OCTOBER 11 Many years ago I attended the engagement celebration of a young baal teshuvah who
distinguished himself as a gifted Torah scholar. His father, a prominent physician who
Meet the Teachers for Girls clearly did not lead an observant Jewish life, took pride in his son's spiritual journey
Grades 1-6 at 8:00 p.m. and accomplishments. In addressing the audience, the father made the
following statement that has remained etched in my mind for decades. He stated:
•••••• "There comes a time in life when one becomes known through the accomplishments
of his children. I am proud to be known as my son's father. This is a feeling that I wish
OCTOBER 13 upon each of you."
PSAT Yavne 11th Grade Interestingly, this statement seemingly finds its origin in a commentary on this week's
Meet the Teachers parsha.
Early Childhood
At 8:00 p.m. In Parshas Noach the Torah tells us that the name of Nachor's wife is Milkah, the
daughter of Haran, the father of Milkah (11,29). Naturally, the Torah's repetition of
•••••• Milkah's name–first as a wife and then as a daughter–begs for explanation.
6:37 In her youth Milkah was regarded as bas Haran, the daughter of Haran. As she
developed her own enviable reputation her acclaim transformed Haran into avi
Milkah, the father of Milkah. Indeed, the Midrash teaches that all the prophets of the
nations of the world descended from Milkah (Yalkut Shimoni, Balak)
and, ultimately, Haran became widely known as her father.
This explanation comes from the Haflaah who explains, in his commentary, that a child
is generally regarded and known by virtue of his parents. As he matures, however,
he adds his personal contributions to the world and thereby earns his own
reputation. His parents then become recognized through his accomplishments–and,
indeed, this is an incredible blessing.
As parents, we kvell with nachas in the milestones, accomplishments and lifecycle
events of our children. We invest heavily in our children, fully dedicating our efforts
and energy to enable them to reach their fullest potential in life. It is our fervent
desire to raise the type of children who will not merely live up to our high standards
and expectations, but who will one day earn their own enviable reputations which will
define us, their parents, as it defines them.

Yeshiva Ketana
The Yeshiva Ketana was pleased to hold two upsherens this week:
Eliyahu Berman in the class of his father, Rabbi Sholom Berman and
Binyomin Rosenfeld in Rabbi Matitia’s class. Wishing continued nachas to
both families!
Excitement is mounting
as the construction
crews are working
tirelessly to have the
magnificent, new
boys building ready
for our students. As outlined in an earlier email to parents, the
moving date is on Monday, October 11 and there will be no school
for boys on this day to allow our staff to set up their classrooms.
Boys will arrive to their new building on Tuesday, October 12th.
The bussing districts have been notified and bussing will be available for all eligible students on this day.
We are all extremely excited about the move and we share in your anticipation for our students to be settled in their
new “home”. Watch for details for the Chanukas Habayis celebration!
Junior High School
Our seventh graders, ready to begin in-depth learning of the laws
of tefillin, were treated to a special lesson on tefilin and mezuzos
by author and lecturer, Rabbi Chaim Kass who was visiting
Cleveland. Rabbi Kass is an expert in the field and we appreciated
his visit!
We celebrated a double mazel tov in our Junior High yesterday
with the birth of a son to Rabbi and Mrs. Chanina Dessler and a
daughter to Rabbi and Mrs. Tzvi Maimon. The eighth grades
enjoyed a kumsitz and the entire division was treated to donuts!

