2 11 Graduations are momentous occasions, replete with joy and gratitude. We feel joy for the tremendous accomplishments of our students, for the learning they accomplished, for the Torah they have accumulated. We also feel gratitude towards the administration, Rebbeim, moros, and teachers for their dedication and devotion, for inculcating within each student a love of our heritage. As we reflect on our graduates, we are awed by a deep sense of hakaros hatov, gratitude to the Ribono Shel Olom for granting us the opportunity to guide a generation in the way of our forefathers. Ninth grade talmidim conducted a siyum on Meseches Megilah at the Yeshiva High School graduation. At the Yavne graduation, Hendel Berliner Limudei Kodesh and General Studies Valedictorian Shoshana Ribakow and Salutatorian Chani Klahr, addressed the audience; Adina Levitansky was the recipient of the prestigious Beatrice Stone Midos Award. The overwhelming majority of our graduates now proceed to yeshivos and seminaries in Israel. Our graduates are prepared to face the future; may Hashem grant them the ability to go from strength to strength and bring nachas to all. continued on page 12 NACHUM WOLF TO AVIGAYIL ZEFFREN MAZAL TOV TO RABBI AND MRS. 10 The atmosphere at Beatrice J. Stone Yavne High School is charged with Torah, kindness, and camaraderie. The school year revolves around excellence in studies, interschool activities, outreach programs, chesed, and positive interactions between teachers and students. Each student participates in an annual production, some in drama, song or dance, others in props, scenery or costume creation. The activities of a spectacular G.O. this year greatly enhanced the school ruach. Under the umbrella of the Irving I. Stone Student Tzedakah Fund, tzedakah is taught in an enjoyable way; in order to raise funds for distribution in Israel, classes raffle off Purim shalach manos, conduct a mini Chinese Auction, and sell flowers for Shavuos. Each girl is made to feel an integral part of the school’s success. Teachers have imparted joy, enthusiasm, knowledge and responsibility and have helped the girls mature and shine. 3 The Academy family mourns the passing of one of its dearest friends and supporters, Mr. Izsak Keller, z’l. A Holocaust survivor, Mr. Keller held steadfast to his European traditions which remained an important part of who he was. Mr. Keller was a pillar of suport to Congregations Shomre Shabbos and Zichron Chaim; and to the Academy where his children and grandchildren are alumni and his great grandchildren are current students. Located on its own campus, on spacious grounds in a rural setting, the Yeshiva High School is a distinctive bais medrash characterized by a simchas chaim and warm, personal interaction between Rebbeim and talmidim. The Yeshiva curriculum consists of shiurim and learning b’chavrusa, partners as well as Chumash, Navi, Gemarah, and Mishna. Emphasis is placed on yiras Shomayim, mussar, and derech eretz. Credence is given to secular subjects which are taught on a high academic level by an outstanding faculty. This year the talmidim prepared several siyumim, took part in Father/Son Learning programs, chagigos, visited local nursing homes, and welcomed many distinguished speakers and visitors who were impressed with their knowledge and warmth. The Yeshiva High School has truly become a place to shteig, grow, and develop b’simcha. The national Partnership for Excellence in Jewish Education (PEJE) recognized the initiatives of the Hebrew Academy of Cleveland in a newly released publication: Noteworthy Practices in Jewish Day Schools: Serving Diverse Learners in Jewish Day Schools. PEJE researched many different day school programs throughout the country and chose to highlight twenty top programs as some of this nation’s most successful initiatives in Jewish Day School education. The Hebrew Academy was profiled as a school with innovative programs and a sophisticated Pupil Service Team, composed of Judaic and General Studies Interventionists, a Speech Pathologist, Occupational Therapist, Social Workers, LD Tutors, and Enrichment Specialists, that address student concerns in tandem with principals, accessory staff, Resource Room and Enrichment Centers. Under the school’s Project Impact, students in need of special services are evaluated, assessed, and helped in at atmosphere that plays on their strengths and encourages their growth. The Academy’s Pupil Service Team meets the needs of each individual student and promotes their integration into mainstream classrooms. Twenty five trained specialists handle all aspects of a student’s physical and emotional growth, the staff constantly upgrades their skills and attends professional development programs. “We take pride in the Academy’s commitment to chanoch l’naar al pi darcho, recognizing the varied needs of the individual child,” comments Rabbi Simcha Dessler, Educational Director. “When the academic, social, emotional, and behavioral challenges are proactively addressed, all students become equal beneficiaries.” Computer skills are stressed across the curiculum. Grandparents visited to share their experiences. Boys visited nursing homes on a regular basis. PEJE RECOGNIZES THE HEBREW ACADEMY OF CLEVELAND JUNIOR HIGH / YESHIVA HIGH SCHOOL YAVNE HIGH SCHOOL The Hebrew Academy Family deeply mourns the passing of Rabbi Doniel Schur, z’l. Rabbi Schur, Rav of the Heights Jewish Center, was an extraordinary individual and a caring leader who helped infuse our community with an appreciation for Torah and mitzvos. Rabbi Schur was a true friend of the Academy and he often visited our school to conduct bechinos. Rabbi Schur’s children attended the school and his grandchildren and great grandchildren are current Academy students. 