and making PAPAD to vibrating and frequency of
earth and ultimately saluting the great land of peace and
harmony.

Karmic Connection III

Performed as part of Magdalena Festival at Leonrod-Haus Munich 2016
In this performance I basically wanted to establish connection with my audience through an act of KARMA

(doing). It was extension of previous performance on reconnecting self and how we establish our connection
through act of action Karma This performance basically highlights the hidden connections. For me it is matter
of personal importance, like whom I meet and how my relation is established with people whom I meet in my
life. This performance was an attempt to build bond through the process of interaction one to one in time and
space, although my audience comes from different origin, roots, environments and spaces and experience, the
performance was to experience a moment of time and space together and through my object as my tool will
help them to look into past, present and future in this moment and to build our bonds and it was to recollect
our memories of past and will remember in future. The audience were asked to make choice what kind of
connection they have with me like spiritual or material through choice of material offered to them to touch.

The performance was enhanced with audio and other material to get the impact and will create a meditative
environment.

Bring me the Smell of Earth and I Bring

you taste of Love‘

Theertha International Performance Festival Colombo
2015

Performed as part First Performance Festival in
Colombo, Srilanka which was initiated by Theertha International
Residency in Colombo. The team Theertha invited me for their
performance art Festival under the curatorial title Border and Lines:
the Temporality of Landscape. This performance was about the
bridging bond between two countries the performance was
intended to share love and compassion without having any barrier
of borders or barrier landscape the earth become one common
ground (space) on which all human has equal right they cannot be
divided on basis of caste creed and ethnicity that was main essence

of performance. There was Sense of sharing through their Love,
Affection and Compassion the main essence of faith and trust. In
the performance I used most eternal element the Clay (earth as
basic element for my intervention. I choose to perform in most
crowded space in Bus Stand of Borella area in Colombo where there
is constant flow of public. This performance would have been
incomplete without the public intervention and they actively
participated in my performance. They shared their part of space
(clay earth to me and in return I shared the taste of Love (toffee

made of jiggery and Neem leaf) this is symbolic act where the love
is not always sweet but the true taste of love is mixed with some
bitterness and they in returned submerged me in the smell of their
Earth (clay) and metaphorically giving me some space in their
landscape and heart.
