Students Create Atoms
By Jodi Edington
GOAL #1: Increase Student Achievement
STRATEGY A.
INCREASE LANGUAGE ARTS AND MATH PROFICIENCY AT EACH GRADE LEVEL
CONSISTENT WITH THE SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT PLANS
A few weeks ago, students in Jodi Edington’s Essential
Science class at Michigan Avenue Academy created three-
dimensional representations of an atom. Edington reports
that “students were able to develop a conceptual under-
standing of the relationship between subatomic particles
and the atomic mass by creating a model of the atom.”
Edington wanted student understanding to move beyond
the equation where the sum of the number of the protons
and neutrons equals the atomic mass. She feels that stu-
dents need an opportunity to build an atom and discover
PP that the composition of the nucleus was the combination
of neutrons and protons.