Yavne High School
Hodu L”Hashem, Yavne had a wonderful start of the year and we are
gratified to be back after the Succos break. A special welcome to our
new students – Tzippy Levy, Rivky Spector, Tzofia Francis, Michele
Linetsky, Rivka Kysil, and Dena Goldberg. We are fortunate to have join
our team -as Limudei Kodesh staff: Miss Sara Katz, Mrs. Penina Pransky,
Mrs. Bracha Spector, Mrs. Miriam Berman, Mrs. Devorah Goldstein, and
Miss Mirel Matitia and in General Studies: Mrs. Shifra Hanson, Mrs. Shira
Goldsmith, Mrs. Heather Amyakar, Mr. Andrew Ditmar, and Mrs. Sharon
Goelman.
Our girls were revved up and full of anticipation at the Yavne Jr. High and High school G.O. orientation and welcomed our
students at orientation with a decorated lobby, a welcome song and accompanying video, and a “suitcase” of treats/jumbo
freeze pops. Our G.O. heads this month (Junior High - see picture above) Tziporah Korn, Nechama Marcovich, Sarah Matitia,
Rochela Strulowitz, and Atara Weinerman, under the direction of Miss Sara Katz, enthused the crowd as they performed the
new song with motions. After two encores, the entire junior high was joining and dancing along. The girls were given fanny
packs with the G.O. logo and they look forward to using it when they’re
on the “go”. Doughnuts and soda were enjoyed by all.
ובחרת בחייםwas the theme for Yavne Junior High Yom Iyun, and a
beautiful program was prepared by Miss Sara Katz to explore this topic
and internalize its lessons. First, the girls were divided into groups. Then,
Mrs. Miriam Berman mesmerized the girls with a true, powerful story,
followed by each group discussing and sharing the many takeaways and
lessons they gained from the story. We showed “Make the Call”, a video
about asking others for forgiveness by Rabbi Yoel Gold. Each girl then
crafted an elegant floral succah decoration. As a grand finale, the girls
enjoyed a brownies and ice cream dessert. What a meaningful and
delightful experience for all!
We are excited to inaugurate a brand new shmitta program under the
direction of Mrs. Shani Kohn, with the goals of implementing the lessons of shmitta in our daily lives. In addition, we look
forward to partnering with Keren Hashviis, to support Jewish farmers and their families in Eretz Yisroel in keeping this
treasured mitzvah. We are proud of our talented student heads, Meira Bressler, Devorah Naomi Maimon, Sarale Rivkin, and
Dafna Stern who performed an original song, distributed bandana mementos, prepared videos, and shared heartfelt words
which really inspired us at the breakout. A special thank you to Mrs. Shoshana Chen for the
magnificent shmitta themed display in the Yavne lobby.
We are awed and grateful of our partnership with our dedicated parent body. This was clearly
evident at the fantastic turnout for the Junior High and High School Meet the Teachers
evenings. Meet the Teachers evening. The warmth and positive energy at the informative
orientation was a very meaningful start for a successful school experience. We are also
especially appreciative of the generous response and numerous sponsorships that we received
from parents to further enhance our avodas hakodesh.
The 9th Grade STEM classes have been learning how to use the Engineering Design Process. So
far this year, they “Helped Harry” see the board better, invented a moving wind-up toy,
designed a new hot beverage mug and redesigned a shopping cart.

Girls Elementary
All of our girls have been eagerly awaiting the Middos Program Assembly on Fri-
day. The theme is not a secret, every girl was able to uncover it on the scratch-off
poster she got in the summer. We are going to focus on the middah of Emes this
year. At the assembly, our new theme song will be presented, with the 6th grade
girls performing the motions. As you see in the picture, the girls have been hard
at work practicing to present to the school. We will also present the middah of
Emes in a fun and engaging way, focusing on “Keep the fluffball small….make
sure not to lie at all!”
Kindergarten
What a great first full week of school we had! In Kindergarten, we had two exciting
assemblies this week to kick off a few of our special Kindergarten programs.
At our recess assembly we learned how we stay safe on the playground and in the
Gym. We talked about our important recess rules.
We also had a Social Skills assembly were we met “Flexy the Monkey”! Flexy helps
us remember to be flexible when things don’t go our way.
Look out for the Flexy mitzvah notes coming home!

Early Childhood
We enjoyed welcoming back the kinderlach after our Succos vacation.
They all jumped right back into their classes and routines with big smiles
and lots of enthusiasm!
After the children heard the story about Noach and the taiva, taivos of all
sorts were built in each class using blocks, Lego, animals, mentchies, etc.
The children worked hard on painting, coloring and gluing together their
own taivos, which they can use to tell
the story and point out what Noach
put on each floor of the taiva. Some of
our classes practiced painting on an easel. The children had so much fun experimenting
with the array of paint colors that were prepared for them, and many of our talented
kinderlach produced magnificent and beautiful rainbows. The children learned about pairs
and played matching games, and they learned to count till “7” and played counting and
sorting games. Some classes learned about “patterns.” The children colored pictures
copying the pattern of the rainbow colors. Some classes had their children strengthen
their fine motor skills by stringing fruit loops following the pattern of the rainbow colors.
For Science, a few of our classes filled basins with water and let the children experience
with what items will float and which ones will sink.
On Rosh Chodesh Cheshvan, the children got treats as they sang and danced “A Gutten Chodesh”!
HAC/Federation Super Sunday
In a recent email to parents, Rabbi Dessler expressed a debt of hakaras hatov, gratitude, to our local Federation. When the
Academy became a beneficiary of the Jewish Federation of Cleveland in 1948, Cleveland’s Federation was the first Federa-
tion in the nation to support a Jewish day school. Since then, the Federation has been and continues to be a consistent pillar
of support to the Academy.
In the past year alone Federation has:
* allocated approximately $1.3 million to the Academy’s operating budget.
* allocated $1.5 million towards the Academy’s Vision 2020 capital campaign.
* funded the Academy’s modular classrooms at a cost of approximately $300,000. This was necessitated by the
emergence of Covid at a time of exponential growth for the school.
This Sunday is Federation’s annual Super Sunday and the Academy’s Yavne High School will be a host site for parent vol-
unteers to come together to make solicitation calls on behalf of Federation’s Campaign For Jewish Needs.
Please register and join other Academy parents this coming Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 at Yavne High School, 2475
South Green Road. Refreshments will be served and Federation staff will be present.
Walk-ins are welcome. Questions? Please contact Mrs. Chavi Cohen, HAC parent who graciously volunteered to facilitate
this opportunity. She can be reached at [email protected].