4 A major fundraiser, the Hebrew Academy’s Chinese Auction is indebted to Mrs. Batsheva Tashman for spearheading this most successful event. Parents volunteered, students helped, and an authentic looking street in Taiwan was created. This event was a pleasant sociable occasion that brought together Cleveland’s Jewish community. The hallmark of our Yeshiva Ketana is the care and devotion given to each talmid, each boy’s potential is nurtured and encouraged. In addition to conveying a love for Torah and mitzvos, Rebbeim and moros invest energy in individualized approaches to learning, using the latest keriah and motivational methods, encouraging each child to strive for excellence. Project BEAM (Be A Mentch) is a yearlong program promoting friendship, unity, and mutual support. Another impressive project is the creation, each year, of replicas of the keilim that were used in the Mishkan. Students work diligently and study the pesukim in order to create models with correctly corresponding measurements. Younger classes include hands on activities in their learning experiences; students made havdalah candles and besamim, bows and arrows, wrote with quills, and enacted stories from their studies. Visiting Rabbonim tested the talmidim and were visibly impressed. The boys continue to learn, one page at a time, tenderly nourished each according to their level and ability. 9 YESHIVA KETANA DIVISION PTA CHINESE AUCTION Showing Klaf Mishkan project Project BEAM Painting Murals for Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital Purim play Painting shtender DISTINGUISHED VISITORS lhrun ,t ,utur lhbhg uhvu Rabbi Matisyohu Solomon, Mashgiach, Beth Medrash Govoha visits the Academy’s Sapirstein campus. The front entrance to the Academy’s South Taylor Road campus is bright and inviting. Mezuzahs have been affixed, our portraits of the school’s founders displayed, and the new vestibule will prove a fitting portico for our dynamic institution. Our appreciation to the Jewish Community Federation, Mr. Ivan A. Soclof, Dr. Louis Malcmacher, and our Board of Directors for their support of this project. RENOVATION UPDATE Music filled the air as singer Michoel Pruzansky and illusionist Moshe Garfinkel entertained a crowd of friends and supporters for our Annual Academy Concert. 8 5 Fifth grader Mendel Hershkowitz won national recognition for his acrylic painting that showed a cluster of trees of different shapes and colors; his poster won over more than 74,000 fifth grade classrooms across the country who participated in the contest. Representatives of the National Arbor Day Foundation and Toyota Motor North America traveled to the Hebrew Academy to unveil Mendel’s poster. The Vice Mayor of Cleveland Heights attended and praised both Mendel’s talent and the Hebrew Academy’s presence, which he said has added greatly to the city. Mendel and his family flew to Washington for a national presentation of his award. His poster was displayed at a special art exhibit in the U.S. Botanical Garden. 6 7 A challenge facing Rebbeim today is how to motivate students to view Gedolim not as distant entities but as real individuals who can be emulated and copied. For this reason, the Yeshiva Ketana division of the Academy has instituted a unique Gedolim Fair. Each talmid in the sixth grade extensively studied and researched the life of a Gadol and wrote a report, supplying biographical data, a summary of the seforim that were published, and a short anecdote about their Gadol that they felt was relevant to their classmates. The entire Yeshiva Ketana viewed the data and photos collected and listened while each sixth grader spoke about his Gadol. The students were honored with a special message from our dean, Rabbi N.W. Dessler who had the privilege of personally meeting many of the Gedolim on display. Rav Dessler shared first hand stories, bringing to life many wonderful stories about the Gedolim. Rav Dessler extolled the talmidim to follow the midos tovos and hasmadah of the Gedolim. “The main thing,” Rav Dessler said, “is that we have the opportunity every day and minute to follow in their paths.” All divisions focus on our ties to Israel. Giant murals of the Kotel in the auditorium and in preschool rooms remind the children that our prayers are heard when we daven from Yerushalayim. The wall outside the Girls Elementary office was transformed into a unique landmark. One brown box represented one stone of the Kotel, and each girl inscribed in her stone a wish she would send if she were able to approach the Kotel. The longing to touch the real wall in Israel was almost palpable as students passed by our mini Wall each day. Excitement mounted when each child was given a passport for a virtual trip to Israel. During the last week of school, the “trip” took place in the auditorium where a huge Israel Fair was held. Each class arranged an interactive display, a video showed the beauty of the land, and there was even a live hook-up to the Kotel. Though many miles away, Israel will always be an integral part of our curriculum. ERETZ YISRAEL FAIR GEDOLIM FAIR FAIRS Aleph bais and berachos, parsha papers and projects, moros and students in this division are always on the go. Creativity and individual expression are encouraged as the children color, cut, paste, and play.
